A man walks into a bar, catches a girl's eye, and immediately looks gloomy, moody and averts his eyes. The woman is overcome with sexual attraction. Not your usual love story but maybe a more realistic one. Turns out, a winning smile isn't the way to a woman's heart; men who swagger and look gloomy are more likely to set pulses raising.
That's according to Jessica Tracy at the University of British Columbia, Canada, who asked more than 1000 adults to rate the sexual attractiveness of hundreds of photos of the opposite sex.
The images showed men and women in various displays of happiness, with big smiles and puffed out chests or shameful glances, lowered heads and averted eyes.
In an interview with UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph, co-author Alec Beall, also at British Columbia said: "We did not ask participants if they thought these targets would make a good boyfriend or wife - we wanted their gut reactions on carnal, sexual attraction."
The study found that women were not attracted to smiling, happy men, preferring those who looked proud and powerful or moody and ashamed.

Hell no because then they wouldn't be "bad" any more....;D
Come on now Sal...admit it.....it's all about the challenge to change him isn't it.... ;-)
I can see that. I also am aware of that it also depends on whether or not a woman is in a phase of looking for a life partner or a quick lay.
A woman, for example, is thought to value humour because it represents a guys willingness to put thought into what he is saying, which represents his willingness to commit to her.
Good golly - looking at moo-shells neck I think I found my kids missing bike chain.
Aw, man, I thought I had found my tub stopper;)
*If* he ‘changed’ I’d ditch ‘im and go find a ~new~ Bad Boy....LOL
That expalins a lot for me,, but doesnt really offer a solution.
“I’ve always wondered why so many women that have been with an alcoholic drunk that bats them around every now and then, will finally leave him after years of abuse and find another man with the same problem to hitch up with??? I think that those women have a low esteem of themselves problem and there is always the ones that think they can change the person. Poor things are about as sick as the men they keep. “
It’s been my experience that women do an incredibly good job of finding their “father” in a man. Especially if they have a dysfunctional one. An alcoholic is a classic example.
It is true but the kind of woman it attracts is nuerotic.
Bi-Polar men rejoice.
Then crash and become angry and sulk.
Then rejoice.
Then crash and become angry and sulk
Then ...
But, let’s face it - it’s when the guy pulls out his wallet that the radar goes into overdrive, and the guy with the fattest wallet wins.
Ummm—more attractive to whom? Maladjusted men are a passel of trouble. Just sayin’.
I’ve always avoided the bad boys and gotten dogs—post a pic of Odin with his toothiest expression and then conjecture about my personal safety for lo these many years.
A man walks into a bar, catches a girl’s bra size, age, bank balance, and occupation and immediately looks gloomy, moody, averts his eyes and pops a seroquil. He’s seen a surveyor for a sexual attraction study. Other women in the room are deeply sympathetic and offer to bear his children. Sadly, they’re all lounge lizards.
If you want to pick up women, you go grocery shopping. The old drop-the-mayo-on-her-foot routine works every time, and you get to pick and choose. That’s why they call it shopping. Duh.
OK, I have proof that I am right and that this author is all wet.
A glossy magazine here published an article on the “20 hottest singles in Milwaukee” and all their likes and dislikes and criteria for a good date. All ten of the women demanded a “sense of humor” in their dates. It sounded like they were not looking for the dark, mysterious, brooding type. A sense of humor was at the top of what they are looking for. On the other hand, only 3 of the men wanted their female date to have a sense of humor.
They were interviewed, and that is what was said, and I believe it! LOL.
Not to me. I prefer men who are positive and confident.
I thought I’d impart some of my wisdom to the discussion, but it looks like nobody wants it! LOL
But if the women are all falling for the brooding, sullen, gloomy guys, no wonder the marriages aren’t happening, or aren’t lasting.
Me too! I married one. :)
All I ever picked up in a bar was a hangover...
see post 58...
The only “toothy images” of Odin that exist are in the memories of whomever was in front of him while he was between them and me.
I don’t have one ‘toothy’ photos of him at all.
[and nobody on his ‘business end’ has ever took the time to whip out a camera]....;D
