...near Letchworth. Archaeologists have found a circular area about 50 metres wide surrounded by a bank at Stapleton's Field in Norton. North Herts Archaeology Officer, Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews said: "Henges are quite rare with only 60 known in the UK, so this is a significant find. It's interesting as the only other henge known locally is on Western Hills, which is visible from the site we are working on." ...The archaeologists are able to date the henge because of pottery they found which is associated with the Bronze Age... Henges are only known to occur in Britain and Northern Ireland. They are commonly found in 'groups', each separated by hundreds of miles. There are various theories as to the purpose of a henge. Some experts believe henges were used as a defence, while others think they were meeting places for rituals. There is an open invitation on Saturday 28 August 2010 at 2pm for members of the public to visit the site and view items on display. Stapleton's Field lies between Church Lane, in the centre of Norton and the A1(M) motorway.

Bronze Hedge Cutter
So now everybody’s got their own Henge. Figgers. Its the hip thing to have.
I don’t know why archaeologists always want to insist that every freaking building they ever find is some kind of “temple”. Geez... Give it a rest already.
I would bet that stonehenge was first and foremost a tavern. This is right about the time that man learned to brew beer. They would have needed a place to gather and enjoy their wonderful product together. I can think of few things that would make me want to drag big rocks for miles and miles.
It was a tavern.
SO that's how those rocks got there..."Holde ye mine beere and watche this!"
zactly :-)
Pretty cool, where is it on Earth?
The only reasons fire was discovered and remained important was to cook food and to make homebrew. ;’)
“Henges are only known to occur in Britain and Northern Ireland.”
I don’t think that’s correct. There are remains of henge in the Netherlands.
I think the circular layout is (nearly) unique to the British Isles; there are “Medicine Wheels” in North America, but the stones used are not enormous. The unexplained megalithic construction can be found all over the world, however, including the lines of stones at Carnac in Brittany.
