Time For A Checkup
April 3, 2011
Every year I have a physicalthat periodic visit to the doctors office where Im poked and prodded, screened and studied. It is something that can be easy to dread, and even to fear. We arent sure what the tests will show or what the doctors will say. Still, we know that we need this evaluation to understand our physical well-being and what is needed as we move forward.
The same is true spiritually in the life of the Christ-follower. We need to pause from time to time and reflect on the condition of our hearts and lives.
One place for an important self-study is at the Lords Table. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, some of whom were eating in an unworthy manner: Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup (1 Cor. 11:28). In the remembrance of Christs death for us, there can be a sobering clarity of thought and understanding, for as we consider the price Jesus paid for us, it is the best time to consider the condition of our heart and our relationships. Then, with honest understanding of our spiritual well-being, we can turn to Him for the grace we need to move forward in His name.
Is it time for your checkup?
Search me, O God, my heart discern;
Try me, my inmost thoughts to learn.
Help me to keep from sin, I pray,
Guarding my mind throughout this day. Anon.
Self-examination is one test from which no Christian is excused.
Read: 1 Corinthians 11:27-29
Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
1 Corinthians 11:28

That is a georgeous picture of Notre Dame, Meg. It’s a meaningful verse from D. DeHann, also!
The blossoms are popping out all over the high desert, and are so beautiful!

Thank you for the beautiful flowering trees beside the long white fence.
And thank you for your kind words. This lady who passed away was 88 years old but you would never know it. We went to the same church and she was in the Red Hats. She loved the Red Hats more than anyone. Her mind was terrific, she drove her car every day and loved everyone and especially her Heavenly Father.
About 10 months ago the doctor diagnosed lung cancer and it couldn’t be treated. He advised that she may have 6 months to live. I always told her “doctors don’t know everything and God could do anything.” She was a good Christian and believed God could do anything. I want you to know that she never suffered. Several of us ladies took her to lunch a few times and she said had the doctor not told her she had cancer, she would not know it. What a blessing. That type of cancer can be cruel!
She just got sick during the last few days and was on a breathing tube for 24 hours and they took it off because she was doing better. A few hours later, she took her last breath and died peacefully, just as she had lived. I went to visitation last night and another friend told me that was what had happened. We are all so grateful that she had a peaceful death. We know she is with Jesus now for sure!
This is not supposed to be a sad story but a sweet good story. We who are left do shed tears because we will miss her presence with us but we know she is in a better place.
