FAIRFIELD, Calif. --A Fairfield teen used a ninja sword to fend off a mountain lion after it attacked his dog Wednesday afternoon.
Marquel Dawson, 19, was playing with the pit bull and German shepherd mix in a nature area near Fairview Place at about 1:30 p.m. when the mountain lion attacked.

p.s. i have a bobcat skull a friend found in the forest, and i sure as h#ll wouldn't want those teeth anywhere near my throat.
Mad Ninja Skills!
Well, if it had been a full blooded pit bull, he may have not needed the sword. I had a pit bull once that I got the vet to classify as a “Dojo de Argentino”. Trained in Argentina to grab a jaguar by the snout.
parsy, who misses Boo
In 1965 I was hunting and saw the south end of a north-bound cougar in northern Vermont, 8 miles from Canada. Big cat. In 1998 I saw a cougar at a zoo take down a crow that flew in the zoo enclosure while I and my family and loads of tourists were watching the big kitty cats. Unless unless a person has seen them fairly close by and in action, they can’t visualize their speed, size, and focus on killing the target. The mountain lions, as well as any pissed-off wild boars or any hungry bears, are the only game in North America that, in my humble opinion, can make it an even match for a good eye and plenty of rifle. For this guy to grab a ninja sword and go for it, he was either really stoned or that dog owes him.
Aren’t dogo argentinos and pit bulls totally different breeds?
Mountain Lions are dangerous critters - VERY.
But the Bambi crowd in the east, like the Bambi crowd in California and Colorado, will oppose hunting them even if they start running off with their children.
Hike with a pistol?
in colorado, in a national forest, you're d@mn right! after encountering a bear c. 8 ft. away (we surprised it, she had a cub, it was fall when they are trying to store fat, and my girlfriend was on her period ((wounded animal=easy kill to the bear)), you're d@mn right i carry a gun whenever i go into the wilderness.
of course, the stealthy nature of mountain lions is an additional problem.
Well, Boo kinda favored pictures I found on the net. Pit bulls were illegal where I lived, and strangely, dogs trained to grab jaguars by the snout, were not. So, not knowing specifically where Boo came from, I made the very cogent argument that he could have come over with some of the illegal immigrants from down South America way and got loose.
parsy, who misses his pit bull
Here in Florida I was hunting wild hogs and saw a Florida panther (aka cougar). The brush was incredibly thick and it was nerve racking. I was hunting with a rifle and a handgun just in case.
Of course. Here in Wisconsin the DNR wackos won’t even admit they’re dangerous. Too bad DNR asshats aren’t their favorite food.
How many jaguars does a pit bull have to go through to get that training? Or how many pit bulls does one jaguar go through to find a trainable pit bull?
Such a poorly written story. Did he kill the lion? It doesn’t say. How far away from the scene of the attack was his garage, where he went to get the sword?
Fairfield is a loooooooooooong way from the mountains of California. We lived right next door in Vallejo for 5 years.
Another vote for hellyeah. Mountain lions are killing machines, and I get out into fairly remote areas in CO and TX sometimes. I am *not* going to fend one off with a "Ninja Sword" (Katana? Iaito? WTH are they talking about "Ninja Sword?).
Best thing that's happened was when people were allowed to pack in national parks this year. Mr. Lion doesn't leave his weapons at home...
Cf. Wheaton taking aim to reduce coyote population from today's Daily Herald.
Traditionally, Wheaton and other municipalities have used public awareness campaigns to educate residents on how to coexist with coyotes. The biggest piece of advice has been to never feed or get close to the animals.
But Wheaton officials say the number of coyotes has risen significantly. And despite efforts to educate the public, the coyote problem has reached "a nuisance level" in the city.
Note they plan to "capture and euthanize" them. Even so, the comments run heavily in favor of the coyotes. From "Animal Lover" - "Wheaton officials - How about if we start with you first??"

That’s still 12 days away on Feb 22, 2010.
