Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)
Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no creature comforts. But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor hes called home for the last three years.
To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesnt need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, its an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Back when I ordered the herbs from AmeriHerb,(a few months ago) I got three things that I had researched - Mullein leaf, Ursa Uvi and licorice root. I had read quite a bit about it - it was used to treat TB victims to help solve their breathing/coughing problems, and it was used by the Indians to treat lung congestion too.<<<
That may be the cigarettes sold by the drugstore in Wellton, during the 1920’s/30’s, Mary has often said she wished they were still for sale, for they worked, but she did not remember what was in them.
LOL, I figured they were marijuana, for several of the indians, LOL the real ones, used it for healing and not for party time.
I don’t know if I can still roll a cigarette or not, been a lot of years since I tried.
I am so glad that it is working for you and will do some checking on it too in some of the old books.
You picked a good day for telling me about them, don’t know what was wrong, but it was a rough day, back to my average self all of a sudden about an hour ago.
Thank you for taking on this ‘keep in contact’ project, it will keep you busy for a while.
Do you feel up to tackling a double list, one with the home address and the other for those who need to keep the home out of the public eye, and need to exchange email addresses only?
I can understand the feeling of not letting folks know where you live, 5 or 6 years ago, I would not have done so, today it does not matter that much.
Let me know about the second version....please. LOL

Thank you for hosting it and allowing it to be down loaded.
Not a word from Eagle or Vicky, yes, I am worried about them.
why? not sure we can trust our govt any longer to be assured we will have this thread or any internet access. are we paranoid? HELL YES
I hope we would have an avenue to keep contact.<<<
You covered it well.
I have answered your concern for privacy, in the post above this, as I can understand the needs for it.
We will figure out a way to cover it.
For me the beauty of it is that so many of you care enough about each other to keep in contact.
I pray God will bless and keep each one of you safe and happy.
Thanks for that.
Before anything is sent to all, I will be sending via FR or Email (blind copy) a follow up note. I will only offer to all participating what you want to share. This will be a small group & I wont include anyone who just joins FR etc. Most of us have been around for some time
For now I thought of a few more things to add..
Facebook name (if you are on FB) and the link so we can “friend” each other.
pets/some family info.. this of course is optional & just a way for us to become better acquainted.
In my note to you I will offer all my things & you can see the format it will be in.
If you want to add more you can email or FR me.
I have a LOT of concern about what might happen with the govt the way it is going now & the conservative (terrorists that we are?) sites. I dont trust BO one bit nor the thugs he has running things
I have info from all in the TO above except metmom... I will do the mailing maybe Tuesday of next week with a reminder NOTE possibly on Monday for those who didn’t get around to it yet.

Dear Dollmaking Friends,
Bonnie writes: Every month I put a new flag in front of my home, along
with a door hanging or wreath and a series of seasonal dolls in my
entry foyer. In January I put out my traditional snow flag with
children sledding, and a blue and silver wreath covered with sparkly
snowflakes. Snowmen and several Father Times were scattered throughout
the house. Usually when I display this flag it guarantees that we will
have a LITTLE snow. Unfortunately, the flag worked too well this year
(we had 52” of snow in less than a week), so I replaced it in February
with a naked cupid flag I made along with a series of stuffed hearts
sewn to a coat hanger shaped in a circle for the front door. There
were also several Queen of Hearts dolls, a doll with a basket of
cherries and cherry dress commemorating George Washington, cupid
bears, paper cutouts of Victorian lovers, etc. (The snow didn’t take
the hint!) In March I put out my Leprechaun doll holding a pot of
gold, my Kelly Doll for All Seasons, along with a Leprechaun peering
over a shamrock flag I made. I discovered that the grapevine wreath I
created years ago for this month had died, so I sat down and crafted a
front door display from things I found in my sewing room.
I took the sculpting wire we sell and created a huge shamrock shape
(20” x 20”). I then wrapped the wire in green floral tape. I took
fuzzy green chenille netting, stretched it to fit the petals, and
sewed it in place. I then covered the stem with the netting, sewed
crinkled gold trim around the leaves, and made a huge gold bow to
cover where the leaves and stem meet. It now proudly hangs on my front
door. It is amazing what a little time and a lot of imagination can
create.
I bought 11 large clear storage containers (Easter, Thanksgiving, and
Halloween were twice as big as the other months) and labeled each with
a different month. (December has so many boxes that it didn’t need one
of these.) Each month I take down a different box which contains a
flag, door hanging (unless it is so large it is stored separately),
assorted dolls and decorations suitable for that month. It is fun to
see old friends that I made many years ago, and my grandchildren love
to see the changes to Grandma’s house each time they visit. We hope
this gives you ideas to store and display the things you make and
collect.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Earth Day!
Bonnie and Mary Ann

malicious code may be installed on the user’s system.
US-CERT encourages users to take the following preventative measures
to help mitigate the security risks:
* Do not follow unsolicited web links and do not open unsolicited
email messages.
* Maintain up-to-date antivirus software.
* Use caution when visiting untrusted websites.

US-CERT Current Activity
US Tax Season Phishing Scams and Malware Campaigns
Original release date: March 26, 2010 at 10:21 am
Last revised: March 26, 2010 at 10:21 am
In the past, US-CERT has received reports of an increased number of
phishing scams and malware campaigns that take advantage of the United
States tax season. Due to the upcoming tax deadline, US-CERT reminds
users to remain cautious when receiving unsolicited email that could
be part of a potential phishing scam or malware campaign.
These phishing scams and malware campaigns may include the following:
information that refers to a tax refund, warnings about unreported or
under-reported income, offers to assist in filing for a refund, or
details about fake e-file websites. These messages, which appear to be
from the IRS, may ask users to submit personal information via email
or may instruct the user to follow a link to a website that requests
personal information or contains malicious code.
At this time, US-CERT is aware of public reports indicating that there
is active circulation of a tax season malware campaign. This malware
campaign may be using malicious code commonly known as Zeus or Zbot.
US-CERT encourages users and administrators to take the following
measures to protect themselves from these types of phishing scams and
malware campaigns:
* Do not follow unsolicited web links in email messages.
* Maintain up-to-date antivirus software.
* Refer to the IRS website related to phishing, email, and bogus
website scams for scam samples and reporting information.
* Refer to the Recognizing and Avoiding Email Scams (pdf) document
for more information on avoiding email scams.

2009 H1N1 Influenza Vaccine with Long-Dated Expiration Questions and Answers
March 24, 2009, 3:35 PM EDT
Background
Unlike seasonal influenza vaccine which typically expires on June 30th, the 2009 H1N1 monovalent influenza vaccine expiration dates range from February 2010 to early 2011. Sanofi Pasteur multi-dose vials (MDV), specifically, have expiration dates in 2011. Additional 2009 H1N1 influenza activity (i.e. “third wave”) is possible through spring and summer of 2010, or in early fall 2010 when the 2010-11 trivalent influenza vaccine is not yet available. Although the 2010-11 seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine will contain a 2009 H1N1-like influenza A strain, the timing of its production and availability is not yet known.
The purpose of this document is to address questions raised by the long-expiry vaccine.
How should grantees handle Sanofi Pasteur 2009 H1N1 vaccine that expires next year?
Viable 2009 H1N1 Sanofi Pasteur MDV should not be destroyed until 2010-11 seasonal vaccine (which will contain 2009 H1N1 strain) is widely available. It should be stored in the event there is a resurgence of disease before the 2010-2011 vaccine is available.
Should the long-dated 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine be used instead of 2010-2011 seasonal influenza vaccine?
The 2010-2011 seasonal vaccine will contain two other strains in addition to the 2009 H1N1 strain. For this reason the 2009 H1N1monovalent vaccine will not be considered a substitute for the seasonal trivalent vaccine. It would only be used in the event of a resurgence in disease before the 2010-2011 seasonal vaccine is widely available.
What should grantees do with excess viable 2009 H1N1 monovalent vaccine?
Grantees should identify a way of storing viable vaccine in the event of a resurgence of 2009 H1N1 disease before the 2010-2011 trivalent vaccine is widely available. Because providers may want to free up their refrigerator storage, states may choose to accept vaccine back from providers if vaccine viability and cold chain integrity can be assured. States must review provider temperature logs for vaccine while in their possession to ensure that the vaccine has been properly stored before accepting this vaccine back from providers.
Can unused or expired 2009 H1N1 monovalent vaccine be sent back to McKesson?
Unused or expired vaccine should not be sent back to McKesson.
How long should grantees plan to store the long-dated 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine?
At a minimum, grantees should plan to store such vaccine until seasonal vaccine distribution is well underway. The time at which sufficient supply can be assured is difficult to predict given year to year variations. Distribution of seasonal influenza vaccine by manufacturers will be monitored by CDC and CDC expects to issue a recommendation that stored vaccine no longer needs to be kept once available information indicates a robust supply, in order to minimize confusion about which flu vaccine (2010-11 trivalent vaccine versus 2009 H1N1 monovalent vaccine) should be administered
.
What should grantees say to providers about current vaccination efforts?
CDC recommends direct communication with health care providers and retailers to continue to encourage vaccination of people with high risk conditions. As part of this communication, CDC recommends that state health departments request that retailers, pharmacies, and healthcare providers retain their unexpired 2009 H1N1 vaccine supplies as a reserve, should demand for vaccination increase before seasonal vaccine becomes available
Can PHER funds be used to cover vaccine storage?
PHER funds can be used for storage until July 30, 2010, but at this time there is no carry over authority for PHER funds past July 30, 2010. Grantees will be kept informed of any changes to this policy.
So, is this the one they want to mix with the regular seasonal flu vaccine to give everyone one shot instead of two?
Would this be the way of using leftover vaccine before its expiration date so they can make money off it instead of having to throw it out?
I am wondering if any others are feeling the same level of tension/apprehension over Washington’s latest actions as I am?
There seem to be way more questions than there are answers.
We refuse to allow drilling for known existing oil here in the States (even with prices rocketing back up) - we pass legislation that provides for Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs for convicted pedophiles, rapists and other criminal perverts - we tax prosthetics for wounded soldiers and for children as well. Then we claim it by some mysterious procedure which we are to dumb to understand, that by taxing those things, we are going to SAVE large amounts of money. What are they taking or smoking? If that pacemaker that normally cost $30,000 is taxed 10% and now costs $33,000 - tell me again how that is a SAVING!
We do not provide special programs for breast cancer treatment, nor for heart ailments, and not any of a long list of other ills - then we specifically include abortions for the killing of babies and - Then by some distorted mathematical methodology we claim that taxing the prosthetic appliances and equipment used to make life livable for not only our brave Military wounded, but even the smallest of children too. (the list goes on and on)Somehow this is saving money.
Senators making statements like - you know, it takes several years to get the laws in place to’control’ people.
Today in a call in radio show, one of my State Senators had the gall to use a quote as justification. “Our job is to steer the ship and yours is to row.” Of course the very next caller told him that WE steer the ship, and that his job is to do the rowing to get done what we want.
The congressman then tried Lincoln - ‘ The purpose of government is to do those things people can’t do’ as justification for health care legislation. He has no concept of the fact that what was meant was things like defend the Nation from foreign attack, building the Panama Canal, Interstate Highways, and the space programs. Those are the things that we need coordinated Government actions to accomplish - Not to be telling us how we HAVE to raise our crops, how much we must weigh, what we must eat, and definitely not what medical treatment my Doctor and I decide is in my best interest.
I eagerly undertook to stand in South Florida during the Cuban/Russian missile crisis facing their nuclear weapons... I did not feel the deep resentment nor helplessness that Barack Obama instills now.
So, I ask, is it just me or are others feeling similarly?
Digging Deeper Competition - A feast of urban agriculture projects!
Within San Francisco and many urban areas, the potential for using community gardens,
backyard gardens, vacant or under-utilized lots, parks, greenhouses, and rooftops
for food cultivation is significant. Urban agriculture is known to encourage community
wide benefits in urban neighborhoods as well as wellness and business opportunities
on an individual scale.
The urban farming explosion
“I’m a farmer first,” he tells his weekend class of 80 people who are crammed into
one of his 14 greenhouses in a working class neighbourhood of Milwaukee. They’re
paying $150 a day for a weekend course at the at the epicentre of the North American
urban agriculture explosion. Biceps the size of tree trunks hanging out of his cut-off
hoody, he strokes and pokes the moist black soil swarming with red wriggler worms
as he repeats his lessons.
Allotment garden concept is being modernized in Finland
A new allotment garden area to be built in the city of Lieksa, Eastern Finland,
promotes building with wood. The cabins will be designed for year-round use.
“We want to update the idea of allotment gardens for the 2000’s. Originally, allotment
gardens were created to enable poor people to grow fresh vegetables, but that’s
not what people need or want from them nowadays,” explains Mr. Markku Karjalainen,
architect and docent at the University of Oulu.
Finnish gardeners cull rabbits in capital city
Helsinki’s rabbit wild situation has reached the point where the little furry creatures
are now being hunted by any means necessary, especially in residential districts
with gardens to protect.
According to head gardener Marko Pesu of the University of Helsinki’s botanical
gardens, also in the city’s allotment gardens some rather dubious rabbit-elimination
methods have been introduced.

Freeper who knows what evil? in post #51 linked to a site that has the following videos on how to start vegetables/plants from seed. I found them to be very informative and I thought I would just post the links to the videos. If you are starting from seed these are good instructions. Most of this has been covered in discussions on this thread before but watching the videos makes things a lot clearer.

LOL, Then they were called ‘C Rations’ (up until about the mid to late 60’s) - Canned, except for the chocolate, cigarettes & misc. stuff... (That is why we really really needed that P-38 can opener...)
They must have been from WWII.
We did discover that they had several advantages - like once after eating them for two weeks straight, the mess tent got set up on a place that got to be known as Gnat Hill... Cooks did a great job of making us a nice meal, but the gnats swarmed to it - opened the C Rations and the gnats hovered about 3 feet away from them - so rather than eating gnats, we left the fresh food and ate more C Rations. (We survived too... LOL)
Nothing like them in the winter when you weren’t where you could heat them - nice globs of congealed grease that coat your teeth for the whole day... We soon learned to heat them by punching a couple of holes in the top and putting them between the intake and exhaust manifolds of trucks, generators, etc.
