Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

5 Homemade Foot Soak Recipes

Posted By TipNut On February 1, 2007 @ 7:08 am In Beauty & Home Spa | 4 Comments

Who doesn’t enjoy a nice, soothing foot soak? Ahhhhhh…

Recipe Directions:

Unless otherwise noted, mix together all ingredients thoroughly then store in an airtight container.

* Use 2 to 3 tablespoons per gallon of water used in soak.

Water temperature is at personal preference, but I find the hottest water my feet will comfortably tolerate gives the most relief and comfort.
Foot Soak Recipes

Recipe #1

1 part Epsom salts
1 part Baking soda
drops of choice essential oils (optional)

Chamomile Tea Foot Soak – Recipe #2

4 bags chamomile tea
1/8 cup dried parsley
4 drops essential oil of choice

* Steep ingredients in 1 gallon of hot water for 10 minutes before soaking feet.

Recipe #3

2 cups Kosher salt
1 cup Epsom salts
drops essential oil of choice (optional)

Recipe #4

1 1/4 cups Epsom salts
1 1/4 cups Kosher salt
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup cornstarch

Recipe #5

1 cup lemon juice
3 TBS olive oil
1/4 cup milk

* Mix together well in a small bowl then add to 1 gallon of water and soak feet.

Tips

Single Ingredient Ideas:

* 1 cup honey per gallon of water
* 1/2 cup Epsom salts per gallon of water
* 2 cups brewed coffee per gallon of water

Essential Oil Ideas: peppermint, lavender, lemon, orange, eucalyptus, mint

You can also add marbles to the bottom of the basin to rub your feet over while soaking, quite soothing!

When your garden is in full bloom, add as many flower petals as you like to your favorite recipe for a special, pampered experience.

5 Homemade Bath Salts & Soaks

Posted By TipNut On November 20, 2007 @ 10:32 am In Beauty & Home Spa | No Comments

Before mixing the recipes, make sure that any herbs or oatmeal added are first ground finely (use a food processor if possible). This helps keep the bath “clump free”.

Mix the ingredients well, store in airtight plastic containers or sterilized jars (such as mason jars or small & pretty jam jars). Shake the jar well before using.

You can add as little or as much as you like to the bath, anywhere from 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup should be plenty.

Cinnamon Soak

1 cup powdered milk
1 cup baking soda
3 TBS cornstarch
2 TBS cream of tartar
1 1/2 TBS cinnamon

Soothing Bath Soak

4 cups Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup sea salt
2 TBS dried herbs (finely ground)

Herbal Milk Bath

2 cups powdered milk
1 cup cornstarch
2 TBS dried herbs (finely ground)

Oatmeal & Cinnamon Milk Soak

1 1/2 cups powdered milk
3/4 cup baking soda
3/4 cup oatmeal (finely grind it first)
3 TBS cornstarch
2 tsp cream of tartar
2 tsp cinnamon

Herbal Salts

1 1/2 cups Epsom salts
3/4 cup baking soda
3/4 cup dried herbs (finely ground)

You could also use any of the recipes found on the herbal bath bag recipes [1] page, but since the ingredients would be loose in the bath instead of in a bag, make sure that you grind up the herbs and oatmeal first so they’re fine in texture.
Tips For Making Bath Salts & Soaks

* If you like fragrant bath soaks, try mixing in a few drops of your essential oils or perfumes. I wouldn’t do this with bath soaks that contain dried herbs or spices already.
* For pretty colors, try adding a few drops of food coloring then shaking the jar really well. Don’t add too much though in case your bath tub gets stained.
* Bath salts and soaks make great gifts in a jar, decorate the lids and jars, maybe add a few bath beads. For a nice touch include the recipe too so the recipient can make some more if they like.
* For more home spa treats, try Herbal Bath Bags [1], Shower Spa Bags [2] and the delightful homemade foot soaks [3].

Chocolate Raspberry Spread

Chocolate Raspberry Spread

5 cups prepared fruit (buy about 2 quarts fully ripe red raspberries)
1 box powdered fruit pectin
5 squares unsweetened baking chocolate, coarsely chopped
1/2 tsp butter (optional)
7 cups sugar, measured into separate bowl

Bring boiling water canner, half full with water, to simmer. Wash jars and
screw bands in hot soapy water; rinse with warm water. Pour boiling water
over flat lids in saucepan off the heat. Let stand in hot water until ready
to use. Drain well before filling.

Crush raspberries thoroughly, one layer at a time. (Press half of the pulp
through a sieve to remove some of the seeds, if desired.) Measure exactly 5
cups prepared fruit into 6 or 8 quart saucepot.

Stir pectin into prepared fruit in saucepot. Add chocolate; mix well. Add
butter to reduce foaming, if desired. Bring mixture to full rolling boil (a
boil that doesn’t stop bubbling when stirred) on high heat, stirring
constantly. Stir in sugar. Return to full rolling boil and boil exactly 1
minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Skim off any foam with metal
spoon.

Ladle immediately into prepared jars, filling to within 1/4 inch of tops.
Process 10 minutes in a boiling water bath. Adjust time according to your
altitude.

Makes: About 10 half pints

Here is where I found this.

[Joya, did you search this site?]

Low-Sugar and Whole Wheat Ranger Cookies with Pecans, Coconut, and Chocolate
(Makes 12 cookies but recipe could easily be doubled because these cookies freeze well; recipe adapted slightly from The South Beach Diet Parties and Holidays Cookbook.)

1/4 cup pecan halves or pieces
1/4 cup bran cereal (I used Fiber One, which has no added sugar)
1/4 cup rolled oats (I used Bob’s Red Mill Extra Thick Rolled Oats)
1/4 cup unsweetened coconut
1/4 cup semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate chips (the recipe called for bittersweet, but I only had semi-sweet)
1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup trans-fat free margarine or butter (Use margarine for the South Beach Diet; I used Smart Balance)
1/4 cup Splenda or sugar (Use Splenda for the South Beach Diet)
1 egg
1 T vanilla

Preheat oven to 375F/190C. Put pecans on a small baking sheet and toast in the oven for about 6 minutes, or until they are becoming fragrant and lightly toasted. Let pecans cool for 2-3 minutes.

While pecans are toasting add bran cereal, rolled oats, unsweetened coconut, and chocolate chips to food processor. Add pecans as soon as they are cool, then process until the mixture is coarsely ground. (It took about a minute for me to get the chocolate chips ground.)

In a small bowl, combine whole wheat pastry flour, baking powder, and salt. In a larger bowl, use a hand beater on high speed to cream together the margarine (or butter), Splenda (or sugar) egg, and vanilla. Add the flour mixture and use a low speed to mix until all ingredients are combined. Remove beaters and use a spoon or rubber scraper to mix in the oatmeal-pecan mixture, stirring until it’s well blended into the batter.

Spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray. Use a tablespoon to scoop out heaping spoonfuls of batter and place them 2 inches apart. (Original recipe said 16 cookies, but I only got 12.)

Bake cookies 16-20 minutes, or until the bottom is golden and the top of the cookies feel dry. (Cookies in the photo were baked for 18 minutes.) Let cool 20-30 minutes. These cookies freeze well.

Printer Friendly Recipe

South Beach Suggestions:
These cookies (made with Splenda and margarine) would be approved for phase 2 or 3 of the South Beach Diet. Bittersweet chocolate chips would be the best choice for South Beach, but the semi-sweet chocolate chips I used only had 8 grams of sugar in 30 chips, so if that’s all you had these would still be pretty low sugar cookies.

The dripless tomato arrives

After bringing the world the cherry tomato, a virus-resistant tomato and the long-life tomato, Israel adds a new star to the red fruit’s lineup - a tomato that doesn’t drip.

(By Avigayil Kadesh)

Now making its international debut - the dripless tomato, Israel’s newest variety of tomato
Now making its international debut - the dripless tomato, Israel’s newest variety of tomato

No more tomato juice dribbling down your chin or making your salads soggy: Israel’s new dripless tomato, the Admoniya is ready for market. Starring at the October 13-28 Tomato Festival at Tel Aviv’s Hilton Hotel, some 400 kilograms (882 pounds) of the fruit were brought to the Hilton’s chefs from the RT Fresh farm of Moshav Tekuma in the western Negev.

As the new variety makes it domestic debut, it is also taking its first bows on the European stage. Exports of the tomato, branded ‘Intense’ for the overseas market, began last month. Packed six to a package, about 500 tons of Intense fresh tomatoes are expected to be shipped by next spring to several European countries via Holland.

“You can cut them however you want and the liquid will stay inside the fruit,” says RT marketing director Avishai Trabelsi. “You can put these tomatoes in a sandwich and eat it a few days later and they will taste fresh and the bread will not be soggy. They’re also great for salads.”

You can hold an Intense tomato and bite into it just like you do an apple and they won’t drip. They also retain their shape after slicing - a boon for caterers who use tomato slices to garnish their dishes.

The legendary Israeli tomato expertise

Israeli tomato expertise has become legendary worldwide. The cherry tomato was developed in Israel in 1973, and it was here that Israeli seed breeder Hazera Genetics launched the first tomato strain with immunity to a devastating virus, in 2004. Hazera had another breakthrough last summer, when it introduced Antonella, a tomato that retains its firmness, flavor, and aroma even after a week at room temperature.

Trabelsi’s father Rami, who owns RT, grows the new variety of tomato in hothouses from Dutch seeds. Intense tomatoes are said to boast a shelf life that’s 40 percent longer than that of regular tomatoes and even after they’re cut, to stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to three weeks. This is because the juices stay locked in the solid part of the fruit.

The arrival of the new variety is not only welcome news for food-service professionals, schoolchildren and brown-baggers, but also for the entire Israeli consumer public that’s just starting to see the end of a temporary tomato shortage caused by an exceptionally hot summer.

In Europe, the Intense tomato joins a market where Israeli tomatoes are already in great demand for their quality and low cost during the winter months.

Israeli produce in demand abroad

From the late 1980s to the late 1990s, Israeli farmers developed and perfected new ways to grow crops under carefully controlled conditions in hothouses, rather than in open fields, using sophisticated methods for temperature regulation, irrigation, biological pest control, fertilization, sorting, and packing. They also borrowed proven techniques from other countries, such as the Dutch approach of trellising.

All of these advances have made Israeli tomatoes, as well as other produce and flowers, popular among foreign consumers. Both fresh and canned varieties are exported regularly to Europe and North America and the Asian market may soon be added to the mix.

“We expect to be shipping Intense tomatoes all year, because to make a new brand viable it must be available all the time,” says 27-year-old Avishai, whose entire family is involved in RT Fresh. To ensure adequate quantities regardless of weather conditions, RT is also subleasing space for the seedlings at nearby farms.

Trabelsi, a former high-fashion model, recently took over as marketing director for his father’s 30-year-old brand of premium tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, radishes, carrots, celery, citrus, pineapple and pomegranates. The second of five children who grew up on the 100-hectare (247-acre) farm, he is planning a trip to scout out new seed varieties in Spain, and is hoping to introduce Intense tomatoes in Canada next year.

BEST PRAYER I HAVE HEARD IN A LONG TIME

Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (”who really ought to get a job”) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day That of all the gifts you give us Lord, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity.

Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.

Working for God on earth doesn’t pay much......but His retirement plan is out of this world.

Debacle over drinking water deals a blow to CDC and EPA

By Robert McCartney
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 5, 2010; C01

When it comes to something as basic as ensuring that our drinking water
doesn’t poison our children, you’d think federal scientists and
environmentalists would hustle to give the public the fullest and most
reliable information as quickly as possible.

You’d also think the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the
Environmental Protection Agency would go out of their way to publicize it
when the government’s own research finds that the risk posed by lead in the
water nationwide is greater than previously described, and that one of the
EPA’s top recommended solutions is useless.

Honey Graham Bread
Posted by: “Marilyn”

Honey Graham Bread

2 packages active dry yeast

1/2 cup warm water, 105 to 115 degrees

2 teaspoons granulated sugar

1 1/2 cups milk, scalded and cooled

1/2 cup honey

2 teaspoons salt

1/4 cup soft or melted shortening or lard

3 cups graham or whole wheat flour

2 1/2 to 2 3/4 cups bread or unbleached all-purpose flour

In large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Add the sugar. Stir. Let stand for 5 minutes until the yeast foams. Stir in milk, honey, salt, shortening and half the graham flour. Beat until smooth. Add remaining graham flour and then stir in the bread flour, 1 cup at a time, beating after each addition until mixture will not easily absorb more flour. Let stand for 15 minutes. Turn out onto lightly floured board. Knead for 5 to 10 minutes until dough is springy and smooth. Wash bowl, grease, and add dough to the bowl. Turn over to grease top of dough. Cover. Let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Lightly oil a work surface. Turn dough out onto surface. Divide into 2 parts. Shape each into a loaf. Grease 2 (9 by 5 by 3 inch) loaf pans. Place dough into pans. Let rise until almost doubled, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes until loaves sound hollow when tapped. Remove from pans. Cool on racks.

Posted by: “ddj0195”

You could dust the tea towel with flour or use plastic wrap with a spray on oil instead of the tea towel. I find those methods rather messy, so sometimes I’ll put cans or glasses along the sides of the baking sheet and build a tent with the tea towel. I was taught that you cover the dough with a tea towel to keep flies from landing on the dough. Perhaps the practise of covering the dough is obsolete?

Jota di Base

Bean and Sauerkraut Soup

Source : Kyle Phillips, Your About.com Guide to Italian Cooking

Basic Jota, or Jota di Base: Though one might not associate sauerkraut
with Italy, it’s common in Friuli,
and is central to Jota (pronounced Yota), a simple, hearty bean and
sauerkraut soup from Trieste.

Ingredients:

A heaping cup of beans soaked in cold water for at least 6 hours
2 cloves garlic, crushed and peeled
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon minced onion (optional)
1 tablespoon flour
2 cups sauerkraut

Preparation:

Boil the beans in water with the garlic, salting them only after an hour.
When they have become soft, sauté the flour until golden in the oil with
the onion if you want it, and stir it into the beans.
Remove and discard the garlic, stir in the sauerkraut, mix, simmer for
10 more minutes, and check seasoning.

That’s it — simple peasant food.

Yield: 4-6 servings

Farming in cities could help feed the world

Imagine agriculture in small spaces, using high-tech tools such as photo-bioreactors,
generating clean products 24 hours a day, every day, regardless of external climatic
factors. Imagine that this would be free of pathogens and agrochemicals, independent
of the seasons, and with the possibility of growing genetically modified crops without
interacting with the environment or affecting existing biodiversity.

This is ‘urban biofarming’, a kind of high-tech agriculture primarily developed
for big cities.

Community City Farm at Nana Nani Park Chowpatty in Mumbai

Early morning on 28th Nov 2010, saw enthusiastic members of the Park join Urban
Leaves volunteers at the inaugural heap making day at Nana Nani Park. This is the
second Community Urban Farm initiated in Mumbai city by the Urban Leaves Volunteers.

The first being at Maharashtra Nature Park.

A documentary on urban agriculture and food security in Lima, Peru

Among many of Lima’s slum neighborhoods, urban agriculture projects have increasingly
become a strategy to improve food security and make communities safer and greener.

Community gardening programs throughout Lima are generating greater access to fresh
nutritious food, thereby helping to break cycles of poverty and hunger. For this
film The Paradigm Shift Project interviewed non-profit organizations; several community
garden members and urban farmers; researchers from local nutritional and agricultural
institutes; as well as local municipal authorities.

New City Farm by Studio One Eleven

The New City Farm was launched in June 2010 by New City Public Schools with support
from the city of Long Beach, California! It is a professionally managed working
farm; we uses garden-based learning to improve academic achievement, promote healthy
lifestyles, and encourage environmental stewardship and community involvement.

Long Beach, California Animal Control - Out of Control

The neighbors who complained about us are “within spitting distance” of our goat
and hen yard, so says Animal Control. Well I can’t spit that far, and even if I
could there is a tall wooden fence separating our yards, ensuring that my spit,
our animals and any dirt that they generate stay on our side of the fence, not
the neighbors’. These same neighbors have a VERY mean dog that they sometimes let
out front unleashed. I love dogs, but their dog scares me. In addition, they have
a semi-industrial machine shop in their renovated garage in their backyard. I can’t
hear myself think over the sound of the power tools, yet they claim that my chickens
and goats make too much noise. Listen for yourself . All recordings were taken from
the same window that opens onto my animal yard.

EPA’s Steps to Create a Community Garden or Expand Urban Agriculture

1. Survey the property and identify potential risks and contaminants for testing.

2. Test your soil. Consider likely environmental contaminants, pH, organic content,
and soil nutrients needed for healthy plant growth.

3. Clean contaminants and add soil amendments to create a safe growing environment.

4. Consider garden design including location, crops, water, sunlight, lighting,
and accessibility.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - November 30, 2010 - Rushing Waters Fisheries, Palmyra, is recalling about 225 pounds of smoked trout and smoked salmon spreads, because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

No illnesses have been reported from eating this product. The contamination was discovered through routine testing conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection.

The recalled products are smoked trout spread labeled lot number 00694 with a sell-by date of Dec 13, and smoked salmon spread labeled with lot 50012 with a sell-by date of Dec 11. Lot numbers and dates are on the bottom of the container. Affected smoked fish spreads were sold in eight-ounce containers and 4.5-pound round plastic tubs in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Consumers who have this product in their refrigerator can discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. For more information contact Rushing Waters at 1-800-378-7088.

Only the smoked fish spreads with the matching lots and dates are being recalled; no other Rushing Waters Fisheries LLC products are included in the recall.

Most healthy individuals are either unaffected by Listeria or experience mild flulike symptoms. However, it can cause complications in pregnant women and have more serious effects on newborns, older adults and people with compromised immune systems.
