In my opinion, your continued complaints about people wanting to go faster than 76 is why so many here didn’t really accept that your only issue was taking time to safely move over. Because you certainly sound like you dislike HAVING to move out of the way of someone when you are going 76.

I still say I don’t understand the concept of not being able to move out of the left lane. I’ve never found myself trapped in a lane for more than a few seconds. Have you often missed your exits because you can’t move out of the left lane?

I love roundabouts. Interestingly, when I visited England, I got a few days where I rented a car and drove across the country, and I found that very few English drivers knew how to correctly navigate the roundabouts.

It was funny merging in easily while all these native drivers were slamming on their brakes and causing trouble.

Anybody who drives the speed limit in the left lane of an American highway, unless everybody in front of them is doing the same, is a menace, and causing unnecessary risk to themselves and others.

And a police officer would tell you the same thing. You go the speed of the traffic. Heck, even Genoa drives 6 miles over the limit; most people who “obey the law” do so by driving 9 miles or less over the limit.

Simply put — if you drive too slow in the left lane, you will make people upset, and upset drivers are dangerous to you and others. Better to move over, let them pass, and stop worrying about whether other people are “getting away” with something.

My post was more about how it is supposed to work in theory. I realize it's not how it actually works in practice, CWCT. In my post I didn't say to sit in the passing lane doing just the speed limit. If you're doing 85 (in a 70) in the passing lane and never moving over to the right lane, then you have essentially taken it upon yourself to flout the law and to make the passing lane your own personal traveling lane. If you're in the passing lane you should only be passing someone who's not doing the speed limit and then moving back to the traveling lane to again resume doing the posted speed limit yourself ~ IF you're someone who believes in following the law.

It seems people here want to argue it's ok to break the law when that law inconveniences them or they just plain don't like it. In what other circumstances do these FReepers believe it's ok to break laws that they don't like? Do FReepers no longer agree with the premise that we are a nation of laws, or does that apply only when it comes to laws they agree with?

Many States have roumdabouts now. Indiana, New York & Colorado all have them, it is the new traffic design for many intersections.

For someone who is so for the law, why do you admit it is ok to break it.

“If you’re in the passing lane you should only be passing someone who’s not doing the speed limit and then moving back to the traveling lane to again resume doing the posted speed limit yourself”

Where do you get that? Because that’s not what I said in that sentence you reposted.

I don’t dislike having to move “out of the way” (as you put it) as much as I object to the idea that someone who is six miles over the speed limit is driving hazardously slow. I get miffed with people who think there’s no speed limit at all (for them). And they insist that I’m the one who’s self-centered.

Yes you did.

I’ve seen several drivers holding their cellphones with their right hand to their left ear and driving with their left hand.

What's that all about? Really goofy.

Since you hardly ever have a problem finding a way to quickly get back into the right lane, I suppose I must conclude that either (1) you’re located where the traffic is relatively sparse, or (2) you’re a much better driver than I am, or (3) you routinely scare the tar out of people when you cut back in front of them and miss them by a foot or so. I get tailgated by speeders in the left lane who want me to move over immediately even when there is quite a lot of traffic in the right lane (which is the reason I was in the left lane to begin with).

Since I've never had a crash, I dismiss the safety argument.

Otherwise, consider it civil disobedience. Just because it's the law, it don't make it right.

FR presents an interesting coalition of (a) law-abiding citizens and (b) libertarians who wish to choose the laws they will obey and flout the rest. The majority on this thread are the latter, or so it seems.

You have admitted to speeding, only not as fast as the others but still speeding and picking which laws you wish to obey.

LOL! Guilty, but it’s self-defense! I drive six miles over the speed limit to please YOU and I still get yelled at and called a hypocrite.

Ratman, the difference is that I don't resent the driver in front of me. As long as he's going faster in the left lane than the traffic in the right lane is, and he's not under the speed limit, I figure he has a right to be using the left lane. I certainly don't think he's a problem if he's at the limit or a little bit over according to the usual grace given. (I do agree that if the right lane is wide open, that's the place to be unless passing.)

But you are still in the “later” and again make up your own justification.
