These are pretty amazing considering they were taken up to 145 years ago: A compendium of photos from the Civil War era. Truly fortunate that so many of these have survived.

I'm not sure about that. There was a symbiosis between Sherman and Grant that made each man a better warrior. It's a fascinating dynamic and one that is explored thoroughly in Charles B. Flood's Grant and Sherman: The Friendship That Won the Civil War

Gettysburg was an important battle, but ultimately irrelevant.
Grant won the war at Vicksburg when he cut the Confederacy in two. The Rebs just didn't know it yet.

That’s an interesting photo. Do you know what year it was taken?
The pic was taken during his period of service with the US Army, prior to the outbreak of hostilities.
Looks like it was taken in the early 1960s to me.
