The ruins of Detroit

At the beginning of the 20th Century, the city of Detroit developed rapidly thanks to the automobile industry.

Until the 50's, its population rose to almost 2 million people. Detroit was the 4th most important city in the United States.

It was the dazzling symbol of the American Dream City with its monumental skyscrapers and fancy neighborhoods.

Increasing segregation and deindustrialization caused violent riots in 1967. The white middle-class exodus from the city accelerated and the suburbs grew. Firms and factories began to close or move to lower-wage states. Slowly, but inexorably downtown high-rise buildings emptied.

Since the 50's, "Motor City" lost more than half of its population.

Nowadays, its splendid decaying monuments are, no less than the Pyramids of Egypt, the Coliseum of Rome, or the Acropolis in Athens, remnants of the passing of a great civilization.

Thank you very much for this post! It’s the best of Detroit’s ruins that I’ve seen. Truly fascinating.

Wow! Really sad to see some nice Victorian era buildings turn into ruins. People would pay big money to live in houses like that in other still functioning cities.

Are all of these buildings beyond repair?

Some of the furniture indicates a not too distant abandonment

A bleak, horrendous testament to the destructive, corrosive power of the UAW and Johnson’s “Great Society” programs of wealth redistribution and social engineering.

Heartbreaking. I was born here. My mother used to say once upon a time Detroit was the most beautiful city in the country. Looking at the her old photographs and the architecture in these photos, I believe her.

What was done is nothing short of a crime.

Detroiter here. Looks like they got it about right. Some good news: the Fort Shelby has been renovated and apparently is very nice. Baltimore Colts used to stay there back in the day (50 years ago).

When I was small I used to think I lived in one of the greatest States in the Union.

I now shed a tear for what the leftists have done to my Michigan.

I will have to stay here in Virginia since there is nothing more to go home to.

One of the photos is of the William Livingston house.

Here's a video of the house coming apart:

My guess would be that they are environmental hazards and the rules to renovate would be extremely costly. With that said, usually the historic society demands keeping the architecture.
