Massive head of pharaoh unearthed in Egypt

Egypt's Culture Ministry says a team of Egyptian and European archaeologists has unearthed a large head made of red granite of an ancient pharaoh who ruled Egypt some 3,400 years ago.

A ministry statement Sunday said the team discovered the head of Amenhotep III wearing the traditional white crown of the southern kingdom buried in the pharaoh's mortuary temple on the west bank of the Nile in the southern city of Luxor.

Imagine the labor involved in that. With our equipment even a small piece of worked granite is expensive.

That's what I was wondering. The finish work of that statue is so smooth. How did they do it without modern diamond cutting blades? Next to diamond, granite is one of the hardest substances.

Great find. I am amazed and fascinated every time they make a discovery like this. The craftsmanship is amazing.

Looked it up. Red and Black granite is #7 on the Mohs scale so they used emery, #9 on the scale,which they had to import as it is not found in Egpyt

Still..even roughing it out would have been incredibly time consuming.
