Here We Go!!!! My kid has swine flu...

Just got back from the doctor, and my 13 year old tested positive for swine flu.

THE GOVERNMENT has issued orders to all doctors to no longer treat patients with Tamiflu unless they are bad enough to be admitted to the hospital. They don't want to run out.

Thankfully, my doc gave it to her anyway, so I am hoping I don't have to worry about her getting that bad.

So, I will be giving periodic first hand accounts of the progression of this thing so that FReepers can hear it first hand, rather than relying on the media to tell you how it is.

Her throat started feeling scratchy on Wednesday evening, but she was fine. By 12:30 today, she had a fever of 102.8. She just took her first dose of Tamiflu, which by the way cost 120.00, and that was after our discount. They won't be making any money off of this, will they??!!!!!!

While I might seem lighthearted about this, I am worried. I have two younger children, and my own health problems as well. Being spooked by the media hasn't helped.

If you don't mind, any of you so inclined please say a little prayer for my girls.

We are all now quarantined.

As quick as you can, get all your children to take a whole bunch of Vitamin D. Even better, if you can strip them down to their shorts and have them out in the sun for about 15 minutes, it will probably help a LOT. Vitamin D fights flu in half a dozen ways.

Next, give them all Cold-Eeze lozenges to suck on, not chew, and nothing to drink for a half hour afterward. They will taste ucky, but they are FDA proven to shorten duration and intensity of colds, and likely the flu. They have a unique kind of zinc in them that inhibits the virus from reproducing.

Then if you can, get pure cranberry juice and start pouring bottles of it down your sick child. The pure stuff is very bitter, and they have to drink a lot of it, but it can strongly interfere with the virus attacking their cells. The more, the merrier. Typical sweetened cranberry juice is only 26%, so you need to get the pure stuff if you can.

I don't think they have any idea what the hell they are doing. Just winging it and hoping to avoid a public panic, IMO

See, you have a fever already, otherwise you would have recognized that the adminstration does want a panic (crisis). That's why the dire predictions (90,000 deaths!).

btw....prayers for a quick recover for your little angel.

Hoping she feels better soon. A friend of mine’s daughter missed the first week of school due to the swine flu. No one else in the family got it, though.

Our local school sent home a letter this week from the Gov'na. According to school policy, if my child has a fever of 100 or higher accompanied with sore throat or cough, I have to keep her home for 7 days or until she is symptom free for 24hrs whichever is longer.

Unless we know for sure it is not the flu, e.g. doctor's statement. We have been advised to plan to make child care arrangements in the event our kids have to be out of school for this duration. If the kids become symptomatic at school, they will be isolated and sent home with a parent ASAP. Some employers have sent communications in response saying that the children cannot be brought to work if they've been banned from school due to illness. lol

Auto-immune issues will not be a problem, unless you are taking some form of immuno-suppresents (prednisone, for e.g.).

Auto-immune usually means an overactive immune system, actually.

Doc said the quarantine is mandatory.

Did he explain the quarantine? For example, if my son were sick, could my husband go to work? Sounds like no, or else what is the point of quarantine?

50% of the cases do not have fever.

I am coming down with it too...called out sick today. Taking Vit D (doubled my usual 5000iu daily dose.) Also taking advil, benadryl and tagamet to fight cytokine production...so far so good but worried too - oldest daughter has asthma.

Ugh, I didn’t think I had it unless I started fevering. No fever, but achey, sore throat, that tickle in the chest/throat that precedes a cough... and w.e.a.k. I keep waiting for a fever to start.

I’ve been drinking green tea, upped my D, and have the advil/benadryl (but no tagamet). And elderberry syrup. The kids HATE when I make it because it stinks up the house. LOL. Now to watch all these kids for signs.

I know freepers who have lost a loved one to the swine flu .

More people died in 1976 from the vaccination for the swine flu(20) than the flu itself(1). Hundreds more suffered various significant adverse side effects including a neurological disease. The links to the articles I provided in my previous post detail how and why the situation has been exaggerated.

DvdMom, Thanks for posting the excellent information.

I have been following this Swine Flu and I believe we could be in for one heck of a flu season.

Teeny, you and your family will be in my prayers. Maybe you will now have immunity to the virus....that is what we can hope for anyway.

Tamiflu is not that helpful, statistically.
Let us know how it goes. Prayers up.

You are in my prayers - as are your children and family and all those who came in contract with any of you.

Here's some good news. My brother's daughter got the same flu - and had it while my grandson was visiting them - Their doctor immediately started her on Tamiflu when she was diagnosed - she responded well to it and she's fine now. My grandson didn't get the flu even though he was visiting for a week. She recovered and is fine - and all are well.

As far as shortages go - I spoke with my local pharmacist when this first stated and he said all the doctors were getting their prescriptions filled - ahead of time - for themselves and their families. He only had a hard time when they were getting more than 10 prescriptions - guess he didn't think they should be that stocked up - considering none of them even had the flu by that time...

I understand both sides of the vaccination issue .

I understand that many freepers have strong opinions on the subject .

I try to post as many swineflu articles as I can & let the reader decide .

I have seen freeper flame words on the matter on other swine flu threads .

I don’t state an opinion & I mainly just post as many swine flu articles as I can on the below linked freeper thread

I post articles from both sides ( pro & anti )

Also we’ve been posting ongoing swineflu articles here

Well I don't know if is was the Tamiflu or the echinacea/goldenseal/colloidal silver/vitamin concoction, but she actually feels a bit better!

We'll see what the morning brings.

Her school nurse, her band teacher, AND the prinicipal all called this evening to check on her. Apparently she was the first confirmed case, and they are all freaking out.
