Found my ancestor, John Hayden, rank: Archer. His captain was Lord Edward Despenser, served in 1375 in France. My records show that he died in 1408.

I didn’t know he was an Archer, nor who his Captain was, etc. Will add that to my records.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have other ancestors I can check for participation!

Hmmm Two Possibilities, both Archers serving under Lancaster.

Interesting. Sixteen matches on surname. Of them 6 had a (popular) first name that appears with my relatives. All were archers but several were “armed archers”. I presume that having arms made them better able to draw the bow. Only a handful were listed for more than one year. One had a single quarter. Another had a year and “sick”.

Nope.

I did however recently find out that my Great-grandfather on my Dad's side may have been on of those who led the mutiny on the Battleship Potemkin in 1905.

One found with my very uncommon surname:

____________________________________

(Surname), Archer

(Captain)Cobham, John Lord (Commander) Buckingham, Thomas of Woodstock, earl of 1377-1378 Exped Naval TNA E101/36/29 m3

_______________________

Thanks for the very intriguing link. I've traced my paternal gfather back to Scotland to the 1550's, and he came from Irleand. Not sure how this English soldier fits in, if at all. But I'm sure he was supremely skilled archer nonetheless!

Interesting wiki article on Commander of the Archer (relative?) I found:

Thomas of Woodstock, 1st Duke of Gloucester

You're assuming no illegitimate ancestors back in the old country, where the child's name wouldn't match the father's. :-))

Might be under a “Fitz,” though.

You have to assume that the name was SPELLED as it is now, my family name was spelled very different in 1278, first mention, and now.

Yepper! If it was a bastard child of Royalty in the British Isles or British territory, it would have been dubbed a “Fitz.”

Can’t recall what it is in other countries...I haven’t dug into my genealogy in a while.

This IS interesting, and thank you for posting it! But it is hardly definitive... I searched under my mother’s maiden name, pretty sure I’d find something — and nothing. Then I searched under an unusual family name that has been handed down for many years, still nothing. Searched under a common family name (William) — and got 12K entries! LOL! Many of whom had Last Name Illegible. So I think my ancestor, William Illegible, is in there somewhere.... :)
