One of the things that makes Iceland unique in Europe is the fact that Icelanders know the year the first settler, Ingólfur Arnarson, came to Iceland from Norway. The Icelandic script, Íslendingabók (Book of Icelanders), written by Ari the wise, tells of the first men coming to Iceland on explorations.
Three expeditions came to Iceland, but the first men who came to Iceland to live there permanently were Ingólfur and Hjörleifur. The two came to Iceland in 874. Hjörleifur was killed by his slaves, which only left Ingólfur and his wife Hallgerdur Fródadóttir. They settled in Reykjavík, now the capital of Iceland. An excavation in the center of Reykjavík seems to indicate that this story might be true. It shows that the remnants of building stem from the year 871+/-2 years. That website is worth examining. It has a number of interactive features and recreates the 871 environment.
In recent years some archeologists have begun to doubt that the first year of settlement was really around 870.

jiminy christmas. irish monks were there first? What on earth for??
They did not like noisy crowds.
:’) Aaaaaaaaay.
Is this the couple that I read about a couple of years ago? She was a Christian, and her husband built her her own, tiny chapel, even though he was not a Christian. I saw pictures of the chapel and it was barely large enough to hold one person.
Eventually they will figure out Ireland is the centre of the universe.;>)
Dia dhuit..Slainte
In the book “The Vikings” by Robert Ferguson, the author alludes to this, and states that the Irish monks possibly retreated to Iceland for something like solitude or penance.
Perhaps they heard of an island populated by teenage boys that needed religious teachings.
I had this theory about the older of a member you are on FR the bigger of a asshole you become..
Thank you for advancing my theory asshole....
Since you have GSP, you can narrow it down much further. It's St. Stephen's Green. If only Galileo and that Polish fellow, Copernicus, could have understood that, they would have saved us all a deal of trouble.
But then, they were probably using older GPS, and neglected a hand-steadying cup before fussing with their antique instruments.
By the way, genetically speaking, Icelanders are very Irish. The original deal being in order of a raid on Ireland on the way out to the housing development. Despite this advantage, they are NOT good drinking companions, having IMHO and observation, a morose and violent streak exacerbated by even the fumes of uisguebaugh.
The Icelandic gov makes a bottle of whickey about $100 bucks to try and curb this alarming Viking tendency and prevent ER overcrowding. Other than this tiny quirk, great people and very, very beautiful women.

Repetitio Mater Scientiae
its called a “geezer”. You didn’t invent the theory.
“great people and very, very beautiful women”.
Someone posted on another ping the reason Iceland has such beautiful women was on raids to Ireland they would take all the good-looking women back to Iceland....
I replied that would explain the large population of ugly women in Ireland..:>)
Ayuh, I can see you ain't never been to Maine! Olympia Snow is actually considered a hottie 'round heah!
Doesn't make sense unless Ingólfur and his wife Hallgerdur Fródadóttir were the slaves. Or maybe slaves didn't count in Iceland.
