Race row erupts over casting of Angelina Jolie as Cleopatra
Daily Mail ^ | June 17, 2010 | Sophie Forbes

She hasn't even been officially confirmed as having the role, but Angelina Jolie is already receiving criticism over her possible portrayal of the legendary Queen of the Nile. Jolie, who turned 35 last week, is caught up in a racially charged debate over whether the role should of been played by a black woman. The Egyptian royal was most famously portrayed Elizabeth Taylor in 1963.

The new film's producer, Scott Rudin, previously told USA Today the role is being developed with Angelina in mind as she has 'the perfect look'.

But this statement has angered members of the African American community. An Essence Magazine online story asks, 'Another White Actress to Play Cleopatra?'

this should be good.

I remember the most virulent conversation I got into with a black (and very conscious of it) coworker when I pointed out that Cleopatra was a Ptolemy. He got very angry.

There was a time when Upper and Lower Egypt were ruled by "black African" Nubian pharoahs.

Did you imagine that a major crossroads for world civilization and commerce that has been settled for thousands of years would NOT find itself with more than one kind of people?

The real Cleo (as represented on a coin from her time) was a supremely ugly woman.

“To the ignoramus Essence magazine: Cleopatra was Greek”

That was pretty much the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the article: She wasn’t Egyptian, she was Greek.

BTW, off the subject a bit, but the funniest mis-casting of a role I think I’ve ever seen was in a low budget 60’s film called “Che!”. Omar Shariff portrayed Che, but Castro’s part was played by none other than Jack Palance. Hilarious.

Essence magazine is staffed by dumbasses.

Here's the famous bust of Nefertiti, wife of Ankhnaten.

It seriously frosts me that these media cretins are parading their appalling, ignorant racism to the world and expecting an apology from reality.

She also taught us that white people sailed to Africa and caught black people in big nets and then brought them to America to be their slaves. You see, slavery only existed in America. Yes, we were really taught that...

Helen Thomas ‘s face was the original for the Sphinx.

Now you know why the Arabs called it “Abu Hol”, the Father of Terror.

"Eqyptians DO NOT consider themselves black! They had black SLAVES!"

Yes, you are correct, just look at images on urns/jars, picture glyphs and Egyptian art that has survived. This is just another attempt to rewrite history.

>>> "...should OF..." <<<

No editors, no software even, nothing caught such an obvious grammatical error???

Should 'OF' -- should be: should "HAVE"

OF is a preposition, not a verb.

It was my impression that there is a whole slew of "history" books written by blacks for blacks which proclaim that Egypt was the BLACK Cradle of Civilization ---- i.e., only "whitey" believes conventional traditional history.

Seriously.

There are lots & lots & lots of these black revisionist textbooks, and they are as dissimilar to conventional history as Black Liberation Theology is to mainstream Christian churches.

Make her a South Korean-born, Israeli Jewess as well and you'd have a trifecta of piss! The whole world's racist urinal would back up and explode!

Cleopatra and Marc Antony, from a coin minted by their government 2,000 years ago. Remarkably, even back then, racists were trying not to make her look like the African-American woman she really was. They made both rulers look Greek.

Similarly, in this digital portrait generated from Roman sculptures and a painting done in her lifetime, we also find that Cleopatra's African-American features have been suppressed by the Romans and the Egyptian artist. Again Cleopatra looks Greek, which is just silly, since we all know that she was Egyptian, and that Egypt is in Africa. Even her crown (which I've found in other works) is in the Macedonian (Greek) style.

This also makes me crazy! A whole generation has lost the concept of contractions and probably shouldn't be trusted with them!
