Based on the hundreds of e-mails, Facebook comments and Tweets I've read in response to my denunciation of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's decision to honor Confederates for their involvement in the Civil War -- which was based on the desire to continue slavery -- the one consistent thing that supporters of the proclamation offer up as a defense is that these individuals were fighting for what they believed in and defending their homeland.
In criticizing me for saying that celebrating the Confederates was akin to honoring Nazi soldiers for killing of Jews during the Holocaust, Rob Wagner said, "I am simply defending the honor and dignity of men who were given no choice other than to fight, some as young as thirteen."

People get so caught up in the *past* “north vs south” issue that they fail to see the importance/pertinence of the ~constitutional principles~ of state’s rights vs. federal tyranny and off we go into the wild, blue tangents.

One of the greatest tragedies of the Civil War was to link secession with war. Secession just means leaving an organization. Secession is war/violence neutral. The reaction to it may be violent but the act itself is not.

If the Confederates were the champions of local decentralized government that their latter-day fans make them out to be, they would have had no objection to West Virginia going their own way.
Were confederate soldiers terrorists?
Did they attack and murder civilians on behalf of a political cause as a policy? If yes, they were. If no, they were not.
