Even though I didn’t care for the film version of The Langoliers, I loved the story. While reading, I kept looking behind me to see if the past was being eaten up.
Oh I so agree.
Your a nut...shashank Redemption was incredibly good. Misery was good. The shining was very good. You must have forgot about them.
Bookmark for later reading / chatting. Thanks JPB.. you find good “stuff”. d
I had the unfortunate experience of watching Shawshank with some friends.
You were probably to immature at the time to appreciate it. I felt the same way about Shindler’s List...I hated it. I was about 20 when it came out and thought it sucked. When I told my Mom how boring it was, she was kinda surprised because she enjoyed it so much. Well I saw it again 15 years later and thought it was fantastic. Try it again when you mature and you will find a different result.
The end of that series turned me on S. King. Was never a BIG fan but that just pissed me off after slogging through all the previous installments. You're right tho', that is a good opening line.
I always liked”Christine”. Didn’t translate into movies very well.
Literary junk food.
The Stand is a great mini-series I’ve watched twice since 2005. The virus that wipes out most of the world’s population was a super-flu bug produced in a government lab! Pretty current for a 1978 book and 1994 movie. Aspects of survival ism, working with others to live another day and beat the enemy are also in the movie. One of the main characters (Stuart) is a good guy from Texas - that always helps :-)
Here’s a review I found (perhaps at IMDB) discussing the spiritual overtones that make the movie so interesting to watch, “There is little doubt in this telecast that King is depicting God versus Satan in Christian terms. There is no ambiguity, no alternative secular world views. The story resonates with Biblical themes, the self sacrifice of some, the cleansing in the wilderness that Mother Abigail goes through when she realizes her pride has gotten in the way of her faith, a man who was last among the survivors becomes first. All of these story elements resonate with the power of archetypal themes. The story is classic.”
That’s the one I was talking about.
Carrie is not on here? No even for nostalgic purposes? That is what started it all.
Pet Sematary really creeped me out. What a disturbing movie that was.
The Shawshank Redemption was turgid - plodding ... too long. It picked up towards the end and ended good though.
When I finished reading Pet Cemetery I threw the book across the room, I was freaked out. It was the only book that really got to me. The one that I have read over and really like is the Stand and the movie wasn't bad.
I would possibly agree with that.
I saw Shawshank for the first time ever just a few months ago.
I will watch it again to be sure, although I did not feel bored while watching it as I did when I watched “Master and Commander”, quite possibly the most boring and obnoxious movie that I have ever seen.
For me it’s The Shining hands down, but in fairness I don’t think I’ve seen many of the others. The Shining has acting performances that are top notch, as well as other elements that make this movie one for the ages.
As far as the other elements of The Shining:
1. Set design - the hotel itself really qualifies as a key character in the movie.
2. Casting - Besides Nicholson and Duvall the supporting cast is incredibly strong.
3. Writing - Great screenplay adaptation and apparently a lot of effort was devoted to this.
4. Camera work - ‘nuff said.
5. Sound and music - probably quite overlooked.
I’m with you on M&C .... kept asking myself when the action will start ....
