Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Helsinki’s rabbit wild situation has reached the point where the little furry creatures
are now being hunted by any means necessary, especially in residential districts
with gardens to protect.<<<

From post 6655:

It did not say if they were going in the stewpot, but I am betting yes.

Last night, I managed to get 640 AM radio in California, and they had a news broadcast that said “ People have been dumping their unwanted Bunnies at the University campus.

California is catching them, spaying and neutering them and putting them up for adoption............again.

There is now a big fine for dumping your Easter Bunnies....

Why did they not kill, dress and donate the meat to the homeless shelters?

The state is bankrupt and yet, they spay and neuter RABBITS!!!!

Coming up for those rabbits, an implanted chip so they can tell whose rabbit it is and who to collect money from.

This world has gone insane in my opinion.

Monday
How to Make Organic Soap Using Soapwort

There are a number of great concoctions for using soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), and you can find many recipes on the web. When I was in college, my Godmother shared her recipe with me. She lived in California and kept lots of herbs on her property. She used her soapwort liquid soap solution to clean her lace tablecloths and lace curtains, much the way her mother had done before her. Soapwort is also a very effective shampoo if you want something really gentle for problem hair.

She maintained her soapwort as far away from her koi pond as she could. Soapwort wreaks havoc with aquatic environments, so placing it away from your populated water feature is a good idea.

The two recipes I’m including here are very simple. You can embellish them as you see fit. I’ve added lavender to soapwort solution for washing fine handkerchiefs and included lemon juice to lighten stains on fabric. I’ve never had a problem, but to be safe, test an area of the material you plan on washing.

If you plan on using soapwort soap for general cleaning, you might consider buying a foamy pump sprayer. Some herb outlets carry them to help increase the foaming action and overall effectiveness of soapwort. To be honest, I just use a plain old economy sprayer, but it with a couple of shakes, it creates a lather and to works fine.

Soapwort Liquid Soap Recipe

2 Cups of chopped soapwort leaves and stems (1 cup dried)
1 Quart distilled water

Add soapwort leaves to boiling water and cover the pan.

* Continue simmering for fifteen minutes.

* Remove from the heat and cool.

* Strain through cheesecloth.

* Include any additives.

You can keep the liquid up to a week in the refrigerator.

Soapwort Shampoo

Soapwort shampoo is a little less concentrated than the all-purpose cleaner.

3 Tablespoons fresh soapwort (1 tablespoon dried)
1 Cup water (distilled)

Follow boiling directions above. You can easily make three or four batches at a time.

Notes

Soapwort is not for internal use: Not that you drink your soap, but if you’re planning on shampooing your dog with soapwort - don’t. Any residue left on his fur would be lapped up the next time he grooms himself. There are online sites that recommend soapwort as a mild alternative to pet shampoo, but I never use it that way.

Distilled Water: You can substitute filtered water for the distilled water if you’re using soapwort solution as a general cleanser. Distilling water removes any chemicals, like metals and bacteria. For a pure and wholesome cleaner, go the extra step and use the distilled stuff if you can (just my two cents worth). You can buy a half gallon cheap at most grocery stores.

For a facial and hand soap, use the weaker concentration. With regular use, it’s supposed to help with itchy skin and mild acne.

Some neat soapwort additives: Lemon Juice (for mild bleaching), lavender water, lemon balm, peppermint oil, crushed rosemary leaves.

Sunday
Make Lavender Liquid Hand Soap

Lavender Soap Bubbles
This season I’d like to add occasional tips about using herbs to make common household chores and activities more pleasant, eco-friendly or inexpensive. Over the years, I’ve tried lots of ways to incorporate herbs into my daily life. Some have worked and some . . . well, not so much. One thing I have learned is that herbs can make me feel that I lead a more graceful existence, whether I’m using them to make something time intensive, like a candle, or something easy, like adding fragrance to soap. This last is my offering today. I use liquid soap around the house via dispensers that I refill with 64 oz. bulk liquid soap from the market.

After using generic liquid hand soap for a while, I decided that it was gloppy and smelled bland. To get more value for the purchase and give it an individual stamp, I add around 30 percent distilled water to the mixture. This makes the soap less viscous and gives me more volume. When I’m adding the water, I put in about 25 drops of lavender essential oil. The oil smells wonderful and has relaxing properties too. I buy scentless soap, but on occasion I’ve used antibacterial varieties. Antibacterial soap typically doesn’t have a fragrance, but it’s a lurid orange that’s hard to love. I put a few sprigs of lavender in the dispensers to liven them up too.

If you’d like to give this method a try, you can find lavender essential oil, or another herb fragrance you enjoy, like rose or geranium, at any craft supply outlet.

This is admittedly a small change, but put a few of them together and you’ll be filling your life with the fragrances and textures of herbs year round. You’ll also be saving money and making some eco-friendly choices that will keep your family, property and planet safer.

Special Note: A container of distilled water will last for months, and you can easily use it for other herb related projects.

Sunday
Sweet Woodruff is a Delicate Addition to Your Garden

Woodruff Ground Cover Sweet Woodruff is a beautiful little herb with delicate leaves that grow in tight whorls. It makes an attractive groundcover, and has the reputation of being invasive, but it’s shallow rooted so easily kept in check. It grows best in shade, but will tolerate a sunny spot if kept moist. It makes a nice presentation under a larger shrub like a hydrangea. It’s also a natural for your azalea bed. Sweet Woodruff likes acidic soil, and responds well if mulched with garden leaves in the fall.

Woodruff tastes a bit like a mixture of cinnamon and chamomile, and its leaves have traditionally been added to Rhine and May wines as a sweet flavoring. Try adding two large sprigs of woodruff to two cups of white wine, then add two tablespoons of honey and leave the mixture for at least a day. Drink it over ice or as a spritzer.
Woodruff is also a favorite ingredient in potpourri, and it can be added to dried wreaths and swags. For a sweet smelling insect repellent, make sachets of sweet woodruff to place with stored linen. Woodruff can also add fragrance to your bath.

Natural Pain Relief From White Willow Bark

Natural Asprin Relief Willow bark has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years and has chemical properties that are being tested for their immune boosting, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pain reducing capabilities. It is widely known as the aspirin herb, because it contains salicin, an aspirin like chemical.

The use of willow bark for the treatment of pain and inflammation has been traced back to 400 BC, and it is sold today as a natural herbal remedy for headache, lower back pain, fever, and arthritis. It is also sometimes recommended for flu, bursitis, and menstrual cramps. Although it shares many characteristics in common with aspirin and has many of aspirin’s side effects, it may have advantages over aspirin in that its effects may be more long lasting.

White willow is commonly known as European willow, a deciduous tree found in North America, Asia, and Europe.

How Do you Take White Willow Bark

Willow bark is available in capsule form and loose for infusions in tea. For a medicinal tea, boil one to two teaspoons of bark in eight ounces of water and let steep for ten minutes.

When You Shouldn’t Take White Willow Bark

White willow bark is not recommended if you are under 16, pregnant, or nursing. Any change in medication should be discussed with your physician.

White Willow Bark and Your Pets

Although aspirin and white willow bark are poisonous to your cat, there are instances where white willow bark has been used successfully as a pain treatment for dogs. Follow the link for more information: Willow Bark and Your Pets.

As with any medication, consult your veterinarian before attempting to diagnose or treat your dog.

Historical Reference to Willow

In the 1600s Culpepper advocated willow bark for a number of ailments: “to stanch bleeding of wounds, and at mouth and nose, spitting of blood, and other fluxes of blood in both man and woman, and to stay vomiting...” He promised it would keep one thin, remove warts, and cure “dandriff”, and also that it “stays the heat of lust in man or woman, and quite extinguishes it, if it long be used,” and that if one boils the leaves or bark in wine, he might “drink as much as you will, so you drink yourself not drunk.”

Modern medicine discounts many of these claims.

Note: Common Poisons and Your Pets

While we are talking about pets, please remember that any aspirin-like substance can kill your cat, and chocolate, onions, avocado and macadamia nuts are toxic to your dog. Please be careful so your pets can be healthy members of your family for many years.

Tuesday
Comfrey in the Garden

Photo of Growing ComfreyAs a medicinal herb, comfrey (Symphytum officinale) was so prized that it was called “knitbone” and “bruisewort” as a tribute to its miraculous healing powers.

Although there are modern concerns about taking comfrey internally, it is still recommended as an external preparation for skin problems, cuts, sprains, burns, and to reduce swelling. Comfrey’s leaves and root have a cornucopia of useful substances like allantoin, which encourages cell regeneration, vitamin B12, potassium, calcium, phosphorous, along with vitamins A and C, and in many countries it is used to supplement livestock feed.

Growing Comfrey

Comfrey needs full sun and nitrogen rich soil. It can send out a taproot many feet long and be very invasive if not contained. Comfrey also needs room to spread out, so place young plants at least three feet apart, and fertilize with quality manure in spring and again in late summer.

Propagating Comfrey

Propagate comfrey from sections of root that contain a growing tip or from seeds that have been chilled to approximate winter conditions.

Harvesting Comfrey

Dry leaves and flowering tops in summer and dig up comfrey roots at the end of the growing season in the fall.

Uses for Comfrey

A comfrey poultice can help speed healing, relieve aching joints, reduce swelling and inflammation, and treat skin conditions like eczema. Its high potassium content makes it a good addition to fertilizer, and it can be used to make a natural brown fabric dye.

Comfrey makes a unique and interesting fill in plant for a barren spot in the garden. It may well be the king of historical medicinal herbs, and has uses today as a home remedy. Even its appearance has nostalgic appeal. Its lavender flowers are bell shaped and delicate, contrasting well with comfrey’s hairy leaves.

Give comfrey a try if you can find it at your nursery or online herb supplier; it’s a great conversation piece. Oh, and the next time you sprain your ankle maneuvering your way around your flowerbeds, grab some comfrey for the swelling and discomfort. It’s the gardener’s secret friend.

Audience: Consumers, Pharmacists

Natural Wellness and FDA notified consumers that MasXtreme, a product sold as a dietary supplement contains aildenafil close in structure to sildenafil and is expected to possess a similar pharmacological and adverse event profile as well as the drug phentolamine which is an alpha-adrenergic blocker. This may pose a threat to consumers because aildenafil may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. Common side effects of phentolamine include arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) and tachycardia (rapid heart beat).

MasXtreme is sold in blister packs containing one (1) capsule. The product is distributed nationwide by Natural Wellness Inc. Consumers who have purchased MasXtreme capsules are urged to immediately discontinue their use.

Any adverse events that may be related to use should be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program online [at www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm], by phone 1-800-332-1088, or by returning the postage-paid FDA form 3500 [which may be downloaded from the MedWatch “Download Forms” page] by mail [to address on the pre-addressed form] or fax [1-800-FDA-0178].

I would really like to keep in touch with like minded folks but have some reservations about divulging personal information like that that would compromise my screen name.<<<

It is ok with me, and I use only a Yahoo email, have never used any of the mailboxes that came with my internet connection account. LOL, don’t even recall the address unless I run across that 13 year old piece of paper it is written on.

My thanks to Dolly Cali for taking this project on, for I would hate to loose contact with all of you.

I am truly fearful for our republic. My Christian Faith sustains me & my love of God’s creation & the healthful cures/foods/provision are encouraging for/to me, aren’t they for you?

God is sovereign... but we also must do our part to survive.<<<

Thank you for taking care of this project, all of you are such fine folks, I would miss never hearing from you again.

pets/some family info.. this of course is optional & just a way for us to become better acquainted.<<<

You are creating a book....and lots of work.

Thanks for doing it for us, we will all benefit from the knowing of each other better.

So, is this the one they want to mix with the regular seasonal flu vaccine to give everyone one shot instead of two?

Would this be the way of using leftover vaccine before its expiration date so they can make money off it instead of having to throw it out?<<<

I would guess it is both of above.

I did notice on a Las Vegas news alert today, there was a line that said they were not out of the flu danger season as yet.

My fear is that with them mixed, folks with lung problems will be given them, when they are not paying attention and it will kill a few people.

Follow the money....works every time.

I eagerly undertook to stand in South Florida during the Cuban/Russian missile crisis facing their nuclear weapons... I did not feel the deep resentment nor helplessness that Barack Obama instills now.

So, I ask, is it just me or are others feeling similarly?<<<

YES!!!!

He is in the leaders chair and will do all he can to put in ways to take us over, as quick as he can.

Even if he were forced out of office early, it will take years to reverse all he has done.

My sister is getting an opinion, on doing breast surgery today, they have found a growth, so please join me in prayers for her, for she is scared ....

I did notice on a Las Vegas news alert today, there was a line that said they were not out of the flu danger season as yet.

My daughter got the swine flu back in Nov from exposure to someone with a confirmed case of it. She was just considering getting the vaccine as that was the time the big push for it was on.

And just as the *panic* was peaking out, the swine flu just seemed to disappear off the radar. The big epidemic they were expecting just seemed to vanish on its own. And we haven't heard spit about it since.

The only way they're going to get rid of the vaccine is to convince people that the danger isn't over and play on their fears.

http://www.theepicenter.com/freeze_dried_and_dehydrated.html

Looks good to me and they do offer the sample and small paks, so one can taste what they plan on ordering.

Thanks for sharing the link.

I use the dehydrated foods on a regular basis, they work for me.
