LONDON (Reuters Life!) – Starch grains found on 30,000-year-old grinding stones suggest that prehistoric man may have dined on an early form of flat bread, contrary to his popular image as primarily a meat-eater.

The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal on Monday, indicate that Palaeolithic Europeans ground down plant roots similar to potatoes to make flour, which was later whisked into dough.

"It's like a flat bread, like a pancake with just water and flour," said Laura Longo, a researcher on the team from the Italian Institute of Prehistory and Early History.

I remember one time we were hungry and we (kids) decided to make tuna helper without the tuna. It wasn’t so good and definitely not enough for 5 of us. lol. Thank goodness Dad brought home groceries.

I imagine cheese making was more important back then as it was unlikely lactose tolerance had yet evolved in those North European and African cattle herding societies where it exists today.

Did they have Lactaid coupons back then? My fridge and freezer is filled with them. $2.00 off any size and since the quart size sells for $2.19 which means I got them for 19 cents each.

They sure could have used them! But I don't think the concept of the coupon or uniform currency had been invented yet. ;)

I find it amusing that American dairy farmer lobbyists make sure that, whenever there is a disaster anywhere in the world, when America sends food, they send milk.

Most the world cannot drink the stuff at all without getting sick, and in a disaster they are ill disposed to make cheese or something useful out of it.

I think we have been getting buzzed for at least 100,000 years.

That explains the hangover.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

“I use to make a flour and water “flatbread” when I was desperate, usually ate it with ketchup.”

Good for you. Whatever works.

I’m planning to make some Cattail bread this winter. Just an exercise.

“Why grind roots?? maybe scrape them clean...make root pancakes...like potato pancakes.”

Some roots you have to boil twice or they ain’t good for you.

Typically, beer making is thought to preceed bread, and may have been why people settled to grow grains. (would have been enough reason for me to invent agriculture)

Expect to catch a lot of good-natured flack for your comment. ;)

Signed, Beer Lovers on FR. (not that we've studied it to the extent we've made beer from the recipe found in the pyramid, not all of us, anyway)

Thank you!

I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey’s too rough, champagne costs too much, and vodka puts my mouth in gear
Aw, this little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i love beer
(yes, he likes beer)

I agree with Tom T Hall

suggest that prehistoric man may have dined on an early form of flat bread

Until prehistoric woman showed him how to make real bread, leading to a bun in the oven.
