Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

This is a fantastic article explaining what sunflower seed to shop for, how to seperate the shells in large quantity, how to make an oil press, etc.

http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_library/oilpress.html

fascinating. I have considered growing sunflower seeds because of the superb animal feed. I figured I could allow my goats to forage the stalks and leaves after harvest and have seeds in hulls for both human and animal consumption to use as a concentrate. I always assumed that extracting the oil would be too time consuming on a small scale basis. I guess I was wrong! This makes and acre of sunflower look even more appealing! It looks as though the mighty sunflower deserves some serious consideration.

http://www.permies.com/permaculture-forums/989_0/general-homesteading/cheapfree-firestarting

World’s cheapest firestarter: junk mail with some grease or oil on it. The paper is the wick, the grease or oil is the fuel.

I’ve always had a can for grease that I kept in the refrigerator, mainly to keep it from going rancid, but also to keep it away from my dog and cats. They haven’t learned how to open the refrigerator yet.

So I just pick some junk mail out of the collection bucket, smear a spoonful of grease onto it, crumple the paper up, and put it in place with some twigs on top, and set it aflame. Works great.

Put your waste to work!

[Several fire starters on this page]

The house I’m in now has a great room with a wood stove. I’m about to build something where a six foot by 8 foot frame with clothesline gets pushed up next to the ceiling near the wood stove. I estimate that clothes will dry about four times faster there.

I was interested and got impatient and found it. Here’s the link: http://www.lehmans.com/store/Home_Goods___Laundry___Drying___Space_Saving_Laundry_Airer___1055315?Args=

The ones I glanced at were booklets from the government. Not bad at all. Fairly basic, and not with a whole lot of new ideas, but they save having to buy books that include the same info.

Thanks!

What is WWOOF?

WWOOF is a world wide network - It started in the UK in 1971 and has since become an international movement that is helping people share more sustainable ways of living.

WWOOF is an exchange - In return for volunteer help, WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles.

WWOOF organisations link people who want to volunteer on organic farms or smallholdings with people who are looking for volunteer help.

How does it work?

WWOOF organisations publish lists of organic farms, smallholdings and gardeners that welcome volunteer help at certain times. The diversity of hosts available offers a large variety of tasks and experiences.

Volunteer helpers (”WWOOFers”) choose the hosts that most interest them and make direct contact to arrange a stay. Volunteers usually live as part of the family.

“A primary bulwark against foreclosures and destitution is about to give way. Almost 500,000 Americans will exhaust their unemployment insurance benefits by September. That includes 354,000 for that month alone. The economic consequences will be severe. Social unrest is inevitable.”

On Fox News tonight they predicted that half of all mortgages will be “under water” (the balance due will be more than the value of the house) by 2011 (I think that was the year).

I wonder how many will try to sign up for Obama’s “volunteer” force.

This is very frightening.

Homeland Security Today – Savage Struggle On The Border

August 7, 2009 by national

A raging war between rival drug cartels in Mexico, the rise of Islamist Extremism in Latin America, and an alliance between Jihadists, Drug Cartels and Latino Street Gangs all contribute to a unique, and potentially very dangerous scenario on our Southern Border.

Anthony Kimery from Homeland Security Today has put together an incredible, in-depth news report that clearly illustrates the dangers and risks we face.

Read The Articles At Homeland Security Today

Included in This Special Report:

Savage Struggle On The Border

In Northern Mexico a largely overlooked but nonetheless brutal war is raging between Narco-terrorists and government authorities and it’s violence threatens to spread to the united states.

The Rise of Islamist Extremism in Latin America

“This network … did not spring up overnight,” states the report of Operation Cazando Anguilas, a study commissioned by the US Office of Secretary of Defense to explore the nexus of terrorists, transnational criminal organizations and Mexican narco-cartels in Latin America. “Rather, it arose as a byproduct of a long history of Muslim involvement in the region.”

Unholy Trinity

South of the American border, three transnational threats are coming together in an alliance of convenience and mutual support that may present A danger to the American homeland.

Revealing the Threat

In May 2003, the Senate Committee on the Judiciary hearing, “Narco-Terrorism: International Drug Trafficking and Terrorism—A Dangerous Mix,” took a hard, cold look at the problem. The nearly 1-inch thick fine print transcript of the hearing documented Hezbollah and other Middle East terrorist organizations’ undeniable presence in the region

Honduras: A beachhead for narco-cartels and Islamist terrorists

While Latin America’s socialist governments have condemned the Honduran military for its June 28 ousting of President Manuel Zelaya in response to Zelaya’s questionable moves to usurp the nation’s constitution, intelligence shows that counter-narcotics and counterterrorism authorities had been investigating the Zelaya regime’s ties to Mexico’s narco-cartels … and terrorists.

So that is where the missing money in the gov is going!!!

LOL, the ‘o’ said he was creating jobs, and you found them.

I keep thinking of the russian takeovers, how they moved the native people to Russia and replaced them with Russians, so they would have a built in voter base, which we still see today.

It is all right out of the takeover handbook, so fully communist and I can almost hear the roar of the tanks as they enter our towns.

When it sinks in to the market’s consciousness - we had two failed Treasury Auctions last week, both 5 and 7 year, yet we intend to try to borrow ANOTHER $400 billion next quarter and nearly $100 billion this coming week - the consequences could be extremely severe.<<<

That is as scary as it can get.

http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Internet_Access

TheFreeSite.com:

Free Internet access providers

Despite the flurry of stories in the media lately about the supposed decline of freebies and free services on the Web, we’ve found that Net users today in fact have a broader range of freebies to choose from than ever before. The one exception to this is the category of free Internet access providers.
The number of free Web access providers has declined sharply in recent years, as the industry has seen a number of players consolidate or go out of business. However, there are still a number of free ISPs in the U.S. (although most providers no longer offer free, unlimited usage). And free Net access providers continue to thrive in other countries, particularly in Europe.
We don’t recommend any of these services for use as your primary Web connection, if you need solid, reliable service. Still, the free services reviewed below are handy for use as a backup service, if your primary provider experiences downtime. They also provide a convenient way for you to get online, if you’re on the road.
Please send us E-mail if you find dead or expired listings, or if you’re aware of any free Net access providers that we haven’t listed below and we’ll consider them for a listing.

All Free ISP
In the aftermath of the Dot Com crash, most national free Internet access providers went bust. However, there are still many free local ISPs around in the U.S. and Canada. This site offers a searchable database of free ISPs, complete with reviews and ratings. Besides free services, the site also takes a look at discount ISPs.

Freedomlist
Are you looking for a free (or a low-cost) Internet service provider? A useful resource, Freedomlist reviews nearly 700 free and low-cost ISPs from 50 countries. Each listing includes a description of the service, as well as users’ comments. The site also includes a forum about various ISP issues.

DialUpForFree. com
Here, you can sign up for free unlimited dial-up Internet access service. No credit card or personal information is required. Service is available for Windows and Mac computers. (U.S. only).

Free Internet
This directory is a good place to go if you’re looking for a free or inexpensive Internet access provider. The site offers a searchable database of almost 400 ISPs from 50 countries.

CDotFree.com
This site offers free, ad-supported 56K dial-up Internet access service for Windows users. (Canada only).

MyFreeISP.co. uk
This service offers anonymous, speedy and reliable free dial-up Internet access for U.K. residents. It’s suitable for people who surf the Web occasionally (or who travel frequently on business). You simply connect to the Internet from any U.K. landline via an 0845 number.(U.K. only).

Free-Dial
This service offers free unlimited Internet access for people in Britain. Free-Dial features non-contended dial-up service and supports both Windows and Mac operating systems. (U.K. only).

Aardvaak free Net access
Here’s a free ISP for our British visitors. Aardvaak offers speedy 0845 (local rate) dial-up Internet access, with free POP3 E-mail and 25 megs of Web space. The service supports 56K and 64/128K ISDN. What’s more, Aardvaak doesn’t pester you with banners or popup ads. (U.K. only). Works with both Windows and Macs.

NoCharge.com
This site offers free dial-up 56K Internet access service for people in western Washington state, as well as parts of New England.

NetZero
NetZero offers you up to 10 hours per month of free Net access in exchange for displaying ad space in your browser. They support 56K FLEX and V90 modem standards. They provide local access numbers to most major and many medium-sized cities in the U.S. Note: to sign up for service here, scroll down the page and look for the “Free Internet Access” link. U.S. only. (For Windows).

Our visitors report a number of problems these days with NetZero, including difficulties in connecting; frequent sudden disconnects; lots of E-mail advertisements; and annoying pop-up ads.

Juno
One of the two major players still offering free Net access in the U.S. (along with NetZero), Juno offers service at connection speeds up to 56K. The service is advertisement- supported.

We’ve had a few complaints from our visitors about Juno’s difficult-to- close, obtrusive ad windows.

In recent months, it’s become increasingly difficult to connect to Juno’s free service during normal business hours. If you need a steady day-time Net connection, you’ll have to look elsewhere for a free ISP.

FreeSpot Directory
This handy directory serves up an up-to-date roundup of WiFi hotspot locations that offer free wireless Internet access. Most of the listings here are in the U.S., but there are also listings for locations in Canada, Europe, Asia and elsewhere.

CDC Guidance for State and Local Public Health Officials and School Administrators for School (K-12) Responses to Influenza

This document provides guidance to help decrease the spread of flu among students and school staff during the 2009-2010 school year. This document expands upon earlier school guidance documents by providing a menu of tools that school and health officials can choose from based on conditions in their area. It recommends actions to take this school year and suggests strategies to use if CDC finds that the flu starts causing more severe disease. The guidance also provides a checklist for making decisions at the local level. Detailed information on the reasons for these strategies and suggestions on how to use them is included in the Technical Report. Based on the severity of 2009 H1N1 flu-related illness thus far, this guidance also recommends that students and staff with influenza-like illness remain home until 24 hours after resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications.

For more information on H1N1 situation, please visit http://www.Flu.gov

CDC Recommendations on Self-Quarantine

August 6, 2009

CDC Updates Recommendations for the Amount of Time

Persons with Influenza-Like Illness should be Away from Others

On August 5, 2009, CDC changed its recommendation related to the amount of time people with influenza-like illness should stay away from others (the exclusion period). New guidance indicates that people with influenza-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medicine). A fever is defined as having a temperature of 100° Fahrenheit or 37.8° Celsius or greater.

This is a change from the previous recommendation that ill persons stay home for 7 days after illness onset or until 24 hours after the resolution of symptoms, whichever was longer. The new recommendation applies to camps, schools, businesses, mass gatherings, and other community settings where the majority of people are not at increased risk for influenza complications. CDC recommends this exclusion period regardless of whether or not antiviral medications are used. This guidance does not apply to health care settings where the exclusion period continues to be for 7 days from symptom onset or until 24 hours after the resolution of symptoms, whichever is longer.

Decisions about extending the exclusion period should be made at the community level, in conjunction with local and state health officials. More stringent guidelines and longer periods of exclusion – for example, until complete resolution of all symptoms – may be considered for people returning to a setting where high numbers of high-risk people may be exposed.

This exclusion period guidance for the community setting is based on epidemiologic data about the overall risk of severe illness and death. The new recommendation attempts to balance the risks of acquiring illness from influenza and the potential benefits of decreasing transmission through the exclusion of ill persons with the goal of minimizing social disruption. This guidance will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

You are welcome, glad to hear from you.

It takes different subjects to add up to ‘survival’, LOL and different subjects abound here.

Would your Sister like to have a tiny 3 legged kitty? It is a special baby, trained in one day and has no real problems with the missing leg, except when he tries to hit is brother and never feels the contact.

2 bull dogs killed the mother and when I found the baby the leg was gone, I suspect the bull dogs, as I did not find the other 2 kittens.

So I must find homes for Purrrr Baby and the normal bored and into everything that I call Mr. Trouble....LOL, except that I have not had time to check the sex, going by personality.

Window Farming

Window Farms are vertical, hydroponic, modular, low-energy, high-yield edible window
gardens built using low-impact or recycled local materials.

In February 2009, through a residency at Eyebeam, Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray
began to build and test the first Window Farms prototype.

Growing food inside NY

apartments is a challenge, but within reach. The foundational knowledge base is
emerging through working with agricultural, architectural and other specialists,
collecting sensor data, and reinterpreting hydroponics research conducted by NASA
scientists.

Flint, Michigan considers ordinance changes to enhance urban agriculture

It’s not that Flint officials are opposed to residents growing their own food in
backyards or on nearly 2,800 vacant residential lots within the city limits (a
list that’s still growing to the tune of about 500 vacant lots per year).
The problem is the laws on the books simply predate the city’s new urban reality.

Self-sufficient Foodie - Bill Tall, founder of City Farmer’s Nursery

It might be hard for the average grower, but Bill Tall, founder of City Farmer’s
Nursery in City Heights, produces about 80 percent of his food. And still, he isn’t
satisfied. Tall is planning for an entire year without groceries.

To walk across
his nursery, which connects to the land surrounding his home, is to stumble into
a wonderland of gardening ideas. Though his business allows him three acres of
land to produce food on, most of his projects can be geared to a small, backyard
environment. Or even an indoor one.

Vancouver Personal Chef teaches canning

“I teach wherever people need to have a class, i.e., community kitchens, and in
private homes. I have also taught in cooking stores. My next scheduled class is
at Richmond Family Place, in late August. I’ve also had small classes at my home
in Yaletown.

Vancouver’s 6 Acre Living Roof

“The roof of the Vancouver BC Convention Centre is covered with over 2.5 hectares
(6 acres) of native grassland. Usually closed to the public, we were able to get
a tour and interview with the landscape architect of the project, Bruce Hemstock.

Guernica magazine reports - Food Among the Ruins

“There are more visionaries in Detroit than in most Rust-Belt cities, and thus more
visions of a community rising from the ashes of a moribund industry to become, if
not an urban paradise, something close to it. The most intriguing visionaries in
Detroit, at least the ones who drew me to the city, were those who imagine growing
food among the ruins-chard and tomatoes on vacant lots (there are over 103,000 in
the city, sixty thousand owned by the city), orchards on former school grounds,
mushrooms in open basements, fish in abandoned factories, hydroponics in bankrupt
department stores.

Truck Farm, a film by Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney. Episodes 1 and 2 are now complete
and on the web.

“We’ve combined green roof technology, organic compost, and heirloom seeds to create
a living, mobile garden on the streets of Brooklyn, NY. A solar-powered timelapse
camera will monitor the crop’s progress throughout the summer, and every month we’ll
release a short excerpt from the film - and with any luck a bunch of very local
produce.”
