Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Freezing Cookies & Cookie Dough: Tip Sheet

Posted By TipNut On March 12, 2009 @ 6:04 am In Baking Tips | No Comments

Frozen baked or unbaked, cookies from your freezer have the same flavor and texture as freshly baked cookies. If your freezer is crowded, you’ll probably prefer to freeze unbaked cookie dough–it takes less freezer space and needs no special handling to prevent breakage. On the other hand, cookies baked before freezing are ready to eat within minutes upon removal from the freezer. Either way, cookies freeze superbly.

How To Freeze Baked Cookies

Cookie Dough & Freshly Baked Cookies

* Bake cookies and cool completely. It is best to store baked cookies in containers (bakery carton, cans, etc.) which will give them protection against the handling and bumping they may get in the freezer.
* Protect cookies by wrapping with layers of crumpled pieces of waxed paper. Separate layers of soft cookies with double thicknesses of waxed paper.
* Be sure metal containers have tight-fitting lids; give cardboard cartons an overwrap of foil or plastic.

How To Freeze Unbaked Cookie Dough

* Drop cookie dough may be packed in bulk in any air-tight freezer container; when ready to bake you need thaw dough only until it is soft enough to let you break off pieces. Or, you can drop dough by teaspoonful onto cookie sheet 1/4’’ apart, quick-freeze for 1 hour, then pack into containers using double thicknesses of waxed paper to separate the layers. This method eliminates thawing time; the frozen drop cookies can be placed in the oven immediately.
* Shape refrigerator cookie dough, wrap in foil or plastic bag and freeze. When ready to bake, simply slice off as many cookies as you wish from the frozen dough and return balance of dough to freezer. The cut cookies can be put to bake immediately.
* Rolled cookies should be rolled and cut for baking before freezing. Pack with two sheets of waxed paper separating each layer. These, too, can go from your freezer into the oven without thawing.

Cookie Thawing Instructions

* Baked Cookies: Thaw in freezer wrapping at room temperature 15-30 minutes depending on thickness of the cookies and number packed in each container.
* Unbaked Cookie Dough: Thaw in freezer wrapping at room temperature until dough can be handled; place on greased cookie sheet, bake as usual.

Holiday Baking Tips: Cookie Assembly Line

Posted By TipNut On December 21, 2009 @ 11:44 am In Baking Tips | 1 Comment

It’s that time of year again when we’re baking up a storm, filling dainty trays and gift boxes with fresh homemade baked goods to give as gifts. Here are a few tips I have for making the most of your time when baking several dozen cookies [1] at once.
Holiday Baking: Cookie Assembly Line Tips

Baking Cookies For The Holidays Is Always A Treat!
Get Prepared:

* Before you get started, have all your recipes chosen, all the baking ingredients on hand, mixing bowls, measuring utensils and baking sheets ready to go. I like to have 3 baking sheets going at once, I find them cooled off enough to fill again as I’m rotating batches in the oven (I bake one sheet at a time).

Day One:

* Most cookie doughs can be refrigerated or even frozen ahead [2]. I like to make up several different batches of cookie dough all in one day and then refrigerate them until I’m ready to bake.
* Cover each batch of dough well with plastic wrap and make a label with masking tape: Write down the type of cookie, the temperature to bake, the amount of time to bake and whether or not the dough needs to be chilled when shaped or at room temperature. For example: P.B. 350 @ 10-12, chilled. That tells me “Peanut Butter cookie dough bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes, dough needs to stay chilled”. Fix the tape onto the wrap. As you take out the dough to bake, you won’t need to refer back to recipe cards or cookbooks, all the info you need to know is on the label.

Day Two:

* Bring out any batches of dough that need to be at room temperature.
* Preheat the oven.
* Line baking sheets with parchment paper and begin filling them with cookies. Start with the batches of chilled dough. When the first tray is ready, pop it in the oven and start filling the rest of your trays. If the dough you’re using is fine at room temperature, add dough on top of sheets of parchment paper. These can then be lifted onto baking sheets when you have one available. For best results, make sure to place cookie dough on sheets that have cooled first.
* Lay cooling racks along the counter so they’re ready for the cookies hot from the oven. Since I only bake one sheet of cookies at a time in the oven, I’ll take the extra rack out of the oven and use this for a cooling rack (it’s nice and big). For smaller cookies, I’ll use a regular rack. Let the cookies cool for at least 30 minutes before moving off the racks to make room for the next batch coming out of the oven.
* I find best results when baking just one sheet of cookies at a time, it’s worth it to invest in a few large cookie sheets (measure your oven first to see how large you can go). For a perfectly fitted large baking sheet, you can try wrapping an oven rack with foil (several times to give it some thickness so the cookies won’t get scorched and undercooked). While one rack is baking you can fill up the next rack with dough.
* If cookies need to be rolled in a coating or iced while still warm, do that while other batches of cookies are baking. I like to save these for the end of the baking spree.
* Once cookies have completely cooled, you can pack them for storage or seal them in containers until you’re ready to decorate them.

Day Three:

* Decorate cookies as needed. Allow decorations to fully set. Package as required.

I find this to be a less hectic method for baking dozens of cookies [3] (well over a hundred can be made over the weekend stress-free) and it only consumes a couple hours each day (baking day will need a few more hours depending on how many cookies are being made). If the kiddos are excited about helping decorate the cookies, it’s really nice to be able to sit and do the decorating with them rather than jumping up and down getting cookies out of the oven or shaping cookie dough onto sheets.

If giving batches of homemade cookies as gifts, see these creative packaging ideas [4].

Creative Container Gardening: Tips & Ideas

Posted By TipNut On April 19, 2010 @ 8:40 am In Green Thumb Projects,Outdoor Gardening,Popular Tips | 6 Comments

Lots of goodies today! If you’d like to get creative with your yard display this year, I’ve put together a list to help tweak some creative container ideas for you (this is also a great way to repurpose household items [1] that would otherwise be junked).

Next you’ll find four videos: two provide tips for container gardening that will help your potted plants do their best, and two videos show how to make your own garden containers using hypertufa (I love that stuff!).

Then you’ll find a few more ideas for creative gardening listed here on Tipnut.
Creative Garden Pot Containers (Ideas)

Here is a list of different items you can use to make some very creative plant and flower displays, I’ve either seen these implemented or come across mention of them.

Make sure to add your favorite ideas too!

1. Work Boots (leave the toe intact or cut out for flowers to bloom out both ends)
2. Metal Buckets & Pails (these can be painted in either a solid color or with a decorative design–but plain metal works too)
3. Wicker Baskets (these can be painted)
4. Wooden Kegs/Whisky Barrels/Rain Barrels
5. Wheelbarrow
6. Old Toybox & Wooden Crates
7. Deep Roasting Pans, Stock Pots
8. Old Bicycle (I saw a yard display once that had a bicycle basket attached to the front handlebars with flowers planted inside, as well as hanging flower bags fixed across the seat)
9. Old Fashioned Baby Carriage
10. Mailbox
11. Old Chair (cut out the seat and attach a fitted container inside)
12. Dresser Drawer
13. Deep Enamelware Pots
14. Child’s Wagon (choose one that’s deep so there’s lots of soil for the plants to grow)
15. End Table (turned on its side)
16. Watering Cans
17. Hypertufa Containers (see more info below)
18. Bird Houses (large with the roof removed and a plant inside)
19. Wooden Tool Box
20. Old Fashioned Bird Cage (pot inside)
21. Hollowed Out Stumps & Logs
22. Old Wash Tubs

Container Tips

* The sky’s the limit when choosing containers but use items that have a deep space, enough to hold the necessary amount of potting soil for your plants and flowers to thrive. Once you start getting creative with your containers, you’ll be looking at “junk” in a whole new way .
* Make sure that you either drill or cut drainage holes otherwise the plants won’t do well and the roots will rot.
* For metal containers, you can line them with several thicknesses of newspaper before filling with potting soil. This will give the roots some protection from the heat.
* If you choose items that won’t survive strong winds without toppling over (like a standing bicycle), choose places to display in the yard that will provide some shelter from the wind.
* For large containers, first fill with false bottoms or recycled materials so you can save money on potting soil (also mentioned in one of the videos below).

Tips For Container Gardening

Here are two different videos offering tips for preparing plant pots and containers. I have included summary notes under each video for those who can’t view them.

Notes:

* Make sure the container has a drainage hole so excess water will come out the bottom to prevent root rot.
* Bigger pots are better since they hold the water longer. To save on potting soil as well as not make the pots too heavy, try filling the bottom of the pots with recycled materials like styrofoam peanuts, crushed cans or a false bottom (you can buy these). Top with a square of weed barrier fabric before adding potting mix so the soil stays above the bottom filler materials.
* Pick a good potting soil mix that contains perlite or vermiculite for drainage as well as peatmoss to hold the moisture.
* If the potting soil you use doesn’t contain any fertilizer, add & mix in some slow release fertilizer to the potting mix before you fill the pot with plants.
* Water plants thoroughly and check the plants daily.

Three Things You Need To Know To Grow Great Containers:

Notes:

* Make sure you water enough so that the water comes out the bottom of the container. This ensures that the entire container of soil is wet, not just the top.
* Feed plants at least once a week.
* Liquid Fish Emulsion is the best growth food for most container plants since it contains all the growth fertilizers plants need for superior growth.

Make Your Own Garden Pots With Hypertufa

I’ve written about hypertufa before [2], now here are some videos showing you how easy it is to make:

Notes:

* Find forms using things like dish pans, oil pans, boxes
* Materials: Equal parts Perlite, Peat Moss, Pure Portland Cement
* Water: Slowly add water (usually slightly less than the amount of the container used for the above ingredients). Mix enough water so the mix will hold shape when making a ball.
* Pack the hypertufa into the form (first lined with plastic), about 2’’ thick (smaller containers are fine with 1’’ to 1 1/2’’ thick).
* Make sure the container will drain well.
* Use potting mix that drains well.
* The hypertufa pots are fine to leave outside over winter since they are porous.

Hypertufa How To & Tips

Notes:

* Make Hypertufa with Peat, Perlite, Portland Cement. Mix all together before adding water. You can add concrete coloring at this point (check at the hardware store).
* Build a well in the middle of the mix then add a small amount of water. Mix, slowly add more water, mix, keep adding water until you have the consistency of cottage cheese and the hypertufa mix will hold together its shape when you form into a ball.
* If you add too much water, it’s easy to fix by adding a little more peat or perlite until you get the consistency you want.
* First line the form with plastic so the pot is easy to pop out when it’s dry. Add bubble wrap if you’d like a bubble design on the outside of the pot. You can also add pieces of moss along the sides.
* Press the hypertufa into the form, start at the bottom then the sides. Pack it in tight.
* Sit for 5 to 7 days to harden, then pop the pot out of the form. Leave for another 7 to 10 days to make sure the hypertufa is dry.
* Rinse the pot with vinegar to make sure all the lime from the cement will be removed.
* Bonsais do well in hypertufa pots.

DIY Wrap Up: 101 Tags, Toppers & Wraps {Freebies}

Posted By TipNut On December 4, 2010 @ 3:17 am In Crafty Ideas,Paper Crafts,Popular Tips | 3 Comments

Everything you need for wrapping and presenting gifts with a little homemade flair is on this list. Enjoy!
Gift Tag Printables

1. Adorable Penguin Gift Tags [1]: Seriously.Cute.Printables!
2. Mitten Gift Tags and Background [2]: The scatter of mittens was designed to be a pattern on the reverse of the gift tags, you can use it however you wish. For the tag, after you cut them out, use a hole punch so you can tie the tags to gifts. For an extra cute touch, add those paper circles you use, oh dear I forget what they are called, but you put them on pages where you punch a hole to make it stronger.
3. Penguin Notes [3]: Use as gift labels or tags, whatever you like.
4. Mitten Ornaments or Gift Tags [4]: With the help of a hole punch and some ribbon, these cute mittens can be transformed into ornaments or git tags!
5. Santa Approved Snowman Gift Tag [5]: Full sheet of a cute snowman.
6. Elf Tags [6]: If you have a thing for Christmas elves, these are for you!
7. Free Printable Gift Tags [7]: Free country primitive printable hang tags for products, gifts, scrapbooking or crafts. Add your own text for a customized tag!
8. Gift Tag For The Kids To Write On [8]: As a general rule gift tags are small. Sometimes really tiny. This makes it difficult for children, like ours, who are in their first years of writing to write on tags themselves. I made these holiday tags so that the kids can address the gifts to their teachers and friends this year. They are fairly large (1/4 of a letter size sheet of paper) so that they can fit in everything comfortably.
9. Blank Printable Simple Stripes Gift Tag Template [9]: These classic printable tags feature a striped effect and are a great way to embellish any present, gift-wrapped or not. This gift tag template showcases a selection of 6 different printable tags (in 6 different colors). The tags are blank, so you can add a message fit for whatever the occasion.
10. Free Printable Doily Napkin Bands & More [10]: With the dinner table in mind I fashioned these simple little Printable Napkin Bands as well as some little doily inspired extras that can be printed and then hung like a mobile, strung in a row to create a garland, or even used as gift tags.
11. Holiday Gift Tags (pdf) [11]: Patterns and artwork to create your own Holiday gift tags from Amy Butler.
12. Printable Holiday Tags (pdf) [12]: Four different designs: Snowman, Christmas Stocking, Christmas Ornament, Gingerbread Man.
13. Gift Tag Download [13]: Four tags per page, print out on cardstock of your choice, punch a hole in the little flower center at the top of the tag and insert your string.
14. Make Gift Tags With Fabric Scraps [14]: Cut a small piece of fabric with pinking shears. Hand sew fabric onto tag. Write or stamp a message inside. Done.
15. Whisker Graphics Gift Tag Download [15]: Ten different designs to make gift tags or cards.
16. Assorted Gift Tags (pdf) [16]: Free printables for handmade gifts.
17. Free Printable Christmas Gift Tags [17]: To use these gift tags, print them out with your home or office printer, cut them out and (optionally) punch holes to add string or ribbon to tie these festive labels onto your Christmas gifts. Instant and easy, and there’s 10 tags per page!
18. Gift Tags For Homemade Gifts [18]: Several designs to choose from.
19. Gift Tag & Topper [19]: When going to a party or holiday event haven’t you ever had a beautiful bow/decoration that just gets crushed under the weight of another gift that someone stacks on top? Argh! This idea is a solution to that and it’s super easy to make.
20. Freebies! Set of 4 Gift Tags [20]: Pretty and decorative: Monsieur, Mademoiselle and Bebe.
21. Merry Christmas Cards [21]: Six pretty gift tag designs (round).
22. Four Seasons Gift Tag Template [22]: A free downloadable gift tag template for you to print, trim, and dress up your parcels.
23. Free Holiday Gift Tags [23]: Six different designs in two different colors. Simple yet lovely!
24. Angel Christmas Gift Tag [24]: A template with 5 Christmas gift tags (12 x 7 cm) for you to print.
25. Holiday Gift Tags Download (pdf) [25]: Lovely circular tags with simple mistletoe design.
26. Papercrave Gift Tags (pdf) [26]: Several different designs to choose from, very nice!
27. Free Holiday Gift Tags [27]: Adorable gift tags “embroidery” style–very sweet, available via pdf download.
28. Humorous Gift Tags (pdf) [28]: Several different designs with humorous notes.
29. Marth Stewart’s Clip Art Tags (pdf) [29]: 18 different designs on this sheet of colorful (and fun) gift tags.
30. Fabric Stash Gift Labels [30]: This How-To is an easy, no-sew project. Utilizing your stash fabrics; some scraps of ribbon, cording, or other loop-making material; some Wonder-Under; and your imagination, we’ll make beautiful, custom gift tags which your gift recipients will ooh and ahh over for years.
31. Sparkling Gift Tags [31]: These sparkling gift tags, with a front flap for holding gift-certificate cards, are as functional as they are pretty. Tie them to presents, or hang them on the tree.
32. Embossed Gift Tags & Cards [32]: These beautifully embossed cards require equipment you may not have lying around the house, such as a heat tool, embossing powder, and a glycerin stamp pad.
33. DIY Candy-Colored Gift Tags: {Free Printables} [33]: The gift tags are available via pdf download and feature six different colored tags (one sheet). Print on heavy cardstock, punch a hole through the top and attach with ribbon or twine.
34. DIY Bright Polka Dots Gift Tags [34]: Six different colored cards per sheet (free pdf).

Gift Bags, Wraps & Boxes

1. How To Make Decorative Boxes With Take Out Containers [35]: A quick video from DIY Maven with a nifty idea for making pretty, decorative boxes out of take-out containers.
2. How to Make Organza Envelopes [36]: You don’t need much fabric for these wrappings, so buy the best: silk organza (polyester doesn’t press out as well.) From there, the envelope can be cut, sewn, and embellished in less than an hour.
3. Gift Bags Made From Envelopes [37]: Print a design on the envelope and then with a few snips of the scissors, some clever folding and pretty ribbon added for handles, voila! nice gift bag.
4. Quick & Easy Origami Gift Box Tutorial [38]: It’s a very easy origami lidded gift box which you and/or the kids can whip up in less than 10 minutes. This box would be perfect for packaging smaller Christmas presents like jewelery, or you can use these boxes as dividers within a larger box (which is great for keeping our crafting supplies under control).
5. Teeny-Tiny Gift Boxes [39]: Pop some chocolates in these gorgeous little purses as a sweet thankyou, a table place marker at a special event or just a thoughtful gift for a friend, family member or work colleague. A simple tag completes the package – and it can be made in under half an hour!
6. Itty Bitty Sweet Boxes [40]: Pop some chocolates or party favours in these gorgeous little cone-shaped boxes – they make cute table place markers or hang them over the back of each guest’s chair!
7. Magic Boxes [41]: With some fancy folding, a bit of cutting and some dabs of glue, these little boxes turn into something quite impressive. Embellish the finished box with some fancy ribbons or bows and use for gift giving or to hold little keepsakes.
8. Paper Flower CD Case: How To [42]: Creative way to decoratively wrap CD gifts.
9. Make Gift-Worthy CD/DVD Pockets: {How-To} [43]: These little pockets are great for packaging for so many things: CDs, DVDs, gift cards, money, whatever you can think of! You’ll need decorative card stock and tape and then make some clever folds and snips to put it all together. Don’t miss the tip at the bottom: keep the extra bits of card stock to make pretty tags and notes.
10. How To Make A Gift Box From A Cereal Box [44]: Using just scissors, hot glue and an old cereal box, you can whip up a most-excellent gift box.
11. Tutorial: Handmade Gift Pouch [45]: Use some colored meshy tulle fabric with an interesting texture (plus it’s see-though so you can actually see what’s inside) but you could use just about any kind of fabric as long as it doesn’t fray, like felt for instance!
12. Drawstring Gift Bag Tutorial [46]: A simple drawstring bag to use for gift giving instead of wrapping paper. Intended to be reused again and again and again.

17. Velvet Gelt Bag [51]: Gift bags of dreidels and chocolate gelt, or coins, are even more of a treat when made from velvet embossed with symbols of Hanukkah. Can use any holiday design you like.
18. Free Small Lace Pastel Boxes [52]: Results are best when printed on card stock.
19. Christmas Wreath Box [53]: Template and instructions, pdf download available.
20. Make an origami gift box [54]: This origami gift box makes perfect reusable packaging for small gifts – and looks smashing under the tree.

23. Scrapbook Paper Gift Bags [57]: Here’s an idea to turn colorful sheets of scrapbook paper into custom fit gift bags. All you need for supplies is some scrapbook paper, glue (tape will work too) and a bit of ribbon for the handle. Nice and easy project!
24. Make Gift Bags From Newspaper: {They’re Nice Too!} [58]: This is a great idea for recycling newspaper and the bags are pretty sturdy since they’re made with two sheets. With some clever folding, a bit of glue and cardstock (or chipboard), you can whip up a bunch in no time. Add some string (and eyelets) for the handles. Notice how nice the bag turns out if you’re choosy about what section of the newspaper will show on the outside.
25. Gift Message Box [59]: What a lovely gift! You’ll find instructions and three different templates to choose from (free pdf downloads). Create the box of your choice, embellish then fill with notes and whatever else you like.
26. Celery Stamped Gift Wrap: How To [60]: The idea is to take a celery stalk base (the end bit that you normally chop & compost or throw out), and cut the celery so that each stalk is level. Dip in paint and stamp away, fun!

Gift Card & Money Wraps

1. Gift Card Box Pattern [61]: Add a personal touch to your gift-card presents by making the box yourself. It doesn’t take much to make this darling little box come to life — wrap with a simple ribbon or decorate with an assortment of your favorite paper-craft supplies.
2. Money Bags [62]: Use them to stuff a stocking or to horde your rainy day change collection.
3. Reindeer Gift Pouch [63]: Here’s a pattern with instructions for the hand-stitched version.
4. Pretty Purse Gift Card Holder [64]: Fun and fast, this cute crochet purse is a terrific way to add a special touch when wrapping small gifts or gift cards this holiday season! Makes a great accent to larger wrapped packages as well!
5. Jacob’s Ladder Christmas Card & Gift Card Holder [65]: When it is opened like a book, the gift card is on one side, and when it is opened from the back cover, the gift card magically appears on the opposite side.
6. Gift Card Holders [66]: Two ideas work for gift cards, tickets, cash, and more. Grace oversize gift tags with ribbon pockets or turn wide ribbons into pouches. Either can be attached to a package or presented on its own.
7. Mini Shopping Bags [67]: Fancy little totes filled with small presents — gift cards, cash, jewelry, and other trinkets — might make Scrooge himself smile. Wrap the gift in tissue paper before tucking it inside, and don’t forget to add a tiny tag.
8. Money Bags [68]: Fancy little totes filled with cash will bring a big smile to any child.
9. Fabric Card Holder Tutorial [69]: Adjust dimensions to fit the gift cards.
10. Rhinestone-Studded Gift Card Holder [70]: This ribbon-wrapped rhinestone-studded holder is pretty as a package. It’s also multifunctioning: Use it to announce the menu of a holiday dinner or to hold a party favor.
11. Gift Card Holder [71]: Flatten a toilet paper roll, cover it with decorative paper to make this decorative gift pouch.
12. Rickrack Hanging Gift Card Holder [72]: Rickrack transforms this festive red-and-white card holder into a pocketbook-like tree ornament. Hang it on a bough so it — and its contents — will stay clear of the floor-level frenzy on Christmas Eve.
13. Gift Wallet [73]: Fresh bills stay crisp in these wallets that double as gift box and card. Use medium card stock for the billfold and wrapping paper for the pockets.
14. Paper Stockings [74]: Handmade paper stockings are a departure from the envelopes often used for money and gift cards.
15. Gift Card Holder [75]: Here’s a gift card holder that you can hang on your tree! It’s an under 5 minute project, super easy and gives the recipient a little something to unwrap.
16. Gift Card Bag Tutorial [76]: Very nice, geared more for scrapbooking tools.
17. Box Card [77]: Is it a card or is it a box? Well it’s both…..This card looks like a regular card until you open it and then ‘surprise’ there’s a little box attached. You can use them for gift card holders or sending flat type embellishments to fellow carders as a little surprise.
18. Book of Money [78]: Bibliophiles will love spending these pages on a book of their own choosing, the pages are money.

Gift Toppers & Embellishments

1. D.I.Y. Eco-Happy Pom Pom Gift Topper [79]: A cool twist on the standard pom pom … plastic grocery bag pom pom gift toppers!
2. Gift Box Sashes (pdf) [80]: Tutorial download from Amy Butler.
3. Reusable Gift Wrap Tutorial [81]: A super simple tutorial that shows step by step what to do. If you can sew in a fairly straight line and use pinking shears than you can make this!
4. Paper Bow Tutorial [82]: The perfect Bow to create in minutes to co-ordinate with Wrapping or Gift Bags, you will never want to buy another Bow once you have tried these.
5. Gift-Topper Berries [83]: Decorate holiday packages with these red-and-green berry clusters, left. Attach them with waxed twine, and then tie gift tags to the stems.
6. Package Toppers [84]: These creative package toppers will add a quick finishing touch to your holiday gifts.
7. Make Your Own Buttons and Bows Gift Wrap [85]: Dress a plain white box in perfect party attire by gluing on playful red buttons and topping it off with holiday striped ribbons and a lime-green pinstripe bow.
8. Gift Wrap Idea – Woodsy How To [86]: There’s no escaping this year’s woodland trend, with oak leaves, acorns, squirrels, deer, tree stumps and of course good old faux bois (fake wood grain) popping up all over the place. You may even be buying some Christmas gifts with a forest-y feel to them, so why not extend this trend to your parcel wrapping?
9. Gift Wrap Idea – Personalized How To [87]: The idea behind this look is really simple – though it takes a little time to put into practice – and will make your parcels really stand out! This is an ideal way of decorating gifts for men and boys.
10. Snowflake Gift Topper [88]: Let a simple snowflake crochet pattern dress up your gifts this holiday season.
11. Chintz Traditional Boxes [89]: Snippets of ribbon and chintz transform boxes into the sweetest containers for your treasures.
12. Martha’s Favorite Bow [90]: Once you master this classic bow, try some creative variations on your gifts. Tie your ribbon over a wider, contrasting band of ribbon or paper, run parallel ribbons side by side, or make a simple double knot and snip notches into the tails.
13. Gift Adornments [91]: These smartly wrapped packages have retro charm. Attaching the holiday tags is a cinch — they’re designed with slits that fit around ribbon. And the handles slip right over the tops of plain bags, turning them into cute parcels you can carry.
14. Ribbon Reinvented: Curling Ribbons [92]: These trimmings are same ol’, same ol’ in the world of gift wrap, but a few twists can turn them into something new. Concentric loops, held together with a staple, impart a modern look. Long teardrop shapes are unabashedly pretty. Accordion folds make a flower or a lone sunburst rendered in ribbon. As for loose spirals, there’s only one rule: The more, the merrier.
15. Recycle Magazines Into Gift Bows [93]: Tutorial from the Craftster forum.
16. Jingle Bells [94]: Re-create the sound of Santa’s sleigh with a small bell attached to Christmas parcels.
17. Woven Ribbon Wrap [95]: Think outside the box: interweave ribbons to dress up a gift.

Food & Beverage Gift Packaging

1. Wine Wrap and Tags [96]: Tutorial from Better Homes & Gardens.
2. Holiday Cookie Mailing Tubes [97]: Just the right shape for mailing (or hand-delivering) cookies, bright-colored cardboard tubes look even more festive when outfitted in red and white to mimic the season’s best candy canes.
3. Swirled Organza Bottle Bag [98]: Dazzling package wraps double the fun of this host-and-hostess gift.
4. Wine Bottle Gift Bag Tutorial [99]: Sewing tute, bag has a tied closure at top.
5. Bottle Wraps [100]: While a bottle of wine is an easy gift to give, it’s often troublesome to wrap. The three ideas here begin with soft, flexible materials that conform to a bottle’s contour.
6. Holiday Hang Tag Tutorial [101]: If you plan to gift a bottle of anything this holiday season, skip the store-bought wine bag and whip up these handmade hang tags. They’re so easy with the stencil provided.

Gifts With Felt Scraps: Vintage Gift Ideas

Gifts With Felt Scraps - Click For Pattern Download

Know someone who has everything–a Christmas problem child? Why not make a mitt to hang on her tree? She will cherish it year after year.

Tuck a handkerchief or lipstick inside–or just a card with a greeting; or make the glasses case or envelope for stockings, something to use the year around.

To make the patterns, enlarge the chart letting each square equal one inch.

Mitt (A): Cut mitt from red felt. The heart and cuff band are dubonnet felt. Cut two small leaf shapes of dark green felt, make the long middle leaf chartreuse. Cut two mitt shapes (include length of cuff) of red tarlatan for the lining and back of mitt.

Use ordinary colored cotton thread or embroidery floss for the embroidering and a variety of stitches will give it interest. Use a feather stitch in dark green for thumb line, and two dark leaves could be feather stitched in chartreuse, while the chartreuse leaf might be chain stitched in dark green. A chain stitch of bright red is used on the heart.

For outlining heart use gold cord (this can be bought in needlework departments of variety or dry goods stores.) Sew the gold cord to the felt with gold sewing thread. Brighten the cuff of the mitt with gold cord as shown in drawing.

Sequins are placed as suggested; sew a bright bead in a contrasting color on top of sequin to hold it to the felt. After decorating front of mitt, attach tarlatan lining and back. They are sewed to the front piece with red yarn in whipping stitch all around. At cuff, whipstitch lining to felt piece and then across single edge of back, leaving an opening.

Glasses Case (B): Cut top and bottom patterns from dubonnet felt. The heart is bright red felt; the flowers are chartreuse; leaves medium green. For sewing on the gold cord and using embroidery stitches, follow suggestions given in making the mitt. White beads at the petal tips of the flowers will brighten the design. After the front is finished it will look better if it is sewed 1/4-inch in from the edge–all the way around–on the sewing machine; then baste back on and sew around the long way between the X’s as indicated on pattern, leaving one end open for glasses to slip in. It is finished after the edge is trimmed with pinking scissors.

CASE FOR STOCKINGS or handkerchiefs can be made using the same design with the same colors of felt, or use any felt scraps available.

Picture of Finished Projects

The model pictured is made of a white felt piece 6 1/4 inches wide by 14 1/2 inches long. A pastel taffeta lining is catch-stitched into the pocket part and on the inside of flap after decorating is finished. The bottom part folds up 5 inches from the end and is machine stitched up sides to make pocket. A snap fastener is sewed at lower edge of flap and at corresponding position on pocket. The lower edge of flap is pinked for a finish.

Squares, Slices & Tarts For Holiday Baking: Recipes

Posted By TipNut On December 17, 2009 @ 11:40 am In Recipes | 2 Comments

This Recipe Hit List for holiday baking compliments the 30 Holiday Cookie Recipe List [1], this is a big batch of recipes for squares, slices and tarts–perfect for gifts and baking trays. Still a week left to do some holiday baking!

Lots to choose from, many traditional favorites but also some new ideas to try. Here are 28 recipes for tarts, squares, bars and slices…
Holiday Tart Recipes

*Note: Descriptions below are quotes from the recipe sites

1. Cocoa Tassies with Peppermint Creme Filling [2]: Cocoa Tassies with Peppermint Creme Filling (Adapted from BH&G). Recipe from Culinary In The Desert.
2. Pecan Tassies…aka Tiny Pecan Tarts! [3]: In all honesty, I do know why I don’t make these little treasures more often (other than the calorie thing!). They are somewhat time consuming and a bit tedious to make. But they are so worth the effort, and everyone loves them. I can also say that the cream cheese pastry just melts in your mouth, and its the only pastry I can make with any shred of confidence. These little tarts are tiny morsels of perfection, and I hate to brag, but they just ARE. Recipe from What’s Cooking In A Southern Kitchen.
3. Lemon Tassies [4]: Being a lemon lover, and knowing that I had some cream cheese that needed using, these were a no brainer. The only complaint I had about these cookies was too much cookie and not enough filling. But as I looked on Martha’s website today, I saw that the recipe listed online has the same amount of filling, but the cookie ingredients are cut in half. I’m not sure why they changed this when they published the book. The recipe below is from the book, but I would suggest halving the cookie dough, or doubling the filling! Recipe found at Taste And Tell.
4. White Chocolate & Cranberries Tartlets [5]: For the tart shells I used dough recipe from La Tartine Gourmande that I already tried before and liked very much. This time I used ground walnuts instead of almond flour and was very satisfied with the taste. Recipe found at Palachinka.
5. Prize Winning Butter Tarts [6]: There’s nothing sweeter than good old fashioned butter tarts. Apparently, this decadent treat is a Canadian classic. Only in Canada, eh? Pity! This recipe won my mom top prize at a Fall Fair years ago. It’s my dad’s favourite, although we don’t make them very often. That’s how he stays so skinny. Recipe found at Christie’s Corner.
6. Peanut Butter and Milk Chocolate Chip Tassies [7]: Recipe found at Hershey’s Kitchen.
7. Apricot Cookie Tarts [8]: This recipe calls for dried apricots simmered in a simple syrup spiked with a bit of liqueur. Regardless of the form they take, apricots will always be something I enjoy — especially baked between layers of a brown sugar crumble. Nothing compares to their perfectly sweet tartness. Recipe from Sass & Veracity.
8. Mini Millionaire Shortbread Pies [9]: They turned out to be as everybite as wonderful as pictured and described in the book. The size was perfect to enjoy them without being hit on the head by a spoon full of sugar. Recipe found at Tartelette.

Squares & Slices For The Holiday Tray

*Note: Descriptions below are quotes from the recipe sites

1. Double White Chocolate Layered Bars [10]: Double your chocolate pleasure! White chocolate is in the cookie bars and also drizzled on top. Recipe from Pillsbury.
2. Nanaimo Bars [11]: According to local legend about 35 years ago, a Nanaimo housewife entered her recipe for chocolate squares in a magazine contest. In a burst of civic pride, she chose to dub the entry not “Daphne’s Delights” or “Mary’s Munchies”, but “Nanaimo Bars”. The entry won a prize, thereby publishing the town as much as her cooking. Some American tourists claim sovereignty over the dessert, referred to as “New York Slice” which is sold in many other places in the world. Nanaimo residents refuse to accept this theory, however, believing that once you set foot on Vancouver Island, there are no other places in the world. The official Nanaimo Bar recipe was available as a handout as well as on quality tea towel and apron souvenirs. Recipe found at City of Nanaimo website.
3. Montelimar Nougat [12]: This is ooey, chewy honey goodness at it’s best. It may seem a bit tricky, but once you get over the fear of hot sugar, it’s really not too bad. Recipe from The Barmy Baker.
4. Dark Chocolate Bark with Walnuts & Dried Cherries [13]: It’s festive and pretty, simple and delicious, studded with chewy dried cherries, bits of crystallized ginger and meaty toasted walnuts. I can say with authority it would make an excellent addition to your holiday cookie tray. Recipe found at The Kitchen Sink.
5. Chocolate Mint Fudge Brownies [14]: These brownies are wonderful and exactly what I was trying to create. The texture of these fall somewhere between a ‘cakey’ and ‘fudgy’ but lean a little more toward the fudgy side. In my opinion they have the perfect texture. Recipe found at Baking Blonde’s Weblog.
6. Rainbow Layer Bars with Almond Paste [15]: They remind me of Christmas and also of an Italian flag with the red, green and white layers. All I know is have almond paste in them (which is a LOVE of mine) and I want to make these this Christmas! Recipe found at An American Housewife.
7. Those Valuable Fruitcake Cookies (or Bars) [16]: If you make bars, cut when cool into squares. Wrap cooled cookies individually in plastic wrap. They’ll survive mailing to relatives far away, travel in backpacks and pockets, and the brisk school trade. Have fun with them and Happy Holidays to all! Recipe found at The Garden Granny.
8. Butterscotch Confetti Squares [17]: This is probably hands down my favourite “sweets” recipe. My Grandma would make these when I was a kid. Recipe from Tales From The Fairy Blogmother.
9. Chocolate Peanut Butter Confetti [18]: I turned to the Company’s Company cookbook series, and selected this square from Best Loved Treats. The recipe was called Butterscotch Confetti, but I altered it to resemble another square that I had tried before. FOr a colourful and tasty treat, try this out. Recipe from Onions Make Me Cry.
10. Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge [19]: I made this for the first time this summer and realized that this is a perfect Christmas fudge. Creamy, peanut buttery with a crown of chocolate. So tasty and EASY to make. Aren’t those the best kind of recipes? Recipe from Heather’s Recipes.
11. Easy Cherry Almond White Chocolate Fudge [20]: This recipe takes about 10 minutes to prep, and a minimum of 2 hours to cool, so it is relatively quick. I really like to individually wrap each piece in candy foil, which makes a great presentation. Recipe found at This Food Thing.
12. Easy Christmas Fudge [21]: To me, fudge is the ultimate Christmas indulgence. In fact, about the only time I have fudge throughout the year, is at Christmas time. This fudge is super easy to make, and you can dress it up with just about any topping you like. Recipe from What’s Baking.
13. Lemon Bars [22]: These are bold and tart lemon bars, ones I feel are best in smaller doses than Ina Garten suggests. I’ve made a few changes to the recipe–increased the salt in the crust, reduced the sugar in the lemon filling and an encouragement to grease your pan, as mine were all but cemented into their non-stick pan. For those of you who like the 1:1 crust to lemon layer ratio, use the second option. Recipe from Smitten Kitchen.
14. Chocolate-Almond Fudge Squares [23]: These rich, fudgy bites are basically almondy truffles cut into squares, and they are fantastic! Recipe from CookiePie.
15. Holiday Bark [24]: I usually do both versions of this. Salted nuts with chocolate morsels and peppermint candies with white chocolate. it’s always a hit at get togethers. Recipe from C & X Cooking.
16. Cherry Mash Bars [25]: This is a family favorite that my mom always makes every Christmas! Recipe found at Pretty Random Thoughts.
17. 7 Layers in One Bar Cookies [26]: I saw them described as the famed seven layer bars, but all mixed together. I’d say that is an accurate statement. They are amazing – moist, complex and yummy. They were so easy to put together. Recipe found at Lobster & Fishsticks.
18. Date Squares Recipe [27]: How we loved these squares with their two layers of buttery oatmeal crust sandwiched with a layer of pureed dates that have a hint of vanilla. Recipe found at Joy of Baking.
19. Christmas Baking [28]: Recipes for Toffee Bars, White Christmas Fudge, Mocha Toffee Cashew Bars and Coconut Macaroons. Recipes found at Kitchens Are Monkey Business.
20. Nestle Walnut Coconut Slices [29]: Recipe found at Niya’s World.

28+ Tempting Crockpot Meals To Make: {Recipes}

Posted By TipNut On December 2, 2010 @ 12:38 am In Recipes | 17 Comments

I’m always on the lookout for quick & easy recipes that can be thrown together in minutes then walked away from while supper cooks (and they need to be tasty too!). For this week’s Recipe Hit List I’ve combined crockpot recipes that were previously featured here on Tipnut, plus a few full recipes added to the bottom (now everything’s in one handy place).

Crockpots Come In Handy On Busy Days
Tempting Crockpot Recipes

*Note: Descriptions below are quotes from the recipe sites

1. Slow Cooker Steak Fajitas [1]: This one is fabulous. While the meat fell apart, the onions, peppers, and flavor were perfect! Recipe found at Cook And Tell.
2. Super Easy Spaghetti Sauce [2]: I love store bought spaghetti sauce, even though my mother didn’t even know it existed until we were nearly teens. Once she tried it, she was hooked on the ease and the quality. She says “I figure those companies put thousands and thousands of dollars and years of research into perfecting those recipes and who are we not to use them!”. Of course, I love that way of thinking! Still, I like to dress mine up a bit. This both customizes the flavor a bit but also serves to make your sauce go further. Recipe found at Southern Plate.
3. Crock Pot Pot Roast [3]: The marinade for this includes balsamic vinegar, honey, allspice, rosemary, and more; doesn’t that sound delicious? Leftovers also make a great sandwich the next day. Recipe found at The Crepes Of Wrath.
4. Pork Chops With Sauerkraut [4]: I thought I’d post a quickie recipe for you all before it gets too warm to want to fire up the slow cooker. Measurements not needed. Recipe found at Devour This.
5. Enchilada Crockpot Casserole [5]: Anyone who, like me, is constantly in search of easy, delicious, interesting, successful, original slow cooker recipes knows that they’re actually hard to come by. Lots of recipes out there, but not that many of them are easy AND good. Which is why this one is worth its weight in cornbread. Recipe found at Disco Mom Takes On The World.
6. Slow Cooker Pork and Potatoes [6]: This recipe falls under the category of “comfort food” … The whole house smells wonderful when it’s cooking….and the pork is so tender that you won’t even need a knife! Recipe from Sweet & Saucy.
7. Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff [7]: The recipe yields a good amount of food and has a flavorful sauce that is good with pasta. As always, adjust the ingredients to your family’s liking and feel free to use low fat/low sodium ingredients. You won’t be able to tell the difference. Recipe found at Embracing Him.
8. Slow Cooker Spinach Lasagna [8]: My only other thought is that for lasagna, this came together very quickly and easily. Definitely a keeper! Recipe at Mulberry Spot.
9. Turkey Meatball Subs [9]: I tend to keep a lot of ground turkey in the house, but this recipe can be made with any ground meat of choice. I wrote this recipe to make them and serve the same day, but if you brown the meatballs ahead of time you can freeze them, when you’re ready to serve just toss them in the crockpot with some red sauce and cook for about 4 hours on high! Found at The Recipe Mission.
10. Crockpot Country Ribs with Mashed Potatoes [10]: Recipe found at $5 Dinners.
11. Slow Cooker Lamb Roast [11]: While the pre-cooked photograph may not look all that appetizing, the aroma of this dish is absolutely mouthwatering. The combination of curry, garlic and lemon belongs with lamb, and tenderizes it beautifully. Recipe found at Snip And Snail.
12. Crock Pot Potato Soup [12]: I made some slight adjustments to the recipe I found and it came out delicious!!! Definitely a dish that I will be making again and again. Recipe found at Sofia Vincenza.
13. Beef and Mushroom Stew in Slow Cooker [13]: Its especially delicious and warms your tummy on these wintery cold days even in the south where you’ve had your unexpected snowfalls lately. Recipe found at Cranberry Blossom.
14. Slow Cooker Corned Beef and Cabbage [14]: I know it’s traditional to make Corned Beef and Cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day, but I didn’t want to make the same old thing I do every other year. So I found this recipe, which adds a bit more flavor. It was excellent even without potatoes (trying to lay off the carbs somewhat). The flavor is kind of hard to describe – sweet and savory and spicy all at the same time. I don’t think I’ll ever do corned beef and cabbage any other way again. Recipe found at Columbus Foodie.
15. Slow Cooker Chicken Chili [15]: It is full of flavor and has a little heat on it’s own but I opted for some additional adobo seasoning, crushed red chilies and a few chipotle chilies to round out the flavor. Recipe found at Mostly Martha.
16. Lemon and Herb CrockPot Roasted Chicken Recipe [16]: My oh my, what a tasty bird this was! I had a frozen chicken that I thawed for a few days in the fridge and plopped it whole into the crockpot. I did make a whole chicken earlier in the year, that was delicious, but this guy had an awesome moist, lemony garlic flavor that made my knees go a bit weak. Recipe found at A Year Of CrockPotting.
17. Chicken & Vegetables With Herbs [17]: Chicken legs, mushrooms, pearl onions and herbs smothered in sauce, yum! Recipe found at Better Homes And Gardens.
18. Slow Cooker Chicken with Creamy Rice & Broccoli [18]: Boneless chicken breasts, three different cans of cream soups, rice, broccoli, garlic & more. Chicken is rubbed with garlic and seared before adding to crockpot. Found at The French Kitchen.
19. Crock Pot Pizza [19]: Ground beef, wide noodles, pizza sauce, mushroom soup, mozzarella cheese and your favorite pizza toppings are all layered in the crockpot. Found at Kaysville Momma.
20. Slow Cooker Ribs [20]: Ribs are seasoned with rub overnight then cooked slow for a few hours in a can of beer in the crockpot (can of coke can be used too). Finish the meat off by smothering in BBQ sauce and cook in the oven for a few minutes. Found at Julie’s Foodie.
21. Beef Burgundy [21]: This recipe requires a bit of fuss, but it sounds delish! Beef stewing meat, bacon, onion, carrots, and more tasty things make this hearty dish. Found at Martin Family Moments.
22. Crockpot Chow Mein Recipe [22]: Make this with chicken or your favorite meat (or even vegetarian). Anything with Chow Mein in the name has to be a hit as far as I’m concerned . Found at A Year Of CrockPotting.
23. Crock Pot Chicken And Dressing Tutorial [23]: What’s not to love in this recipe–ingredients include chicken breasts, cornbread, onion, hard boiled eggs and cream of chicken soup. Found at Southern Plate.
24. Easy Barbeque Pork Sandwiches [24]: Ingredients include pork roast, onion and bbq sauce, super simple crockpot recipe that slow cooks all day. Found at Aggie’s Kitchen.
25. Stuffed Cabbage Casserole For The Crock Pot [25]: A slow cooker version of lazy cabbage rolls, ingredients include ground beef or turkey, cabbage, onion, green pepper, rice and diced tomatoes. Found at Nanny Kim’s Recipes.
26. Super Easy Pot Roast [26]: Beef roast, brown gravy mix, dry Italian salad dressing mix, dry ranch dressing mix, water and that’s it for ingredients! Slow cooks all day. Found at Created And Called.
27. How To Make Crockpot Oatmeal [27]: Wake up to a hot, healthy breakfast ready and waiting for you with a simple recipe for overnight crockpot oatmeal–or try an easy to prepare thermos full of hot cereal that is ready when you get up. Here on Tipnut.
28. Easy Slowcooker Chocolate Fondue [28]: Not a meal but a sweet treat to dip pieces of fresh fruit into. Here on Tipnut.

Tips:

* Crockpot Cooking Tips & Tricks [29]
* Crusty Crockpot Cleaning Tips [30]

Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce

Crockpot Recipe
Ingredients:

1 lb lean ground beef
1 onion (chopped)
1/2 cup green pepper (diced)

2 cans diced tomatoes (14 oz)
1 can tomato paste (6 oz)
1 can tomato sauce (8 oz)
4 garlic cloves (minced)
1 TBS brown sugar
2 tsp oregano (dried)
2 tsp basil (dried)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp thyme (dried)
1 bay leaf

grated parmesan cheese (optional)

Directions:

* Brown meat in saucepan. Add onions and green pepper, browning lightly. Drain and add to slow cooker.
* Add the rest of the ingredients (except parmesan cheese) and give the mix a good stir. Cover.
* Cook on low 7 to 8 hours, remove lid the last hour to thicken sauce.
* Top with parmesan cheese and serve.

Crockpot Pull-Apart Roast Beef

Crockpot Recipe
This recipe’s results are a moist, flavorful, easy to shred roast beef. Serve traditional style with potatoes, gravy & fixings if you like, or serve on thick crusty bread topped with gravy. The beef is rich in flavor by taking on flavor from the onions, garlic and green pepper.

Ingredients:

1 Beef Roast (cheap cut)
1 Onion (large)
1 Green Bell Pepper (large)
Garlic Cloves (as many as you like–the more the merrier!)
1/2 cup oil

Directions:

* Slice the onions into thick rings (separate), make a bed of onions 3 layers deep at bottom of crockpot. Place a few garlic cloves (cut in half) evenly across the onions.
* Place the roast beef on top.
* Cut the green pepper into thick(ish) strips and with the rest of the onion rings, layer across the top and stuff along the sides of the roast beef. Top with more garlic cloves.
* Cover everything evenly with oil.
* Set the crockpot on high and cook for 6 to 7 hours, until roast is done–it should shred and pull apart easily.
* You can make a nice dark gravy from the juices, strain first then make sure to remove the fat and oil with a gravy separator or whatever method you normally use.

This dish has best results with a small slowcooker that fits the roast nicely with the onions, pepper strips and garlic stuffed around the sides and piled on top.

Tip: You can also make this in a dutch oven, same instructions, just cook on low heat all day.
Crockpot Rotisserie Chicken

Crockpot Recipe
This will make a nice chicken with a slightly crispy skin, not quite rotisserie crispy, but it’s still very good.

Ingredients:

Roasting Chicken
Seasonings (Lemon Pepper, Lemon Herb Blend, or your favorite Chicken Spices)
Lard (I use Tenderflake)

Directions:

* Wash the chicken inside and out thoroughly. Pat dry with paper towels. Rub in a light layer of lard all over the outside of the chicken, wings, legs and all. Sprinkle seasonings inside the chicken and outside (be generous).
* Wad up aluminum foil into balls, large enough for the chicken to sit on top of them yet not having the chicken touching the lid. I like to make them as high as I can since there is quite a bit of juice that accumulates at the bottom–I don’t like the chicken “simmering” in this. Arrange foil balls around the bottom of the crockpot, as many as you need to hold the chicken up (4 should do it).
* Place the chicken on the foil balls, breast side up.
* Cover the crockpot and cook on high for 6 to 7 hours, depending on the size of the chicken. Watch the juice level and if it gets high, use a turkey baster to remove some of it.

5 Ways To Make Peppermint Bark: {Recipes}

Posted By TipNut On November 26, 2010 @ 6:12 am In Recipes | 3 Comments

This is a very easy treat to make and it’s especially popular during the holidays since it looks so pretty and festive. Here’s the way I make peppermint bark (probably the most common, basic method) along with a few different twists that I’ve found around the net.

The Only Challenge When Making Peppermint Bark Is Not Eating The Whole Batch Yourself!
Simple Peppermint Bark Recipe

Ingredients:

* 1 cup of candy cane pieces or peppermint candies (you can smash into small pieces by placing candy in a plastic bag then pound with a kitchen mallet or heavy object)
* 2 pounds white chocolate
* 1 to 2 teaspoons peppermint extract (optional–gives a stronger peppermint flavor)

Directions:

* Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper & chill in refrigerator until needed.
* Slowly heat chocolate in a double boiler until it’s completely melted (stir often), see How To Melt Chocolate [1] for tips.
* Stir in the peppermint extract (if using) and then mix in candy pieces (reserve part of the candy to sprinkle over top of chocolate after you have spread it in pan).
* Pour mixture evenly onto chilled cookie sheet (use the back of a spoon to spread) and sprinkle with remaining candy pieces, then chill in the refrigerator for approximately 1 hour.
* Once fully chilled and the bark is hard, break into pieces. Store in an airtight container.

How To Jazz It Up A Bit

It’s Easy To Add Special Touches To Homemade Peppermint Bark

1. Peppermint Oreo Bark [2]: Features bits and pieces of oreo cookies among the peppermint candies in this version.
2. Double Layer Peppermint Bark [3]: Oh wow this is a treat, two layers of chocolate and candy pieces! The white chocolate is tinted a faint pink using red food coloring paste (optional).
3. Dark Chocolate Layered Bark [4]: Easy microwave recipe..the first layer is made with melted chocolate chips, chilled, then a layer of white chocolate and candy pieces.
4. Layered Peppermint Crunch Bark [5]: (no picture) Uses good quality chocolate (both white and dark), hard peppermint candies, some whipping cream and a bit of peppermint extract.

Free Gifts In A Jar Recipes, Tags & Tips

Posted By TipNut On November 30, 2010 @ 12:17 am In Popular Tips,Recipes | 5 Comments

[Updated For 2010 Holiday Season] Gifts in a jar typically include all the ingredients to make or bake something that are stored in jars (like mason jars or jam jars, etc.) and presented as gifts.

Gift Mixes In A Jar Can Be Quite Visually Appealing
They can be cookie mixes, cake mixes, bath & beauty ingredients (like bath salts [1] and foot soaks [2]), hearty soup mixes, bread, buns, pastry ingredients, seasoning mixes, hot beverage recipes (like Homemade Instant Cappuccino Mixes [3]), any recipe that will keep well in a jar pretty much works.

Sometimes the ingredients are all layered in the jar and this can look quite appealing if there’s some contrast between the colors, other times the recipe ingredients are fully mixed together before being placed in the jar.

After filling the jars, you can decorate the lids to look pretty and more festive. Make sure to include the list of ingredients and recipe directions for cooking or baking the mix or how to use the gift.

Here’s a collection of resources that share hundreds of free recipes for these lovely homemade gifts. I also added a few treats at the bottom for how to decorate the jar lids as well as some freebie printables (labels & tags for gifts in a jar).

Homemade Shampoo: {Recipes & Tips}

Posted By TipNut On November 29, 2010 @ 2:08 am In Beauty & Home Spa | 36 Comments

Looking for cheaper alternatives to washing your hair (or more natural)? I’ve moved the homemade shampoo recipes and tips into this page for better organization, enjoy!
Shampoo Bar Recipe

Make Homemade Shampoo Bars With This Recipe Tutorial Found At craftster.org

Shampoo Bar! (Recipe plus guide of sorts) [1]: First off, what is a shampoo bar? Quite simply it’s a bar of soap specially formulated for your hair. IMHO, you may use a shampoo bar on your body (I don’t because I like to make it last longer using it just on my hair), but you should not use a body bar on your hair. The reason is that shampoo bars are not only supposed to clean your hair, but also moisturize and condition your scalp.

With a good shampoo bar (*cough* yes, I throw this in that category, *cough*) you should not need a conditioner. Though for people who have really, really, really dry hair, or chemically abused hair, a conditioner will probably still be necessary. But for normal-oily folks, this is all you need!

Shampoo bars are becoming more popular in use since they are made from natural ingredients rather than harsh chemicals that many commercial shampoos contain. It does take a week or two for your hair to adjust to the different soap, so if you do try this method of washing your hair–make sure to give it some time before deciding whether or not this is the shampoo for you. Keep in mind that hair conditioner won’t be necessary, so there is some cost savings here too.

I haven’t tried these yet but I’ve come across many positive reviews (and they’re especially popular for traveling–no worries about shampoo leakage in your luggage), if you have any experience washing your hair with bars rather than liquid shampoo (doesn’t have to be with this recipe), please share your tips and experience in the comments area below–I’d love to hear them!
The No Shampoo Alternative

Try This Shampoo Alternative For Shiny Clean Hair

The No Shampoo Alternative – No Poo [2]: Almost three months ago, I was introduced to the idea of no longer using shampoo. I was intrigued. After looking into it somewhat, I figured I didn’t have anything to lose. So I picked up some baking soda and apple cider vinegar and then took the plunge.

I love the results! There was an adjustment period where I had to play around with the measurements a bit but I finally got the hang of it. I have straight-as-a-board, baby-fine hair that has never held a “do.” After “no ‘poo,” I don’t even have to use styling products. I just blow dry and go; my hair now keeps any style. It’s awesome!

To clean your hair without shampoo, the idea is to massage a baking soda and water paste into your scalp then rinse off with an apple cider vinegar & water rinse. The writer advises that there will be a transition period while your hair adjusts to being chemical free, but after that your hair looks wonderful!

Candy Cane Sugar Scrub Recipe

Candy Cane Sugar Scrub from naturalbeautyworkshop.com
Here’s a free recipe for Candy Cane Sugar Scrub [4], plus tips on scrubbing and preservation:

There are many scrubbing techniques out there, but this is one I am particularly fond of. Step into the shower and before turning the water on, scrub your body all over! (Of course, avoiding very sensitive areas or broken skin.) When you are thoroughly scrubbed, turn the shower on and rinse. When the shower is over, make sure to moisturize your skin with a body oil, cream, or lotion.

Visit the site to get the recipe and all the details, ingredients include:

* Shealoe Butter
* Granulated White Sugar
* Red Jojoba Wax Beads
* White Beeswax
* Peppermint Essential Oil or Fragrance Oil
