Doesn't even really look like a human.
Looks kinda like what an alien might view as a human.

Did they do a lot of “on location” filming back in the ‘20s?

I liked the idea posted by one person that it might be a hearing aid. She might also have just been trying to warm her cold ear.

And the roaming charges must be astronomical.
I figured it out from these song lyrics;
Yeah, man you see guys
walking down the street
pushing shopping carts
and you think they’re talking to allah,
they’re talking to themself.
Man, no they’re talking to ELVIS!
ELVIS! ELVIS!

They did plenty at movie premieres. If somebody wanted to blend in it would the last place they would want to go back then.

I always thought the Talosians, with their advanced brains, could have figured out a slightly better plan for this lady too. Yeah, I know, she was a "lump of flesh," but geez ...

It's a portable music box invented by Zebidahah Jobs. For only 99¢ you could buy a new cylinder with an entirely new song on it. He called it the iPlink and sold three dozen of them before the music industry had him beaten in a railyard.

Guess they didn’t have Bluetooth where she’s from.

Oh yeah? And who would she have been talking to without network coverage? This story is not only BS, its not even remotely plausible BS... Hey...In sci-fi, anything is plausible. If there was an orbiting starship, she would have had coverage...
OK?

“What good would a cell phone do her before cell towers?”
Perhaps she is talking to cell towers that WILL be built nearby.
If you could transport matter through time, energy would certainly be a no brainer.
