American salt manufacturers began iodizing salt in the 1920's, in cooperation with the government, after people in some parts of the country were found to be suffering from goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland caused by an easily-preventable iodine deficiency. People require less than 225 micrograms of iodine a day. Seafood as well as sea salt contains iodine naturally and the supplement is unnecessary if there are sufficient quantities of either in one's diet. Note: Natural sea salt is a healthy replacement for ordinary table salt.

I learned about iodized salt in school cooking class. Did not see any reference to the thyroid/iodine requirement in yesterday’s post on the proposed ban.
Looks as if we will all soon be walking around with big ol’ goiters.

Most table salt has sugar in it, one would presume to enhance the flavor.
Not that I care if people want to eat sugar, but most would not suspect it to be in their salt.

It appeared that they were proposing to ban salt shakers on restaurant tables - but it might go so far as prohibiting chefs from using it as a recipe ingredient.
The French would have a bloody revolution over this!!!!!!!!!
This will hurt the tourism industry!!!

Avoid packaged goods and you can use pretty much as much salt as you care to in your cooking. Sodium from packaging (especially canning) and as a preservative is for more contributory to consumption levels than proper seasoning of fresh foods.

I don't know if you're a real doctor or not - nor do I care - medicine is but another profession and a doctor is first and formost, a human. The intake of anything from salt to tobacco is only a problem when forced upon the consumer.
We have labeling laws in America and all ingredients - including sodium - is printed on practically everything, therefore it comes down to choice...and choice is very American.
So, if I choose to salt my food it will only be an issue if someone else is paying for my healthcare...*poof*...obamacare.
This total farce is for controlling our lives; if Americans want salt on their food, they will simply take it to the restaurant with them. They tried prohibition, and that didn't work either.
All the punitive, liberal laws do is drive the practices and products they object to, underground. Black markets spring up everywhere for every "banned" product. The government has Mexican nationals growing pot in our National Parks and can't do a thing about it...yet they want to confiscate our salt shakers.
After salt, comes pepper. There will be no end to this madness until we collectively tell them to "stuff it".
Forcing Americans to give up our freedom to cater to the whims of pimple-faced geeks who are still seeking utopia is stupid...and you can't fix stupid.
