I think the women "roamed" because they were kidnapped in battle, or were married off to bring peace or unity between groups. Remember, women were often considered chattel.

I think that your, I believe correct, hypothesis is too politically incorrect for the current crop of academics and journalists. Such oppression of women only began when George W. Bush became President. ;-)
