If its new concept truck is any indication, General Motors Co. may enter the hip urban mini-truck fray against the Kia Soul and Nissan Cube.
GM's GMC brand unveiled the short, wide Granite at the Detroit auto show Monday. It's a cross between a panel truck and a minivan. GM says it's loaded with electronics and features that appeal to young professionals.
The Granite's sides open like French doors, and its rear seats flip or fold to the side, creating enough space for a mountain bike, even with the tailgate closed.
If GM decides to build the Granite, it would be the smallest vehicle ever assigned to the GMC brand.

Get in kids, we're going to Mc'D
Part car + part truck = cruck
That’s it?!? That’s not a truck, that’s a Cooper Mini with a glandular problem.
Looks like something that just rolled out of that godforsaken "Pimp My Ride" show.
That’s what happens when GM does away with Pontiac. What brand do you suppose is going to get all those ugly crossover vehicles?
“but has been optimized to feel much larger.”
That is just what I told my first girl friend!
Wow, that picture makes it look really small. Looks like something you could be buried in. I wonder if that’s an option.
I peeled off that sticker on the mirror, "Objects are larger than they appear," and stuck in on my bed's headboard.
But, when I bought the 1500 Crew Cab in short bed, I knew I wouldn't do it inside the bed with the tail gate up.
ever checked out the interior of the scion xb? that thing is huge! tons of legroom. even with the front passenger seat pushed all the way back my long legged teen boy had a ton of space to stretch out. and space for his feet (which need their own zip code). i was amazed. and plenty of head room also. that being said there is only like 6 inches of cargo space at the back and the darn thing sits too close to the ground. and if that wasn’t bad enough it does not come with all wheel drive. if they would jack it up, give it awd, and lengthen it out for plenty of cargo space i might give it a second look. until then i will keep trying to find the car that fits my family. too bad 1958 station wagons don’t have air bags and all wheel drive cause that right there would be my dream car.
i know a guy who has one of those. he put a corvette motor in the b!tch and it will kill someone eventually.
Maybe if you curled up. If they're going to try and sell this thing, I'd go more boxy and try to compete in the Scion XB and Cube category rather than calling it a truck.
GM just doesn't do funky very well.
Thank God I sold my GM stock!
Man, that thing’s tiny! Just as predicted, GM and Chrysler will be coming out with nothing but UmpaLumpaMobiles.
On the other hand, it does look like it’s perfect for competing with the PT Cruiser.
After my initial thot, Thank God I sold my GM stock, yours was my second thot, that is one ugly econo van—it doesn’t even look like a truck. It looks like a Chevy HHR that has morphed into something evil—on steroids. Who came up with this design. Oh yeah, that would be GM GOVERNMENT motors.
Yet, they discontinued what seemed to be many popular cars such as Saturn VUEs.
Nothing with only four wheels is a “truck.”
Even 1-ton dually pickups are not “trucks.” They’re “pickups.”
When we get to F-450’s/F-550’s, then we’re finally into “light trucks.”
Cool!
Well from the looks of this Ford shouldn’t have any problems selling trucks.
It's called a Ford Expedition. Or a Chevy Tahoe/Suburban.
This GMC prototype is getting an unfair rap here on FR, like most innovative, smaller vehicles. So, it doesn't tow a boat, or hold a sheet of plywood. Plenty of useful vehicles don't, and there is a market for them.
On the plus side, this concept will offer the packaging advantages of the Scion xB, which was an obvious influence. Those advantages are an amazing amount of room for the exterior size, and the exreme flexibility in configuring that interior space. This GM effort is better looking though, more aggressive, very wheel-oriented for more visual excitement and is overall a more aesthetically appealing vehicle than either the xB or the Soul. With a 1.4 liter four cylinder, fuel efficiency should be well into the mid-30's as far as highway mileage. That's a lot of function with a low operating cost, which has it's appeal even with controversial styling.
On the down side, GMC styling cues are probably what is making this boxy little minivan/station wagon more beefy and appealing. But, such a vehicle is highly questionable in the GMC "Professional Grade" market positioning. The larger Terrain is even questionable. They're running the risk of muddying the waters, as far as the meaning of GMC. That's what killed Saturn, Pontiac and Oldsmobile. The brand ceased to mean much of anything. GMC does. They should leave it alone, and stick with trucks, SUVs, offroad vehicles and work vehicles. This thing should be badged a Chevrolet. But, it won't, because it'll cannibalize the HHR.
Should GMC decide to offer a diesel option, get an all-wheel drive option in it, work on the content as far as techical "gear" and functional add-ons, maybe it can be made to reside comfortably in the GMC lineup. If they know what's good for them, this is what they'll do.
