WELLINGTON, New Zealand – This Scotch has been on the rocks for a century.

Five crates of Scotch whisky and two of brandy have been recovered by a team restoring an Antarctic hut used more than 100 years ago by famed polar explorer Ernest Shackleton.

Ice cracked some of the bottles that had been left there in 1909, but the restorers said Friday they are confident the five crates contain intact bottles "given liquid can be heard when the crates are moved."

“For scotch? Wouldn’t a Kennedy drink Irish?”

Papa Joe bootlegged Scotch whisky during Prohibition. Scotch and Irish whisky’s are of course quite similar in taste, and many would not be able to tell which was which...unless it was Black Bush from the Bushmills distillery (oldest licensed in the world) in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

A warship of the day carried more rum than fresh water.

I always take my scotch neat.

Sure you wouldn't prefer on the rocks? It is the Antarctic, after all. Ice, we've got!

Didn’t these guys all perish there? This might shed some light on what happened. Maybe they all got plastered and on a whim decided to get naked and run outside their hut and make snow angels or something. Who knows. Hard liquor + deathly cold = maybe not so good an idea.

People knew how to live back in the day. I envy their freedom and spirits.

It’s how they kept warm. After a few shots, the northern lights looked reeeal good.

you can’t see the Northern lights from Antarctica

Century-old scotch? That’s enticing enough that even Ted Kennedy will dig out of his grave to get his hands on.

My nomination for post of the week...

I think Scotch only ages while still in the cask, once it is bottled it done aging. The historical value must be incalculable.

Sir Ernest Shackleton, right
