Kelly to be new Irish coach
ESPN ^ | 12.10.09

Notre Dame has settled on Brian Kelly as the man who can restore its faded glory, just as he turned Cincinnati into a national title contender.

Just 10 days after Charlie Weis was fired, it's up to Kelly to revive the fortunes of a team that just completed the worst decade of football in the history of the storied program with a 70-52 record and three losing seasons.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported Kelly would take over in South Bend.

Something is really wrong at ND. I've been following college football for a long time. ND has nearly unlimited money. They have there own broadcast TV network, NBC. They get BCS games they don't deserve which brings in huge amounts of money. The got slaughtered by Oregon State, Ohio State, and LSU in BCS bowl games that they never should have been invited to in the first place. They lost 8 straight bowl games-not because they didn't deserve to be in a bowl game but because they were getting BCS or other high ranking bowl games they didn't deserve.

They get special treatment from the NCAA and the Sports Media. This is outrageous and I think something ought to be done about it.

Even with all the problems at ND, they get a top ten recruiting class EVERY YEAR and they still are under performing. How do you go 6-6 with all that talent? They've been through 3 coaches now.

Anyone got any thoughts on what's wrong at the Golden Dome?

At Notre Dame you have an institution drenched in narcissism. They don't really believe they need a coach at all. Any damn fool off the street will become the next Ara Parseghian, just by virtue of the shadow of the golden era of the late 1940's. Plus, with their radio network, every senile union thug in the midwest thinks ND is still a national contender, even though they haven't done squat in 20 years.

As I've said before, ND is a marketing monster, but the pencilnecks in marketing don't get the job done on the field.

I suspect they will join the Big Ten to make 12 teams in the conference. Their “independent” strategy isn't working.

“Inviting Obama did it for me”

It’s traditional. I just watched Reagan’s Notre Dame speech on you tube. GREAT!

The real story here is that the coach of an undefeated team (Cinci), which is prepping for a major bowl game with national championship implications, just UP AND LEAVES??? WTF

Sums it up well. Notre Dame is the most overrated university in the history of civilization.

There is zero chance of ND ever joining the Big Ten.

Thats a fact jak

Past May .. The magic Negro gives commencement speech, ND gives the community activist an honorary doctorate

ND has NOT stood for much of anything in decades. Just another academic pile of Bravo Sierra.

It's arrogance, pure arrogance at Notre Dame. They lost their way under Fr. Monk Malloy and Fr. William Beauchamp more than 15 years ago. Gave up the football franchise and began to worship money and political correctness instead. An alumni uprising at the end of Willingham's tenure led to his firing and a coaching search. The uniiversity has no real desire to win at the highest levels or they would put all that money where their mouth is and hire a great coach. Kelly is a good coach, unproven at the highest levels. We'll see. In the meantime, Notre Dame has become a greedy place, preaching all sorts of platitudes and not necessarily walking the walk.

I can cite countless examples, but I'll spare you all unless you really want to know.

I love the old Notre Dame I went to and struggle mightily with what she has become. I pray she'll abandon some of the nonsense she embraced under Malloy, but do not believe Fr. Jenkins, the new president, is a good leader as evidenced by the Obama matter. You are welcome to invite the leader of the free world to come speak at the commencement exercise, but please don't honor him with a degree.

Go Irish

They would bring down the competition in the Big Ten, which is not great as of late and I am speaking as a Big Ten (football only) fan.

Colin Coward, of ESPN Radio, was working for a Portland (OR) radio station when ND played Oregon State in the Fiesta Bowl several years ago. He said that when the two teams ran on the field to warm up, he called his friends and told them to bet big on Oregon State. Said you could just tell that Oregon State was much bigger, faster, and stronger than ND.

That OSU team had two first round defensive ends, a couple of other NFLers on defense and T. J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson at wide receiver.

Oregon State won 40-9.

Maybe, but the next few years at ND are going to be very tough. All the great smart guys are going to go to Stanford. Great weather, great coach and much better looking women. Academics are better than ND, too.

It’s easy for him (Kelly) to leave. He’s a liberal coaching ‘ho, going to the newest bastion of liberal love.

Cincinnati was just his means to an end.

Life lesson for his players... they are the broad shoulders upon which others will climb to reach their success.
