What would two dozen servers from across the country tell you if they could get away with it? Well, for starters, when to go out, what not to order, what really happens behind the kitchen’s swinging doors, and what they think of you and your tips. Here, from a group that clears a median $8.01 an hour in wages and tips, a few revelations that aren’t on any menu.

“Tip #21 - That hot 19 year old blond who smiles at you and rubs your back when you come in, probably doesn’t really like you. ;)”

Married men understand that. :)

20. If you walk out with the slip you wrote the tip on and leave behind the blank one, the server gets nothing. It happens all the time, especially with people who’ve had a few bottles of wine.

I did this a couple of years ago. Fortunately, we were talking to the hostess, thus giving the waiter time to find us. And, no, I did not have anyting to drink; it was an honest mistake.

I realize this doesn’t have much to do with the article, but I have been furious lately at how many restaurants have automatically added the gratuity onto our bill. We are a FAMILY of 8, 2 adults 6 kids. It makes me furious, as a former waitress we only did this on business groups, large groups of kids etc. Not families.
Having lots of little children my husband always tips well. My children are super well behaved and don’t “trash” the place. They know they will never be eating out again if there is a problem. Honestly, by adding the gratuity on the waiters are hurting themselves in our case, my husband would have tipped more. I know that we don’t have to pay the gratuity they added but I am surprised at how many places do it now on families.

Some waitresses are very patient and accommodating to the public/blonds. Frankly, sometimes, I don't know how they keep their cool.

Some of the best credits I've seen:

Muppet Movie - after the credits, a grouchy Muppet says: ‘GO HOME! GO HOME!’

Iron Man - Samuel Jackson sets up the premise for a sequel.

Credits are a must!

Rubbish!!! I do not care what the name of the person serving me, nor do I appreciate them trying to intrude into a private setting. I am in the restaurant to enjoy time with my party, not with some total stranger.

I expect them to act like professionals and do a prompt, efficient job and respect our privacy. For that I am happy to treat them with respect and tip an appropriate amount.

“Then don't order the freaking Cobb Salad. You know it has avocado. Get something else.”

BUZZZ. Wrong answer!

I have an egg allergy - if I do not tell my waitperson to hold the mayo, I will get a burger with mayo. I HATE mustard, it makes me gag - am I supposed to not order a burger because of that, too?

Wait staff need to do their job. Their job is to TAKE ORDERS and see that the food is delivered as ordered.

I tip them well when they do their job professionally.

You need to stop eating at fast food restaurants, which in my experience are the only places that dictate the condiments that go on the burger. In most real restaurants, where people sit at a table and order off a menu presented by waitstaff, burgers do not come preloaded with mustard, mayo, or ketchup. If they do and you find that objectionable, then find someplace else to eat.

Wait staff need to do their job. Their job is to TAKE ORDERS and see that the food is delivered as ordered.

No, their job is take orders FROM THE MENU and see that the food is delivered as ordered. They are not required to reinvent the menu to accommodate every taste, desire, and food allegy.

I’ll order what I want and sometimes that requires a special order. My experience from traveling nearly constantly for the past 15 years is that 10 seconds and a couple of lines makes things go far easier .... and I get what I want.

If you want to allow a predefined menu limit you to specific dishes, then fine. I prefer to ask and see if they are willing to make small changes to my satisfaction.

Then by all means, if you do not desire to engage in courteous conversation with the wait staff, then do so. However, I suspect and my experience has shown that you will not receive the same level of service you would have otherwise.

I am an Esthetician-If my clients pay with credit card or check it goes into the computer. If they pay a cash tip our boss does not know (she makes sure of that). Cash tips are never discussed at our job with our boss.

Well, I don’t know what an Esthetician does, but the discussion is about wait staff, and what I stated is how the IRS sees it.

This is pure BS.

I have worked in restaurants from the age of 12 (family business) and have managed multiple restaurants and bars.

Wait staff takes orders for food - the menu is a starting point.

Have you never eaten in a restaurant that does not have a menu? They ask you what you would like and you tell them.

I have fired many wait staff who refuse to comply with the wishes of the customer. Make the customer happy and they come back. I never allow staff to run-off my customers.

NEVER, EVER tell me I can't modify what's on the menu to suit my tastes and needs.

Don't tell another poster not to order a Cobb salad because you don't think they should ask the restaurant to 'hold the avocado.' If the business does not acquiesce to the request - another restaurant will gladly do it and have a new, happy customer.

BTW, I do not eat fast food - ever order a burger in Canada?

I agree completely. The best wait staff are the ones who are there only when you need them.

I think you can blame that on the IRS and the scads of thoughtless people who don’t tip or tip poorly.
Before the IRS changed the tip law, good or bad tips were just a fact of life as a server and generally if you were good you made money. Afterwards, a bad tip or being stiffed would affect you come tax time which really really sucks especially since usually your wages were a pittance.

I was reading a snowbird newsletter (snowbirds being the Canadians and northerners that come to our desert resort areas for the winter), trying to remind Canadians about tipping.

It threw in a little riddle: "What's the difference between a Canadian and a canoe?"

.

.

.

"Canoes tip....."

Things I know about restaurants:

1. Every restaurant I’ve worked in soaks their salad greens in some kind of chemical stuff to make them last longer and not go brown. That always creeped me out.

2. You’d think a restaurant, in the business of food, would make most of their food from scratch. That’s not true. They buy many if not most of their items from restaurant supply companies and much of what you’re eating is just another brand of processed food. Sad really.
