I'm curious what people though in general of the Superbowl ads. Do you have a favorite. Did you like them?
the Clydesdales were in the Sergio Leone style ad
The races would never be reversed in an add. That would be politically incorrect. It’s OK to throw a pop can at a White person; it’s not OK for a White to throw one at a Black. But for some reason, Pepsi carried the pop throwing shtick even further in a subsequent add. Someone there has a weird sense of humor.
I liked the NFL “best fans” ad. Good montage.
The consensus with our gang:
1) VW/Darth Vader. By a long shot.
2) Doritos/Grandpa. A little too much fluff at the start, last few seconds made it memorable.
3) NFL Fans ad. All the retro characters in current NFL garb was a nice touch.
Beyond that, nothing really stood out. And I, personally, thought the game was pretty sloppy except for maybe the last 10 minutes of the 4th quarter. Then again, a lot of that had to do with the slipping and sliding on the turf of “Jonestown Stadium”.
Har!! Too funny.
IMO, the halftime show revealed the BEPs as talentless hacks.
I agree with you about the ads... on the whole, they were AWFUL! If I was a Pepsi stockholder on Friday, I wouldn't be today!
The halftime show was indeed horrible. But, "WORST EVER" is a pretty tough category to win. Thankfully, most people have forgotten just how ROTTEN many of them were...
Here's a synopsis of my nominee:
The game: Super Bowl XVI (1982)
The transgressions: I hope you were throwing the football in your front yard during halftime shows in the 1970s and early 1980s, which all seemed to feature either Up With People or Carol Channing. Up With People always had a creepy-weird cultish quality, with exaggerated dance moves, brightly colored yet chaste clothing and industrial-grade happiness. The group's 1982 "Salute to Motown and the 1960s" was the worst of its four Super Bowl appearances. The performance featured the whitest people in the world performing music most closely identified with African American culture. Imagine watching the cast of Bonanza performing in a Tyler Perry play.
Final score: San Francisco 49ers 26, Cincinnati Bengals 21
Interestingly enough... ANOTHER year in which the GAME was actually VERY interesting! :-)
The mini-cooper ad aimed at the queer market was disgusting but I’m sure that they know their buying demographic.
Wow. I sure have.
I think us white folks ought to go burn down a Starbucks.
1) VW/Darth Vader. By a long shot. That was the consensus at my house last night, and again here at work today. It was really cute, and was a HOME RUN with the "moms".... well, pretty much with the Dad's too.
Actually, the other VW ad was pretty well done too... the Speedy Beetle! I got it...
I HATED ALL the Dorito ads... The pug one was the LEAST offensive, but... was still pretty lame.
I was also VERY disappointed in the e-trade ads. I mean, they were OK....but, after their last one, with the baby in "time out" for "riding the dog like a horse"... I was expecting a LOT better.
As others have mentioned, I liked the monkeys in the parking lot... and, the Ozzie ad was funny, but not effective. What the heck was Best Buy selling there? I have no idea.
I was SHOCKED at how many ads WE helped pay for... GM and Chrysler.... and, boy... were there a LOT of FOX ads, or what? I have to wonder whether they REALLY sold as many as they wanted to???
The beaver commercial and the Darth Vader commercial were the best this year.
I was disappointed that there was no Clydesdale commercial this year.
That would mean having to go near a Starbucks. I'll pass...
Ads even worse than last year’s ads, which then looked to be designed for single males aged around 16-19. This year the ads were simply uniformly sophomoric, I guess aimed at generic idiots of all ages, genders, and ethnicities.
A few were slightly clever, but most were disgusting, revolting, boring, and/or stupid.
I will say that I got a kick out of GM wasting beaucoup redistributed bucks on the Volt, a car that sells about 400 units a month right now. I assume that was simply pandering to the Obammunists, and that it was designed for an audience of One.
The vast majority of the ads sucked. But that being said I really, really like the NFL commercial where they had all the classic sitcom families dressed in fan gear.

I also really enjoyed the Captain America preview, it was awesome and patriotic.
Yeah, but the new Charger looks pretty cool...
Lame commercials this year. But Darth Vader kid and House were great!
There was a Clydesdale commercial early in the program. It was a western.
