London, Sep 22: Power grids may crash, communication systems may collapse and Internet may shut down in 2013 as scientists warned that a huge solar flare is due to burst in 2013.
British Defence Secretary, Liam Fox informed that the giant explosion of energy from the Sun, a phenomenon which occurs only once every 100 years, may cause incalculable damages to the earth.
'The Sun' reported that the hostile power could cause a similar effect by exploding a nuclear weapon in space.
Fox claimed, "While we all benefit from scientific advances, so we also create vulnerabilities that can be exploited by our enemies."
"However advanced we become, the chain of our security is only as strong as its weakest link," added his statement.

I’ll hide in my basement. The boogy man can’t get me there.
So you know, the boogy man lives in your basement. You are so hosed.

"Just due to my fear of EMPs, I hope we do get a taste of exactly what can happen - not enough to kill 90% of Americans (as strategically placed EMPs will - mostly through starvation), but enough to disrupt us, so we take EMPs seriously." Where does this obsession with doom and gloom come from? Nuclear weapons were detonated in space back in the fifties if I am not mistaken. The world did not come to an end. The telephones still worked and the power grid stayed on line.

It depends where in space. If outside the ionosphere, no issue. If below (i.e., low Earth orbit), then trouble. We had some serious zapping during the Pacific tests (with much harder systems than today) - or we wouldn’t even know EMPs existed. As to the sun doing the zapping - I agree, little data there.

Not necessarily a big deal:
"But it turns out there are fairly simple measures which are well understood now which can be taken. There are the equivalents of huge surge protectors which need to be put on these different transformers."

No it wasn’t. Your point was that you thought all of this was a hoax. EMPs are not - the sun, who knows.
As to living in fear. I’ve told my kids to throw in the towel and check out if we get a serious EMP hit - I don’t live in fear of it or even try to prepare for it - I just acknowledge that some of this is real.

Well our clown congress surely doesn’t take EMP seriously. They should, but they won’t.

Could not agree more. In the 1930s (through late 1941), the DEMOCRATS were screaming about the SKY WAS FALLING and that Japan and Germany were going to “BRING THE WORLD TO WAR”.
What a bunch of idiots...except they were RIGHT that time (maybe their last time).

I'm filling my basement with crates of toilet paper. About a month after the last truck makes a delivery, TP will be worth its weight in gold.

Who can predict a solar flare three years in advance? All they can predict is that the solar cycle should be nearing its maximum at that time.
Maybe there is a big solar flare, maybe not. Even if there is, it may not hit the Earth, since it would have to be in the part of the sun directly facing the Earth.
