Egypt's antiquities chief says Egypt is suspending ties with the Louvre, saying the French museum has not returned what he says are stolen artifacts.
Zahi Hawass on Wednesday said the Louvre has repeatedly ignored requests to return steles, or large reliefs, that date back to the time of the Pharaohs. Hawass said the Louvre purchased the four archeological reliefs that were stolen from a tomb in Luxor in the 1980s.
French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand said Wednesday that France is willing to return the relics if they were indeed stolen from the tomb site. He says he has asked a special commission to meet Friday to discuss the situation and rule on the matter.
Egypt has launched an extensive campaign to recover its antiquities abroad, including some objects currently exhibited in well-known museums.
In 2002, Egypt's Supreme Council ruled that all international museums must return antiquities that were stolen or smuggled from Egypt, including pieces that were purchased by museums but were ultimately proved to be stolen.

Should be serial numbers stamped on the artifacts during the production run...just trace it.
Worst part of going to the King Tut’s Treasures exhibit a few months ago was his commentary. That aside, it was something we are very glad we took the kids to see.
I saw that in Chicago, Field Museum, day after Christmas a couple years ago. Absolutely loved it. It was like trying to leave an arena after the game, the people were packed so tight. I don’t remember Zowie’s talking, but I was sick and medded up a bit. Thought they did a great job with it overall, particularly considering that this tour didn’t reproduce the exhibition that came through in the 1970s.

It was a tough choice. They had King Tut and the Chinese terracotta army in Atlanta at the same time. We really couldn’t go to both. I probably would have chosen the Chinese, but the kids understood the Egyptian stuff more from what they saw on TV. That and you remember seeing that much gold.
Ask them for Dearborn, Michigan back while you are at it.
Tut is really great. I was fortunate enough to see it in the Cairo Museum. 10 or 15 times. Couldn’t get enough really.
Also, the Louvre has some Egyptian knapped ceremonial (looked like chert) knives that are absolutely fantastic.
Seems like they said they were used to cut imbilical cords.

Don't laugh, they've already done such a thing. The Muslims are the ones who trashed the pyramids and removed the polished tiles to adorn their Mosques.
Please don’t mention the Library at Alexandria. I cried when I first heard about it in high school, and it still makes me tear up to think of what was lost forever.

Went to see the Monet water lillies exhibit a few weeks ago. I wish I could’ve seen this much when I was a kid. I can’t believe the number of people we know that live less than an hour from Atlanta and don’t take their kids to see squat.
I’m not much of a fan of the Impressionists, but (like all painting) the original works are much more, uh, impressive in person. :’)
