3/15/10 | Vanity

What are the minimum questions to answer on the short form census?

PLEASE! if you don't know the LEGAL answer, don't make stuff up. I'm not looking for opinion, I'm looking for facts, backed up by a link.

This will be very helpful for a lot of folks.

Tuesday night is pizza night in my house. What if a giant chunk of cheese landed on the census form and I didn’t see it until the next morning. Then there’s the dreaded ring from the orange juice glass for breakfast. It doesn’t define a penalty for having a giant grease stain and orange juice ring on my new census form.

Yes, these requirements are part of the Privacy Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-579).

I will only be answering the number of persons in my household. That's it.

If I am hounded by a "visitor," I will require that this form be completed. I doubt that it will because I'm certain that I'll get that deer in the headlights look from my government visitor.

That's your free tip for the day.

See, not all of the lawyers are blood-sucking degenerates. Some of us are the good guys.

What about leaving your name blank or not filling that in?

This part was just too funny:

“Please also be aware that the e-mail you received about the 2010 Census, which falsely claimed to be from the Better Business Bureau, is inaccurate...”

4th Amendment arguments aside, if you don’t answer every question you are liable for a $5000 fine.
Not kidding.

census.gov:

http://www.census.gov/acs/www/SBasics/What/What1.htm

The American Community Survey is conducted under the authority of Title 13, United States Code, Sections 141 and 193, and response is mandatory. According to Section 221, persons who do not respond shall be fined not more than $100. Title 18 U.S.C. Section 3571 and Section 3559, in effect amends Title 13 U.S.C. Section 221 by changing the fine for anyone over 18 years old who refuses or willfully neglects to complete the questionnaire or answer questions posed by census takers from a fine of not more than $100 to not more than $5,000. The U.S. Census Bureau may use this information only for statistical purposes. We can assure you that your confidentiality is protected. Title 13 requires the Census Bureau to keep all information about you and all other respondents strictly confidential. Any Census Bureau employee who violates these provisions is subject to a fine of up to $250,000 or a prison sentence of up to five years, or both.

You may view Title 13 at the U. S. House of Representatives website at the following address: http://uscode.house.gov/download/title_13.shtml.

I have to rant - RACE AND NATIONALITY ARE NOT THE SAME THING — who the hell comes up with these questions? Why a whole damn question about latino origin? If Chinese, Japanese and Filipino are races, shouldn’t Frenchie and United Statesian be races too? I think so. I want to understand why these questions exist and why these possible answers exist and other don’t because they seem to have an agenda.

I wonder how much they'll spend on the SWAT team to collect that.

I don't know but I'll tell you what I answered:

Question 1, question 2, question 7 (age, but not birth date), question 9 (other, American) and I guess I could have answered question 10 but I didn't.

Goes without arguement that you may very well be right but...

They will audit and or question anyone they deem fit for auditing or questioning - that is neither here nor there.

Some of the questions on this census are:
what is person 1’s name
(first last and middle initial)

what is person 1’s age...
race...
sex...
house or mobile home? (are you serious?)
phone number...
how is person number 1 related to person number 2 etc...
I notice that they stop short of asking us if we are here legally or not.

And obama has seen fit to make sure that this information goes from our homes and private lives straight on up to him at the white house?

And any - any single one of us - should care about an audit?

I answered the one - required question honestly and that is all that is required by the constitution.
Not even Obama is above the constitution.

If I get audited or questioned I’ll come back and sound the alarm here on the boards but I’m not expecting it since -
let’s face it!? Am I the only one who will be doing such a thing? I tend not to think so at this point.

My thought exactly. Why mail out a form on March 15 that is applicable to April 1? Do we hold onto it until then or do we send it back marked “unknown”?

And for the record, I am only answering how many. The Census is an “enumeration”, no more, no less. I’m not going to be a party to further gerrymandering.
