She hasn't even been officially confirmed as having the role, but Angelina Jolie is already receiving criticism over her possible portrayal of the legendary Queen of the Nile.

Heimdall the white?

That’s just weird. From wikipedia:

“Heimdall (Old Norse Heimðallr, later Heimdallr) is one of the æsir (gods) in Norse mythology, in the Edda called the “white god” (hvítastr ása “whitest of the aesir Sæm 72ª; hvíta ás “white as” Sn. 104).”

You know who drives me crazy? Disney. They will have a black mother, chinese son, and white dad in a movie and think it’s ok. I don’t care about race but geez, it’s like watching someone shove their irrationality in my face to prove to me how PC they are.

Now as to Cleo, I watched the show about how Cleo wiped out her whole family a few months ago. I thought it interesting. Some people did have problems with the science but I wasn’t following it that closly in order to really check it out.

I really watched it for the history; these “reconconstructing the person from the skeleton” things have always struck me as iffy.

BLACK people are all little angels.

A WHITE person must play the EVIL or STUPID role.

All one has to do is watch a few commercials to see the truth of what you posted!

North Africans are not black; they’re a sort of lightly tanned olive hue. How silly any way. Who really thinks these types of movies are historically accurate? And what bout all of these recent Greek movies with Irish, Scottish, and Americans in the lead roles? Wrong accents (not ancient Greek) and fellows like Brendan Gleeson have a sort of pinkish color when exposed to too much sun, and that’s not very Mediterranean like.

Because we all know Macedonians were Black people. [/sarc]

More mystical right wing "blood" nationalism from the "left."

"Hey, maybe Michele could play the role of the BLACK woman."

And Barry can play a Eunuch.

Did you know that Ramses the Great had red wavy hair? That is not conjecture, it is a known fact.

I do not think Cleopatra was a black woman. At least, not a black woman as defined by sub-Saharan Africans. It’s likely she was a caucasian woman with a bit darker skin than most Europeans.

The upcoming movie "Thor" will have an African American portray the Nordic god Heimdall -- and no one thinks that's odd?

Not to make too big a deal out of it, but have you noticed that European figures are routinely portrayed by Blacks but no white is ever allowed to portray an African, Asian, etc.?

I remember the old kids' show "Wishbone." Wonderful show, and the dog was adorable. Anyway, whenever they would reenact classic novels set in England or Europe there were always Blacks in the cast playing Europeans. And I really thought nothing of it till they did the mandatory "African heritage" episode based on African-American folklore. In flashbacks to Africa the only white who portrayed a character was the dog!

It all goes back to the dialectic. Whites are the antithesis, Blacks the thesis. The antithesis must admit the thesis into every part of its inner life or it is evil. The antithesis must also allow the thesis to maintain a lilly-pure segregated society which no "foreign devil" may defile with his presence--or again, it is evil.

The perfect illustration of all this is a statement by the late Rabbi Me'ir Kahana' (zt"l, Hy"d). He pointed out that in Israel Jews are not allowed to "oppress" Arabs by "defiling" their communities, while Jews are required to let Arabs live anywhere they want to. If a Jew "defiles" an Arab community he is a racist. If he doesn't allow the Arab to "defile" his own community, he is a racist.

Cleopatra was a Ptolomy of Macedonian decent from the “Caucusues” and thus a Caucasian.

Macedonia is in the Balkans, not the Caucasus.

or all the blacks in Spartacus and the director does it on purpose and admits that publicly that it’s to be inclusive and facts be damned

same with Tudors and all the blacks dressed in Renaissance garb at The Field of the Cloth of Gold

however: Race means nothing?

lol...it means everything in places and can cost you your life if you ignore that

Did you know that Malcolm X was called “Red” because of his red wavy hair? That is not conjecture, it is a known fact.

;)

The Egyptians obviously (from the pictures they left behind) saw themselves as racially distinct from ‘Nubians’ or black Africans. But from their own records we see that their early ruling dynasties were described as blacks out of Nubia.

But while in the early dynasties they might have been a ‘brown’ population ruled by a ‘black’ dynasty; there is no doubt that in the time of Ptolemy and Cleopatra they were a ‘brown’ population ruled by a ‘white’ dynasty.

But what does actual history matter when people have a racial axe to grind, no matter how far fetched their objection?

"Humm, was there a problem when Liz Taylor played Cleo?"

Not that I recall. I don't even remember there being an issue of her being Jewish, and playing an Eqyptian Queen. The only uproar that occurred was her torrid love affair with Richard Burton. She was married to Eddie Fisher at the time. If I recall, she received a million dollars for the part, the most ever paid to an actor. I was in high school when the movie came out, and remember going to the premier at one of the theaters in Rochester, NY. The only reason I got to go was the guy I was dating at the time worked as an usher, and got me in for free.

While the Egyptians themselves may have never been black black African black, the early ruling dynasties were.

The Nubians ruled Egypt from 745BC to 650BC...a small sliver of ancient Egyptian timeline

and they were not Negroid black as in North American slave ancestors

they were Kushite type peoples...fairly dark but not Negroid featured...or at least they sure didn't portray themselves that way in their artwork of themselves they had created nor do their descendents look they way today?

Question?

Why don't American Indians try to glom classical history in the same manner?

That fits my memories exactly. With one added thing. She worn an very revealing costume that caused some noise in my part of the world. Of course I was a teenage guy so the costume was OK with me!!!! I also think it was the most expensive movie ever made at that time.

Well usually it is done for them.

The myth of the ‘noble savage’ in perfect harmony with nature, etc.

The Mongolians were similarly a semi-nomadic people that had a naturalistic religion, and yet nobody attempts to ascribe to them the same “nobility”.

Yet does anyone doubt that if they had the military advantage, as the Mongols did over their enemies; that the Native Americans would not have been equally as savage in their conquests?

Then we come to the myth that most Americans like to perpetuate about their own family history that somewhere in there is the ‘red noble savage’ that somehow acquits them of their white guilt in being the descendants of a successful agricultural society that displaced a much less successful nomadic and horticultural society.
