If the GOP was smart, they would go with someone like Governor Linda Lingle (R), of Hawaii to challenge Obama in 2012.
She's one tough lady. She's really smart, very level-headed, pro-business, fiscally conservative, and yet she supports women's issues, and she's also a social moderate. George W. Bush LOVED her.
Interestingly, she's also Jewish (from Missouri), and was married, although now she's divorced.
She would please conservatives AND moderate Republicans, plus she's got the Jewish vote and I know she would appeal to minorities, since she totally understands and relates to minorities, having presided over one of the most diverse states in the nation.
Wouldn't that be something? A Democratic candidate from Hawaii with Kansas roots, and a Republican candidate from Hawaii with Missouri roots, facing off to be President of the United States.
I'd love to see that matchup.

If the GOP is going to save itself, it will be by focusing on the policies, not the personalities. And Gov. Palin has no lock on true conservative policies.

By "woman's issues" you mean abortion I don't know why you choose to use a euphemism, I'm fine with the fact that some Republicans support legal abortion. But nominating a Presidential candidate that is not pro-life would be a disaster and tear the party apart. Lingle is allegedly against partial-birth and for parental notification. But still, an appreciable % (call it 5, 10, 15, beats me) of the Republican vote for President is single-issue pro-life.
And she's not conservative on other issues as well. She's a member of the RINO "Main Street Partnership". There seem to be a few members who I believe are pretty conservative, but also all the super-RINOs are in it.
I'd like to her to run for the Senate though against one of the Hawaii fossils.
Suggesting her for President and saying she would please conservatives is as silly as movie reviewers who really really liked the movie "National Treasure".
At this point in the 2000 campaign cycle, hardly anyone was talking about GWB for POTUS.
At this point in the 2008 cycle, no one seriously gave Obama a chance and Hillary! was the presumptive nominee.
Are there other conservatives I like? Sure. But to try to measure their 'viability' based on fundraising or crowd appeal vs. Gov. Palin for the 2012 race as we sit here in 2009 is rather foolhardy.

First, Ryan has been the party's spokesperson on economics in a number of national forums.
Second, you are pushing a nominee that almost no one even in the GOP was aware of until mid-2008. Most of those in the base outside Alaska who had heard of her had only heard of her because of her laudable handling of Trig's birth. Yet you say that Ryan is a non-starter because not enough GOPers have heard of him on this day, over three years and three months before election day.
We need to keep our options open. The penalty for screwing this up is four more years of Emperor Zero.
You know what would be really cool? It would be cool if we run a conservative candidate in 2012 who isn't Palin, and he or she loses by a percentage point or two because people like you stayed home to show us how much you value Sarah. Yeah, keeping a conservative out of the White House is the smart conservative play, right?
I'm for running a conservative nominee. I hope it's Palin but I will support anyone who wins the nomination who is not a RINO. And anyone else who isn't willing to do that is as much a part of the problem as Juan McCain and Miguel Huckabee.

As others have noted on thread, she's pro-choice on abortion. While she's not as bad as a liberal nut like Mark Kirk on the issue, it's far from the only issue she's wrong on. She wants to make the EPA a cabinet level position and she believes the death penalty should be abolished nationwide because it's "racist" and because "innocent" people have been convicted (never understood how someone can justify killing the unborn but not convicted murderers). Not surprisingly, she's also a very "gay friendly" Governor, though she's been noncommittal and mute on whether she'll sign a bill that would legalize gay marriage. (The Log Cabin RINO did note "In Hawaii, Linda Lingle made history in the Aloha state by being both the first Republican and the first female governor in Hawaii history. Lingle's victory came after she made strong public overtures to gay voters as Hawaii state GOP chair, including inviting Log Cabin Hawaii leader Jeff Bingham Mead to address the Hawaii Republican Party convention." ) And John Fund reported to Club for Growth that she's been a total RINO on fiscal issues:

Sounds to me like she'd be a non-starter with any sane conservative.Quite frankly I'm surprised this thread hasn't been pulled yet. We clearly have a case of someone who signed up today for the sole purpose of posting a vanity promoting a candidate who is hostile to conservative issues. Looks like another hit-and-run job to me, and I'm pretty sure that goes against FR posting rules.
As for Lingle being a candidate to take out one of Hawaii's ancient senators (I call them Daniel K. & Daniel K. 2 because both have the same first name and middle initial) , she'd be tolerable but is far from ideal. I think she'd be another Lisa Murkowski in the Senate. That would be an improvement over what we currently get from Hawaii, but still very disappointing. I'd hold my nose for her but it's a shame we don't have someone better who would be a viable Senate candidate (and much of the blame can to go Lingle herself for failing to grow the Hawaii GOP and groom better candidates). However she's term limited in 2010 so I suppose she's going nothing better to do than to run for legislative office.
Hopefully Lt. Governor Duke Aiona succeeds her as Governor in 2010 and is an improvement. I heard he is more conservative and considered part of the "Christian right" since he is a devout Roman Catholic and had a strong pro-family track record as judge.
Do you really believe she is the "only true conservative"? Really? Or are you just being belligerent for no good reason?
