I need some time away from our garden for some R&R. Does anyone need a ditch dug or 4 cords of firewood split and stacked or your barn painted...

Looks great! Our small city recently went to new garbage cans that allow mechanized pick up and thousand of good cans became nearly worthless overnight. I use mine for different purposes but I wonder how many are cluttering up back yards...

Bird seed — especially sunflower seed — should be good bait for a squirrel. I stopped feeding the birds around here when I caught a squirrel sitting in the bird feeder chomping away. Squirrels will go after corn too, and those “bricks” of bird seed that are all glued together with sweet stuff. They are meant to be contained in a cage and hung on shepherd’s hook. My squirrels will demolish them in 1 day, even though they are behind mesh.

I bought one of those spinning squirrel feeders to amuse my grandson. You stick dried corn cobs on spikes, the squirrel jumps on and the whole thing spins, supposedly thrwing him off. Ha! My daughter’s squirrels jumped on, stole the whole corn cob, and ran away with it.

The work never ends around here. We still don’t have all of the downed trees cleared away from November’s surprise ice storm. Every time I go around with the mower, I find more broken trees hiding in the thickets. Formerly beautiful evergreens, just snapped off. Obviously they have provided food and cover for the deer and rabbits though, so I guess that’s a good thing.

Working on the trees tomorrow and hoping I’ll also get some help with the weeds in the flower gardens. But, probably my husband (in fact probably doesn’t play a role in it) will have to go into work in the morning which will last all day and T-storms are predicted for Sun. and Mon.

And my provider changed garbage service this year too, so I dropped them. If they refuse to come up the long driveway for my trash, then I’ll just load it into the car and take it to the office to dump. Since the office pick up does not recycle plastic, that means I’m off the recycling grid too, except for office paper and aluminum. They think they are so smart, but sometimes they are so dumb.

Spent most of the week clearing out the jungle from over a foot of rain that fell in about 5 days.

Just have to thank you for the info last week about pruning tomato suckers. All the suckers are gone from my tomato plants. Have one grape tomato loaded with little green ‘matos. Can’t wait till some ripen.

Picked my very first carrot and onion yesterday. I was so thrilled that I actually got a carrot to grow rom seed, I sent pictures of it to my husband at work. My yell of joy and triumph started the dog enough to get her barking and she’s a real couch potato.

Now, if I could just figure out what bug is eating all my basil. Last year, I had more than I could deal with. This year, I had to make pesto with half basil and half parsley.

Come on down, we have a vacation house that needs painting, a storage shed that needs a door and painting, and many other projects too numerous to mention. LOL. Can’t afford to pay anything except maybe a jar of pickles of undetermined quality.LOL.

Ok need to get rid of squirrels? Place a trash can near a fence fill it 3/4 full of water. Float a frisbee up side down in the water and add you choice of bait in the center of the frisbee! Voilà!

Not Gardening related. Please skip if you're not into sewing :-)

Do you have an pictures of the costumes you've done. I did 43 Italian Renaissance costumes in 5-1/2 weeks for my son's drama club when they did Romeo & Juliet a few years back. But stage costumes don't have to be authentic, just look good from a distance :-)

Picture of some of mine, if you're interested - http://www.quilt.com/Bernina/RomeoandJuliet.html

Interesting, I'll mention it to Hubby. I know we have a Frisbee. Don't know if he has a barrel that still has water or not. My allotment is 2-30 gallon cans and they are down to 1-empty and may be 2 or 3 gallons in the other.

He has set the live trap, but some times they get in and out without tripping the dag thing. Thanks for the tip.

Yeh we gave up on bird seed decades ago, after trying many different things. We currently have a baffle to protect the wren's bird house which we hung in our shade tree in the play yard.

We also have a couple of bluebird houses that my Dad built. He loved to watch the Martins, but we had to take that down this year, because the starlings pecked out the holes and built nests.

They were advertised as being starling proof, and they were for about 4 years. There are several empty lots behind our yard that have wild berry bushes etc. and we have lots of nuts that the squirrels eat(can't remember what they are-Hubby says they are no good to eat). so the birds, squirrels and rabbits do ok even when we don't plant a garden.

We have several productive Black Walnut trees and a butternut tree that gave us a great crop in 2008. Had almost no nuts last year. This year we thought we would get a great bunch, but the tree dropped them all a few weeks back.

Where are you gardening, wita? Your hail storms sound pretty bad.

I am so frustrated that our home page flags have been deactivated ever since FR went down a couple of weeks ago.

We're both in SD.

If there's a place holder where the flag should be on the home page, just mouse-hover over it, and it will at least tell you which state's flag is missing.
