Why do so many women wear flip-flops?

Posted on 05/28/2010 8:43:15 PM PDT by SamAdams76

OK, so I'm at the Dunkin Donuts this morning, it's a rather cool spring morning, about 50 degrees. I can see my breath in the air! Yet, every woman in the Dunkin Donuts were in flip-flops!

Now everywhere I go these days, it seems that the women are wearing flip-flops instead of regular shoes. Why is that?

I just don't get the appeal of wearing flip flops. I can understand wearing them at the beach. And when I was in Marine boot camp (Parris Island), we were issued a pair to wear to the shower. But anywhere other then the beach or the shower, I'm just not getting it. Why would you want to wear flip-flops instead of regular shoes?

Now get this, I go walking with the dog every morning for about 4 miles. Think I could do that in flip-flops? Think again. Nothing but hard-soled footwear for me. I wear hiking boots maybe 9 months out of the year. During the summer, I might switch to sneakers (New Balance) or maybe some Docksider boat shoes. But no flip-flops for me.

I'd like to see some woman follow me into the woods in flip-flops when I go hiking. Good luck with that. Try hiking Mt. Washington in a pair of flip-flops. You won't think flip-flops are so swell when you try that.

I'm not quite sure when women in flip-flops became the "in" thing. Back when I was younger, you just didn't see flip flops except maybe at the beach or in the shower like I mentioned before. Suddenly, all these women decide that this is what they want to wear. You even see woman in dresses with flip-flops. What is up with that? It's like if I wore a suit with sandals. It would be ridiculous. But for women, they seem to get away with wearing flip-flops with their business attire.

Also, isn't it uncomfortable to go walking around in flip-flops? Don't you feel vulnerable walking around in public with flip-flops? What if a nuclear bomb went off and you had to run for the hills? Wouldn't get very far in a pair of flip-flops. What if somebody with heavy boots was to stomp on your toes? If you were wearing regular shoes, not such a big deal. In flip flops, it's going to leave a mark.

Somebody, hopefully, will explain this flip-flop thing to me. I would like to understand. Thank you and good night.

Reading this, I enjoyed it so far ! As a guy who lives in Colorado, I don’t wear flip flops but Teva sandals. Like some other Coloradoans, I wear them year round. I am currently in California and I talked to this girl tonight who goes to school in Denver and she made a remark that quite a few Coloradoans wear them even in the winter time.

Funny thing, I very rarely wear shoes and wear my Tevas even when ushering at church on Sunday. At home with my wife being Japanese and no shoes in the house rule, sandals are much easier to put on and take off than shoes.

My GF always wears them which is cool by me because she has nice feet.

Now get this, I go walking with the dog every morning for about 4 miles.

Lighten up - that's 28 miles for him.

You’re thinking too hard about this.

I can’t stand them. I hate the way they feel between my toes so I wear leather sandals.

Island Girl completely doesn’t understand this thread. I’m sitting here with my beautiful, freshly pedicured toes thinking who in the world would cram them into nasty, uncomfortable shoes. Hawaii girls have lovely feet, by the way, because we grew up barefoot. I’m going off to admire my sparkly pink toes enhanced with Swarovski crystals, thank you very much....

I heard that the second toe being longer than the others is a sign of intelligence, or something. :o)

Guilty. Although in my defense, the weather is only warm enough here 2 weeks in the middle of July. I blame memory loss.

Personally, I’d take flip flops over crocs, and either over heels. But then I’m strange, so.

On a frigid 10 degree January morning in south central Pennsylvania my brother and I were in a place of business when he nudged me and motioned in the direction of a woman who had just come in the door; wearing flip-flops! As she walked past us he made this remark: “Behold the weaker sex.”

Yeah! Weaker sex. Anything that can bleed for 5 days every month, and keep on truckin’ as though nothing had happened, is not to be messed with!

And...those cheap plastic flip-flops get “blow-outs” quite easily, if I remember correctly.

Those are nice, but how do you keep your feet from sliding out/off the back when you walk? Never could get that part down.

They also show off big, ugly, crooked feet. Most often on hugely overweight women. Once sat next to a woman wearing flip-flops who had dirt under her toe nails and fungus on some nails, brown and crooked. Spoiled my appetite for days.
Flip-flops are Vietnamese dress shoes.

My husband says I have “cave-woman” feet. They are short but wide and I am convinced it was because we rarely wore shoes in the summer. Barefootin’ is the reason my feet are wide!!!

When I see so many women in flip flops I wonder if the sales of women dress shoe have gone down a bunch in the past few years. If so then don’t invest in womens shoe stocks. Maybe they wear flip flops instead of regular dress shoes so they can save money for other things like overpriced coffee, cell phone gadgets and i-pods.

Cause they’re convenient? I don’t wear my sandals very often, but I always make sure I have a pair of hush puppies handy.

I’m a woman, and I never found flip-flops comfortable at all. Like you, I always wear shoes or sneakers. There’s nothing bad-looking about my feet; I’m just more comfortable in shoes. It might be unusual for a woman to wear shoes all the time, though; I even wear shoes in the house. I know women who prefer to be barefoot all the time.
