Here is another source for garden seeds in the Pacific North West and short season areas. http://humeseeds.com/ I have never used him as I am a long time buyer from Territorial Seed in Oregon.

We had another .8 inch of rain from 9 this morning until about 1 this afternoon. ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

Did a little garden work today...put a pair of Tumbling Toms (one red, one yellow) into their hanging baskets. I’ll leave them out in good weather, and keep them inside during bad. By the time they get too long to manage; any potential for frost will be past. Put an early jalapeno into its 3-gallon container, and a jalapeno goliath into its 5-gallon container...need the early start; fresh salsa cravings are too much to bear.

Here's a link to the camera we have - http://www.moultriefeeders.com/catalog.aspx?catid=infraredgamecameras

We've had it for a few years. Gotten some really good pictures - works day & night. Got some great pictures of deer at out place in Vermont. Only problem was when we let it in Vermont for the Winter months, the battery died.

Also, found another culprit in the "Where did the peas go?" (Yes, it is a duck!!) Since this is a raised bed I'm a bit surprised.

Thanks for the link. My wife doesn’t really want to know what evil lurks in the darkened outdoors...

The Germans around here are from Pommern and proud of it. Every year they put on a festival for the town called Pommerntag where they tell their stories. Many of them still live on the land that their ancesters bought when thy came from Pommerania — “cash silver on the barrel”, as they are fond of telling.

I read the history of one family here whose ancestry boasts the shortest marriage in the history of Ozaukee County. It seems that the bride’s mother and the groom’s father got into an argument at the wedding reception over the “bride price” and mama grabbed her daughter from the reception and took her home before the wedding night, never to return to her husband’s home. There was a divorce and each later married somebody else.

It was interesting about how the generations provided for each other before Social Security. It was common when the elders reached retirement age for the younger farm family to build a small house for the grandparents and the younger family to move into the big house. Committed to paper was an agreement drafted at that time about how much of the crop would be devoted for the care of the elders and what work the elders had to do to help out on the farm.

Not word of mouth — an actual contract written in black and white was generated.

The “recipe” I’m using is 1/3 vermiculite (the coarser, the better.) 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 compost — as many different kinds as you can get. I got mine from about 4 different sources, since my home compost is not ready yet. I also added composted manure and worm manure for an extra kick. That is called “Mel’s Mix” after Mel Bartholomew of Sq. Ft. Garden fame.

Somehow the Honda CRV was undamaged - she slid btn metal light standards and those large (3’ x 5’) on ground electrical boxes after jumping the curb and ultimately came to rest 5’ from a brick building.

She was quite shook up; we normally “pray the day” before she leaves for work in the morning but I was already gone when she left...two more days of snow and then, just maybe, we can be rid of the stuff for a few weeks.

I did notice some tiny sprouts in the garden late this afternoon (before it started snowing, again)where we planted lettuce and parsley 2 weeks ago. Some hardy seeds, those.

I am looking at a 2 year old iPod Nano on my desk with 000 miles on it as my grand kids can’t find time to show me how to use it!

I know what you mean. we have 3 different remotes to watch TV, because the sound is routed through the DVD player, and they each have a bazillion buttons on them. Drives me nuts.

A variety of cherry tomato that you can grow in hanging baskets...very productive. Great for picking and tossing right into a salad, but many of them don’t make it into the house...I grow red and yellow ones.

From what I understand, the grocery store varieties are treated to extend shelf life and to keep them from srputing so easily. You need to buy "seed potatoes" from your garden supply, or your feed supply store. They aren't in yet here -- expected this week. Or, you can try mail order on the web. The following is a web link that was given earlier for a place that sells small quantities for the home gardener: Ronniger's Potato Farm

Most grocery store potatoes are treated to help keep them from sprouting eyes. You can grow them but you may not get good results. Seed potatoes will ensure you are growing the variety you want and they are disease free.
