Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Granny, Granny, Granny. Didn’t you know that the sand polishes your teeth. Told two of my children that continuously, to no avail. They still refuse to eat anything with clams in it. Have a son who refuses fish of any type as he maintains that if there is a bone anywhere it will end up in his plate.

DelaWhere, I think this is the year we have been waiting for so looooong. No drought, or tomato blight, the bugs seem to be held at bay, woodchucks hungry but deterred by red pepper. Warned all the neighbors about locking their garage doors. Have been leaving bags of zucchini in unlocked garages. Nobody sick of cukes or green beans yet, so don’t have to sneak them into garages, just hand them out. Tomatoes not ripe yet,but the plants are nearly as tall as I am and loaded with fruit. One good year in 10-15 is what keeps us old-timers planting every year.

LOL, guess that is what makes Mainers so tough...

Fortunately we are on a 3-4 year cycle here - (people are not as resilient here)

I’m really glad to hear you are getting the yields you were hoping for - I remember last year when you weren’t sure if you were going to even plant a garden...

Hope the golfer/vacationer in chief didn’t disrupt things too much up there with visit to Acadia...

Not much news here about our renowned vacationer-in-chief. However Pres. G. H. W. Bush made quite a splash (pun intended) when he was piloting Fidelity IV near Kennebunk Beach, hit a rogue wave and landed high and dry on the beach among hordes of vacationers. Secret Service following in their rubber boat not happy. Saving face for Bush was the fact that other boats got caught in same rogue vawe and landed high and dry also.
