So. She’s a dog.
Real humor is based on fact.........that has been lost.
“Who would get a Chevy Chase joke in the style of ‘Generalissimo Franco is still dead’ joke today?”
That’s your example of an intelligent joke? It’s pretty basic. Not exactly Shakespearian.
All you have to know to know it’s funny is that once dead (longer than a certain amount of time, and barring the possibility that they’ve been frozen), people stay dead. As for the Franco part, frat boys must known at least one world leader. If not Chavez, then Ahmadinejad or Kim Jong Il.
“If not Chavez, then Ahmadinejad or Kim Jong Il.”
Granting, of course, that these men would have died before the joke was cracked. For the joke to be made today, frat boys could come up with men like Hussein.
Aykroyd had a great Dole. I liked Norm McDonald’s, too. But Norm’s always had a little bit of anti-humor in him; his was sort of a non-impression impression. Not to the extent that Chevy Chase and Will Ferrell didn’t bother to copy Ford and Bush’s manerisms, respectively. But certainly, Aykroyd’s impression was by far more accurate and human than Norm’s.
You misunderstood - I doubt anyone now a days would know who world leaders are like in the 70s people knew who Franco was. It was not a comment on how funny the joke was but on the tastes of the audiences of today.
My brother just started college - he and his buddies - good students - don't know who any of these people are nor will they remember who they are after I tell them for very long. So I disagree.
You are correct - Norm McDonald is sort of an anti-humor comedian but I recall an SNL sketch were Norm’s Dole joins an MTV reality show and looks like he will freak out listening to the gay young adults talk about their sex lives while he is in his bed. I can’t remember details beyond that face Norm made.
“I recall an SNL sketch were Norms Dole joins an MTV reality show and looks like he will freak out listening to the gay young adults talk about their sex lives while he is in his bed.”
I vaguely recall something along those lines; Bob Dole on “The Real World”.
Do you remember when they did the Republican primary debate back in ‘88, when Aykroyd’s Dole tore into Dana Carvey’s Bush? Said things like, “George Bush is a liar. I know it. You know it. The American people know it.” How he’s just a poor Kansas farm boy, and wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth like Bush. Then he went on and on about what he lacked growing up: electric garage-door openers, running water, etc. Hilarious.
I did not remember it until now. I also loved the Dukakis sketches - the debate one and the one where he knows he is losing and has a Playboy style night show with Willie Horton and a drunk Ted Kennedy hitting on his wife.
“I also loved the Dukakis sketches”
I can recall Lovitz as Dukakis repeatedly alluding to his Greek heritage, with references to olive oil, fetta cheese, and such. Also, when Carvey went off on one of his wacky rants, Lovitz getting big applause with the punchline, “I can’t believe I’m losing to this guy.”
Oh, and lest I forget, they had a 10 year-old play Quayle. Which was fine, because they mocked Dukakis and Bentsen plenty. Unlike now, when the best the can do with Obama is to say he’s too cool.
Here you go. Best part at 4:42...

True, we’ve seen “comedy” take a complete nosedive in the last few years as it panders to the lowest common denominator, but there is one simple truth in life: a fart is ALWAYS funny....
My favorite is the Ronald Reagan sketch where for the public he played the role of a sort of nice mild mannered guy and then when the doors were closed he was like Napoleon! Speaking different languages, etc.
Thanks Nikas. There’s some comments by Ackroyd regarding the paranormal in the “extras” section of the Ghostbusters DVD (the original one, not sure if later editions came out; the sequel sucked, maybe there’s more on that disk).
