Pearl Harbor Day. We still have a neighbor of ours, Will Lehner, who was aboard the USS Ward on that fateful morning. He watched the ship sink a midget Jap sub that was trying to sneak into Pearl.
He's doing fine, and still meets with a few of his shipmates once a month for coffee and stories in Minneapolis.
Good Morning NY. I remember Pearl Harbor. Living in Alaska the news came through and said Dutch Harbor. Don’t you know our tiny town of Craig was in an unroar for awhile. Our government did evacuate the Aleuts from the Aleution Islands to Ketchikan. I can imagine they were pretty miserable. I remember riding by their “encampment”, but I never saw anyone. That’s what I remember, as a child, of Pearl Harbor.
I was stationed in the Aleutian Islands back in the seventies. (Shemya AFB)
I flew over to Attu in a C-130 with our chaplain while at Shemya. The commander met our plane and took us out in a snowcat and gave us a tour of the island, and the battles that were fought there against the Japanese. Pretty heady stuff for a simple Sergeant at that time.
We then found our way to the mess hall for a top notch dinner before flying back.
Don’t ‘cha know that your rain got sent here and we have been dripping wet since late Monday night. We also had some snow here this morning. Didn’t stay, but the flakes were nice and plump.
Having lived in CA for about a million years, and never having to see snow unless we wanted to drive up to the mountains and/or go skiing, snow is not my favorite thing.
Hope the rain sets in for you all shortly.
We lost a lot of men at Shemya..but we learned a lot. The sea around those islands are just awful, and of course our government didn’t quite know how treacherouse the water was, let along the hiding enemy.
Yes, those forlorn outposts always fed the troops well, didn’t they?

jtill, you can send the rain back, if you like. We’d sure appreciate it. We need a lot more that what we got.
The most amazing thing I remember seeing out at Shemya was seeing the currents of the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean meeting. The waves would actually hit each other where they met.
And yes... the food was always the best!!!
I’d love to send that rain back, but I don’t think I can find a long enough rope to lasso those clouds and pull them back to you.
I’ll try a few prayers and see if they help.
Speaking of the Aleutian Islands......I lived on Adak for two years back in the mid fifties. Dad was a Navy Chaplain.
We participated in practice air raid procedures often.
I remember the raging sea...gentle inland streams....salmon....trout.....King crab.....earthquakes.....beautiful buttercups in the spring.....Bald Eagles....beautiful things.
As a child I was sheltered from the scary stuff. Mom and Dad were very good at making us feel safe, secure and happy.
Gentle streams full of trout. I remember when we’d go camping. We’d rise early, catch a few trout, clean them, then take them to Mom who had the bisquits in the pot, the frying pan hot, the cornmeal ready for the trout, the coffee pot on the fire. We’d wade and fish, skip flat rocks, climb trees. What a childhood we were lucky to experience. We were tough little rascals.
We ate like kings those days.
After eating Kingcrab like that then going to the market today and pay $16.00 a pound for 1 shank of a leg, shell weighed, not just the meat.
It sure is.
