One of the greatest tragedies of the Civil War was to link secession with war. Secession just means leaving an organization. Secession is war/violence neutral. The reaction to it may be violent but the act itself is not.

In a theoretically perfect world [one in which the constitution were strictly adhered to] that is true.

*But*, we had a president who refused to yield to constitutional law, as put forth by the founders.
