great-grandmother’s brother (Sergeant from Pennsylvania) who actually died a POW

One of the "fortunate" soldiers that survived the horrors at the Andersonville Prison Camp

May God rest the sould of your great-grandmother’s brother, that he gave everything so that so many may be free. I humbly provide what honor I can to such a great man.

I’m currently reading (actually listening on audio book) the civil war books by Shelby Foote. These pics really bring it to life. War is hell.

FANTASTIC link, thank you for posting!

My husband’s great-great-grandfather was a merchant in Harpers Ferry before the war, owned a confectionery/bakery there. He was the first civilian to die in Harpers Ferry, here’s his story - http://www.nps.gov/hafe/historyculture/frederick-roeder.htm

His house is in one of the photos on the link you posted.

One of my Union ancestors was captured at Chickamauga. He was taken first to Belle Isle in Richmond, then to Danville, VA where a tobacco warehouse was converted to a prison. Finally he was moved to Andersonville. He died of scurvy there three months before the end of the war.
