Hello all, Friday I was "downsized" from my position in Sales for an automotive supplier. I have a few leads that I feel I am well qualified for. My concern is a ercent drinking and driving conviction. Was a first time offense but still an offense. It was pleaded down to a four point ticket. What is your opinion of having a drinking convicion on your record when applying for medium level Managment positions?
Thanks
“You could take offense if these corrections were directed toward you, but clearly the original poster hasnt complained.”
I didnt take offense...I MOCKED it...and I wasnt aware forum participation was regulated to responding only to solicited responces...
IE: did I solicite your responce? or did you take issue with my mockery and offer your own two cents?
Your pots and kettles are as black as mine.
You’re in charge of hiring people? Really? Wow.
You’re correct, the employer just wants to be aware of the fact, the circumstances can easily permit employment with no problems (false arrest, not convicted, circumstances). Two areas with long term consequences are convictions of sex crimes or violence, even in the distant past.
Just be honest and agree to any background checks. If you’re a viable candidate, aside from the DUI, for the company, they’ll hire you. Just don’t drink and drive again—ever! Keep your head up.
Question: Do people applying for mid-level management positions generally have to fill out application forms? I wouldn’t think so
You must be kidding. People at the highest ends of management and the professons have to fill out applicatons these days.
I worked for a HR Manager once and I'll never do it again. Must be in their blood to be psycho. I ended up quitting because this woman was completely insane. She needed to be put in a straight jacket.
Example:
1) She opened up my desk drawer and separated my small and large paperclips. I was so floored I just sat there speechless.
2) It drove her crazy because she didn't believe how old I was. I was 36 and she thought I was in my early 20s.
3) Her office looked like a tornado hit it. Biggest scatter-brain I ever met in my life. It literally became impossible for me to do my job.
I'd rather pick up dog poo for a living than work for her again.
Total nut bar!
Yep. Hypocrites.
Let’s set down and have a brew while we think about this question.....another round of thinking.....now what was it you wanted?
99% of the people on this board that drink have been guilty at one time or another of driving while impaired. Or some other mistake, so just ignore the condescending hypocrites here. Just be upfront with potential employers and let them know you learned a valuable lesson from it. I have been in the same boat and just landed a great job as an engineer.
Yes, it very well could.
In time, it will lose it’s bite, but as you said, this is recent. Presently, it represents a risk in hiring you, over time, the risks will diminish.
If you’re not specifically asked about it, don’t give it up, but if you are, don’t lie.. be straight up and man up about your screwup, and hope they will still give you a chance.
Focus on your positives and be prepared to answer questions about the negatives. Accept the fact that you may need to get up off the dirt, dust yourself off and try, try again.
Stay strong and never give up.... and you will eventually be fine.
don’t know aboute about “medium level Management positions”
- but HIGH-LEVEL GOVERNMENT positions FOR SURE !!
Don’t take this personally, but if this came up in a background check I wouldn’t hire you.
I do hope you are seeking help for your drinking problem, though, and wish you the best.
Thanks for providing such clarity on your views. I’ll bear them in mind if you ever start a thread asking for advice and I am tempted to offer you some helpful comments.
Thank you and congrats on your new job!!
Hell and thank you for your reply. Is the question “have you ever been arrested?” or “have you ever been conviced of a felony?”
Thanks
One of the problems is that if you're driving a vehicle for the company, any accident exposes the company to liability issues. There will also be a significantly higher premium from the insurance company to cover you with a DUI for driving. In the fire service, too many speeding tickets will disqualify you, as it costs about a grand more a year to insure you.
Finally, with the unemployment rate being this high, employers can be a lot more selective. For any job, there will be several qualified candidates. Most employers will go with the one that represents the least risk, the one with nothing on their record.
Because of the risk of being sued for firing someone, most employers are far more averse to "giving someone a second chance."
That's the bad news. Other issues would be "is this an anomaly, or a pattern in your behavior?" Did you go for years, get a DUI, and that's it, or do you also have multiple speeding tickets, a public intoxication, several "driving without seat belt" tickets, etc. There are a lot of people out there with less than perfect records, so if this is a one time thing, it will help a lot.
It also depends on the type of job you're trying to get. For sales, if you can really sell, a lot of places will take you on if they can get the handcuffs off before your work day starts.
