One of the finest comedy movies ever made was the Mel Brooks classic Blazing Saddles. Its a cult classic thats still aired on TV today. The films dialogue is riddled with racist, sexist, bigoted speech. The N word is used 17 times. Yet, 36 years after the films debut the N word is bleeped whenever its broadcast on television. It isnt because the movie was insensitive to racism in 1974. Quite the opposite. The bigotry is an intentional punch line at the expense of the bigoted. Sensitivity to mere words has neutered an extraordinarily important commentary on race in film.
Mel Brooks, like so many entertainers of his era made his living skewering racial, religious, ethnic, and social mores. Brooks, a Jew, was quite fond of poking fun of his heritage. His movies have lampooned Hitler, Nazis, and the Holocaust. It makes the N word seem like Sesame Street.

I started out my Army career as an M1A1 tank platoon leader...fortunately they have an NBC overpressure system that will vent a tank pretty quickly, even when you’re buttoned up. Also, MOPP suits do in fact, filter from the inside out!
Qualifications?
Applicant: Rape, murder, arson, and rape.
Hedley Lamarr: You said rape twice.
Applicant: I like rape.
There are quite a few web sites dedicated to getting Disney to finally release this great movie on DVD in the US, and also spend quite a bit of time on its history.
The period depicted was post-slavery, but still close enough where emancipation hadn't been fully realized. The film was released in 1949, so that explains a lot about the characters.
Man, I'm tired of walking on eggshells...
” ‘Political Correctness’ is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.” Anonymous
Mel Brooks is a comic genius. High Anxiety is another favorite of mine as well.
I’m pretty sure it was from this site. http://www.theclassicsonly.com/songofthesouth.html
They usually cut that part off when they play it on tv. That and the bean scene.
You could never get away with this today:
Taggart: I got it! I know how we can run everyone out of Rock Ridge.
Hedley Lamarr: How?
Taggart: We’ll kill the first born male child in every household.
Hedley Lamarr: [after some consideration] Too Jewish.
Did hear tale of a line that was cut from the movie though. The scene with Bart and Lilly, when they're in the dark, she said, 'is that your elbow?'
How about:
Lili Von Shtupp: Hello, handsome, is that a ten-gallon hat or are you just enjoying the show?
Got my movies mixed up - same voice...
“What in the Wide, Wide, World ‘O Sports is a-goin on here?”
Yeah, but do you like movies about Gladiators?
Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, but it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.
“And Disney has locked away their classic movie Song of the South because of political correctness. “
I actually got a copy a couple years ago off the internet for ten bucks or so, and enjoy it thoroughly . . . and so do all my friends, black and white, old and young.
Also bought the complete set of Amos and Andy and really get a kick out of them.
Incredible what the thought police have done to great comedy.
The writer of this article deserves a laurel, and hardy handshake.
I miss Madeleine.
