Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

The Frugal Roundup

How to Brew Your Own Beer and Maybe Save Some Money. A fantastic introduction to home brewing, something I’ve never done myself, but always been interested in trying. (@Generation X Finance)

Contentment: A Great Financial Principle. If I had to name one required emotion for living a frugal lifestyle it would be contentment. Once you are content with your belongings and your lot in life you can ignore forces attempting to separate you from your money. (@Personal Finance by the Book)

Use Energy Star Appliances to Save On Utility Costs. I enjoyed this post because it included actual numbers, and actual total savings, from someone who upgraded to new, energy star appliances. (@The Digerati Life)

Over-Saving for Retirement? Is it possible to “over-save” for retirement? Yes, I think so. At some point I like the idea of putting some money aside in taxable investments outside of retirement funds, to be accessed prior to traditional retirement age. (@The Simple Dollar)

40 Things to Teach My Kids Before They Leave Home. A great list of both practical and philosophical lessons to teach your kids before they reach the age where they know everything. I think that now happens around 13 years-old. (@My Supercharged Life)

Index Fund Investing Overview. If you are looking for a place to invest with high diversification and relatively low fees (for broader index funds with low turnover), index funds are a great place to start. (@Money Smart Life)

5 Reasons To Line Dry Your Laundry. My wife and I may soon be installing a clothesline in our backyard. In many neighborhoods they are frowned upon - one of the reasons I don’t like living in a neighborhood. I digress. One of our neighbors recently put up a clothesline, and we might just follow his lead. (@Simple Mom)

Essential Oils

Essential oils, known as nature’s living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs.

While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vast—which makes them much more than something that simply smells good.

Historically, essential oils have played a prominent role in everyday life. With more than 200 references to aromatics, incense, and ointments throughout the Bible, essential oils are said to be used for anointing and healing the sick. Today, essential oils are used for aromatherapy, massage therapy, emotional health, personal care, nutritional supplements, household solutions, and much more.

Young Living Essential Oils, the leading provider of essential oils, offers more than 300 essential oil singles and blends. All Young Living essential oils meet the YLTG standard. This means that every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. Only YLTG essential oils should be used for the primary methods of application, which include inhalation and application.

>>>I hear more people talking about preparation than I have in my life.<<<

Boy, you sure got that right!

The subject came up at the beginning of one of our talk shows here locally, and hours later, despite the repeated attempts by the host to change the subject, everyone kept their lines full with questions and comments on gardening, preserving and other preparedness topics.

I wonder how much of the sales today are people preparing - I know that we spend much less on consumables and more and more on prep items, like the commercial dehydrator and meat slicer I just bought, and the storage supplies, and less and less of the things that we used to buy.

Even without my pushing, daughter and SIL decided that for the first time, they are planting a garden - canning and dehydrating too. Don’t know if it means anything, but he says EVERYONE he works with is preparing (Nat’l. Guard - State EOC) Hmmmmm

While even now I have almost a year’s worth on hand, I am kicking it up a notch and starting dehydrating lots more to add to the normal canning and freezing I normally do.

Group struggles to implement urban agriculture in Lantzville, BC.

Council has placed themselves and the residents of Lantzville on a very tight timeline
to deal with the issue of urban agriculture. Since neither council nor staff have
the required expertise in this area, and we want a “made in Lantzville solution”,
as council had initially proposed, I recommend we ask council to delay pushing through
this bylaw until concerns of all parties can be adequately addressed.

Pregnant teen mums protest closure of Detroit High School that teaches them how
to become urban farmers

DETROIT - In an interview with VOD, Ashley Matthews, 17, described the heroic student-led
occupation of her school, Catherine Ferguson Academy on April 15. She spoke of the
wholehearted support the young mothers received from the community, as well as the
vicious physical and verbal brutality police visited on them during their arrests.

Author David Tracey says urban agriculture will force us to rethink the design of
the modern city

Imagine Vancouver in the not-too distant future. There are food gardens everywhere.

Mini-farms. On rooftops. In parks. Next to gas stations. Filling empty lots.

And there are fruit and vegetable kiosks dotted here and there, selling fresh, organically
grown produce that has been picked only a few hours earlier.

Urban Agriculture in Estonia

“Edible City 1” is the first publication to introduce city agriculture into re-independent
Estonia. It is based on a popular science test run by Linnalabor (Urban Lab) in
2008 where we measured the quantity of pollution in edible plants growing next to
major roads. The experiment provided an opportunity to concentrate on the broad
field of city gardening and to introduce it at public events and in the media.

I hope more cities open up vacant, unowned land to agriculture. It seems a shame to waste perfectly good space.

Coumadin (warfarin sodium) Crystalline 5 mg Tablets: Recall - Tablets May Have Higher than Expected Potency

AUDIENCE: Cardiology, Pharmacy, Patients

ISSUE: Bristol-Myers Squibb initiated a voluntary recall of one lot of 1,000-count bottles of Coumadin (warfarin sodium) Crystalline 5 mg tablets. Company testing of tablets from a returned bottle found a tablet to be higher in potency than expected. The lot number affected in the U.S. is 9H49374A with an expiry date of September 30, 2012. A decrease of active ingredient may increase the risk of clots which could lead to heart attack or stroke, and if there is too much active ingredient, there is an increased risk of bleeding.

BACKGROUND: Coumadin is prescribed to treat or prevent blood clots.

RECOMMENDATION: Patients who may have 5 mg tablets should not interrupt their therapy but should seek advice from their pharmacist to see if they have tablets originating from the affected lot and if so, should consult their physician for appropriate medical advice.

Prince Charles visits DC farm, Supreme Court

The Prince of Wales spent about 35 minutes touring Common Good City Farm on Capitol
Hill. Wearing a gray, double-breasted suit on a muggy, windy day, he shook hands
and made small talk with farm staffers, volunteers and dozens of onlookers who
crammed against a picket fence.

He did not speak to reporters or address the crowd, but he chatted up children about
composting and the members of a jazz band about their equipment. A longtime advocate
of sustainable agriculture, Charles picked up a piece of spinach grown at the farm
and popped it into his mouth.

Documentary project provides children with gardening supplies and cameras

Kids are building gardens, sharing stories, inspiring friends and family to change
the way we relate to our food, to our community and ultimately, to our planet.

Our unique documentary project provides children with gardening supplies and cameras,
and allows them to share the story as they learn to compost, plant seeds and ultimately
harvest food they’ve grown themselves.

Molly Rockamann on Organic Farming and Sustainable Urban Agriculture
One of the things that’s so different about kids is that they have this unbridled
enthusiasm for it. I think kids, if they haven’t been told that they shouldn’t get
dirty too much in their lives, they’re happy to get dirty. Kids are just into it
right away.

Profitable Urban Farming in Vancouver

Chris Thoreau is currently finishing his undergraduate degree in Agroecology at
UBC. His focus has been on soils, urban farming, and plant breeding. Currently working
on expanding the viability of urban farming as a business, he hopes to unite these
three areas of study to help ensure the sustainability of urban food production.

10,000 Internet Farmers wanted to run a real farm - This is NOT Farmville

The National Trust is asking the public to help run a real-life working farm via
the web.

In return for a £30 annual subscription, 10,000 people will take control of the
farm on the Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire.

Have your say on big decisions
Because Wimpole is a real farm, the decisions that have to be made are real, and
they have real consequences. But, as in life and in any other business, there is
no one right answer in farming, and we need some fresh ideas - yours! The first
vote will be a big one: what should we grow on the farm?

Rooftop urban farming in Denmark

The efforts of the unsung heros of the decentralized urban agriculture movement
in Copenhagen are now starting to be recognized outside of their usual circles.

For example, on April 29th, 2011 Politiken published a feature article on DYRK,
an urban farming initiative in Nørrebro, titled “Urbane landmænd planter grønne
chok i København”

EYA’s unique urban agriculture work experience program in Vancouver

A landmark internship has just drawn to a close, with ten local youth completing
a unique urban agriculture work experience program. This program offered the opportunity
for hands-on learning in the budding field of urban agriculture - and get paid for
it! For the youth in the program this opportunity was not only a unique chance to
delve into organizations making a difference in the community, but also a chance
to address their own barriers to finding fulfilling work in the future.

Urban Agriculture: Revolutionary by Nature

Although we may have a long row yet to hoe on the matter, urban agriculture has
really started to take root in just a few short years as quite a few cities have
passed legislation that make it a lot easier to grow food in an urban environment.

In 2009, Seattle passed a bill that allows curbside areas to be planted without
requiring a permit. Hardscaping - using rocks or raised beds - still requires permission,
but not a fee.

Highly contagious mystery virus with AIDS-like symptoms quickly spreading
throughout China

(NaturalNews) A new mystery virus with symptoms similar to those of AIDS and
HIV is turning up all over China, according to a recent report in The Epoch
Times. Patients with the highly transmissible disease are experiencing
dramatic weight loss, night sweats, numb limbs, severe body aches, joint
problems, severe vomiting, and the obvious decrease in white blood cell
count and subsequent deterioration of the immune system.

A translated report from the Chinese news source New Express Daily explains
that people who contract the new AIDS-like
http://www.naturalnews.com/virus.html
virus — which spreads through any
bodily fluid, including saliva and sweat, by the way — experience nearly
all the same symptoms as AIDS http://www.naturalnews.com/patients.html
patients do, but routinely test negative for the
http://www.naturalnews.com/disease.html
disease. And experts are allegedly
unable to authoritatively identify the disease, or the source from which it
came.

A reporter from New Express Daily recently interviewed 30 different patients
with the disease, most of which were believed to have contracted it through
sexual contact. But several of them contracted it from other sources,
including one via a
http://www.naturalnews.com/blood.html
blood
transfusion from a relative, and another from a friend at a casual house
gathering. And their accounts are chilling.

“I thought it was just a cold at the time, so I still participated in all
kinds of gatherings,” explained a retired army officer with the disease to
The Epoch Times. “Consequently, over 100 of my comrades in the army,
relatives and friends were infected by me.”

Reports say that the
http://www.naturalnews.com/Chinese.html
Chinese
Health Ministry has ordered epidemiological studies in six provinces with
high numbers of infected patients, including in Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang,
Hunan, Jiangsu, and Guangdong. To date, though, there have been no
conclusive discoveries made concerning the cause or source of the disease.

NEWS from CPSC
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
Office of Information and Public Affairs
Washington, DC 20207

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 6, 2011
Release #11-218

CPSC Hotline: (800) 638-2772
CPSC Media Contact: (301) 504-7908

CPSC Alert: Consumers Urged To Stop Using phil&teds USA Clip-on Chairs Due To Serious Dangers Posed To Children

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns consumers that some “metoo” clip-on table top chairs, imported by phil&teds USA Inc., of Fort Collins, Colo. put young children at risk of serious injury due to multiple safety hazards. CPSC is urging consumers to stop using some metoo clip-on chairs immediately.

The product is an infant/toddler chair with a nylon fabric seat and a metal frame that clamps onto tables using two metal vise clamps. The upper part of each clamp rests on the table top and has either a rubber clamp pad on its underside or a rubber boot covering it. The chair is sold in three fabric colors - red, black and navy.

The clip-on chairs affected by this warning do not have plastic spacers between the table clamps and the front horizontal metal bar. The clip-on chairs that have plastic spacers between the table clamps and the front horizontal metal bar are under evaluation.

The company has refused to agree to a national recall of their hazardous product that is acceptable to CPSC. The company has offered a repair kit consisting of rubber boots to place on the upper clamp grips of the chairs. Consumers should be aware that CPSC has not approved a repair kit for this product, despite the firm’s prior statement that it was conducting a recall “in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.”

CPSC is urging consumers to stop using the affected metoo chairs at this time in order to prevent the risk of injury to children.

The affected metoo chairs pose serious fall and amputation hazards to children placed in them. Children can suffer impact and head injuries when the chair detaches from the table and falls with them in it. CPSC staff is aware of numerous incidents involving the affected metoo chairs.

CPSC staff has determined that the clamps can detach from a variety of different table surfaces. Additionally, the chairs can detach when children move around or use their feet to push against other objects. Staff also determined that the lack of adequate space between the horizontal metal bar at the front of the chair and the clamps can cause children’s fingers to be severely pinched, lacerated, crushed or amputated if caught between the bar and the clamp when the chair detaches.

In addition to hazards with the affected clip-on chairs, the product packaging and instructions provide conflicting information. The product’s packaging and marketing information show the product being used in ways that may lead to the chair detaching from the table. However, the product’s instructions do not adequately warn against this type of use.

Tens of thousands of the affected metoo chairs may have been distributed since May 2006 for about $50 through philandteds.com, Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Target, Toys R Us, other online retailers and a variety of independent juvenile specialty stores.

The U.S. military has long used cats in special operations under the top-secret Covert Anti-Terrorism Stealth (CATS) program. Smarter and stealthier than dogs, cats are also more agile: They can climb trees and leap across buildings to gather intelligence. Studies show they can survive nine times as long as human soldiers.
