“70+ Companies Recruiting at 19th Annual Virginia Tech Job Fair
Public Encouraged to Attend”
SNIPPET: “FALLS CHURCH, Va., March 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The National Capital Region Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association will hold its 19th annual Job Fair on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Northern Virginia Center (7054 Haycock Road, Falls Church, VA; located across from the West Falls Church Metro station) from 2:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.
In a sign that companies are still hiring during these tough economic times, this year’s fair will offer candidates opportunities from more than 70 companies and government agencies. Virginia Tech sponsors the fair, but all job seekers are invited to attend. Companies have openings of all levels in areas such as engineering, information technology, accounting, finance, management, sales/marketing, building construction and government contracting. A complete listing of all attending companies is located on our website, http://www.ncrjobfair.org. There is no fee to participate, but attending company proceeds help fund scholarships for local high school students to attend Virginia Tech. “
My background is in education. Didn't work out, long story. I got a job in fast food, the owner thought "Hey, maybe she has organizational skills" and asked me to run his catering operation.
Basically, I need an end product at a specific location at a specific time. So I go person A and say, "I need your product at X time, start cooking at Y". Person B, "I need your product at X time, start putting it together at Z." I put it all together and get it out the door and delivered to where ever. There are also a few items specific to catering of which I manage the inventory.
My husband says I'm managing a supply chain. I'm not crazy nuts about food, I work part-time and make just over minimum wage.
I've been looking into supply chain jobs to see what kind of computer skills, education they are looking for. I'm seeing a lot of business degrees, which I am NOT willing to do at this time, but APICS (an association) offers certification programs.
Does anyone know if these programs are even reasonable for someone without a business degree (the website made it sound reasonable, but they want money for the courses)? Could they help me get my foot in the door for an entry or low-middle position?
