Riyadh – Worshippers at a mosque in a Saudi Arabian village near Mecca discovered they were praying for 10 years in the wrong direction, a newspaper in the country reported Thursday.
Muslims are meant to pray in the direction of the most sacred site in Islam, known as the Kaaba, a large granite structure in the holy city of Mecca.
Villagers in Hadda, 20 kilometres north-west of Mecca, should have prayed southeast, but instead bent down five times a day in a northern direction.
After realizing the error, the mosque’s leaders changed the direction of the prayer carpets so the worshippers now face the Kaaba.

Oh come on! You have got to be kidding. How ignorant can you get? I mean, I’d understand if it was a case of southeast vs south; or if they were in the middle of the city and they didn’t realize which side of town has the GD Kaaba. But this lack of awareness of where MECCA is - 15 miles away! - for TEN YEARS! - that wins the prize!

I could get my rotor antenna pointed in the right direction when I was a kid. I was sent up to the roof to turn it, and my dad sat in the living room and told me when it was aligned correctly. Why didnt they do something like that, seeing how they could probably see it if they stood up.
The God I believe in does not have those alignment problems.

Perhaps part of the problem is that they were indoors in a mosque.
In there were some turns between the entrance and the prayer room, it might not have been immediately obvious which way was southeast.
Their upended asses towards Mecca for all these years... they should be bombed for the insult to The Prophet!

If Hadda wasn’t perpetually cloudy, they could have figured out the correct direction. I’ve heard it is rarely sunny in Saudi Arabia.

Sura (9:29) - "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, even if they are of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."
Sura (9:30) - "And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away!"
Sura (9:123) - "O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness."
Sura (47:4) - "So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make them prisoners,"
Sura (61:4) - "Surely Allah loves those who fight in His way"
Sura (66:9) - "O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Hell will be their home, a hapless journey's end
From the Hadith:
Muslim (1:33) - the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah
Bukhari (8:387) - Allah's Apostle said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’”
Tabari 7:97 The morning after the murder of Ashraf, the Prophet declared, "Kill any Jew who falls under your power."
Ibn Ishaq: 327 - “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion.’”
Ibn Ishaq: 992 - "Fight everyone in the way of Allah and kill those who disbelieve in Allah."

A lot of Christian churches are oriented so that the altar faces the east. Christian burial are also often oriented to the east.
