"Just due to my fear of EMPs, I hope we do get a taste of exactly what can happen - not enough to kill 90% of Americans (as strategically placed EMPs will - mostly through starvation), but enough to disrupt us, so we take EMPs seriously."

Where does this obsession with doom and gloom come from? Nuclear weapons were detonated in space back in the fifties if I am not mistaken. The world did not come to an end. The telephones still worked and the power grid stayed on line.

It depends where in space. If outside the ionosphere, no issue. If below (i.e., low Earth orbit), then trouble. We had some serious zapping during the Pacific tests (with much harder systems than today) - or we wouldn’t even know EMPs existed. As to the sun doing the zapping - I agree, little data there.
