Imagine sailing across a lake, looking down, and seeing the top of a tower coming up towards you.
That's what villagers have been doing for centuries at Lake Kçkçekmece in what is now Turkey.
They told archaeologists from Kocaeli University and the Istanbul Prehistoric Research Project that they thought it was the minaret of a sunken mosque.
The archaeologists sent divers down and found an ancient lighthouse at the edge of a sunken city.
Using documents written by geographers centuries ago, the archaeologists have now identified the city as the ancient Byzantine port of Bathonea.
1600 years ago, the port was located on the edge of this ancient lake which flows into the Sea of Marmara, the body of water which links the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
As the lake silted in and the water level rose, the city was both flooded and buried.
The site is located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the ancient city of Byzantium, which was later renamed Constantinople, and finally renamed Istanbul.
Archaeologists believe that excavation of the ancient city's extensive remains may take as long as a century.

Minaret of a sunken mosque: The town of Old Halfeti, now mostly submerged under the waters of the Birecik Dam.
Possibly I misunderstand, because 1600 years ago there were no mosques since the moon cult had not yet been born.
bump
Most Muslims are too stupid to know how to count years. For if they did, they wouldn’t make such stupid claims as ‘Jesus was a Muslim’ and ‘the Temple in Jerusalem was an Islamic Mosque’.
“Minaret of a sunken mosque: The town of Old Halfeti, now mostly submerged under the waters of the Birecik Dam.”
It looks like a large bird house! ;-)
Yeah, that’s it! I love the TV antenna too.
That statement is pure bigoted ignorance
