Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

The Frugal Roundup

How to Brew Your Own Beer and Maybe Save Some Money. A fantastic introduction to home brewing, something I’ve never done myself, but always been interested in trying. (@Generation X Finance)

Contentment: A Great Financial Principle. If I had to name one required emotion for living a frugal lifestyle it would be contentment. Once you are content with your belongings and your lot in life you can ignore forces attempting to separate you from your money. (@Personal Finance by the Book)

Use Energy Star Appliances to Save On Utility Costs. I enjoyed this post because it included actual numbers, and actual total savings, from someone who upgraded to new, energy star appliances. (@The Digerati Life)

Over-Saving for Retirement? Is it possible to “over-save” for retirement? Yes, I think so. At some point I like the idea of putting some money aside in taxable investments outside of retirement funds, to be accessed prior to traditional retirement age. (@The Simple Dollar)

40 Things to Teach My Kids Before They Leave Home. A great list of both practical and philosophical lessons to teach your kids before they reach the age where they know everything. I think that now happens around 13 years-old. (@My Supercharged Life)

Index Fund Investing Overview. If you are looking for a place to invest with high diversification and relatively low fees (for broader index funds with low turnover), index funds are a great place to start. (@Money Smart Life)

5 Reasons To Line Dry Your Laundry. My wife and I may soon be installing a clothesline in our backyard. In many neighborhoods they are frowned upon - one of the reasons I don’t like living in a neighborhood. I digress. One of our neighbors recently put up a clothesline, and we might just follow his lead. (@Simple Mom)

Oral Bisphosphonates: Ongoing Safety Review of Atypical Subtrochanteric Femur Fractures

Audience: Orthopedic healthcare professionals, patients

FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that at this point, the data that FDA has reviewed have not shown a clear connection between bisphosphonate use and a risk of atypical subtrochanteric femur fractures. FDA is working with outside experts, including members of the recently convened American Society of Bone and Mineral Research Subtrochanteric Femoral Fracture Task Force, to gather more information and evaluate the issue further.

FDA recommends that healthcare professionals follow the recommendations in the drug label when prescribing oral bisphosphonates.

Patients should continue taking oral bisphosphonates unless told by their healthcare professional to stop. Patients should talk to their healthcare professional if they develop new hip or thigh pain or have any concerns with their medications.

Stephen Colbert mocks crisis garden advertisement

Said Colbert: “Glenn’s advertisers know nothing moves product like the hot stink
of fear.” Case in point: a commercial for a product called Survival Seed Bank,
in which the spokesman claims nonhybrid seeds will be more valuable that silver
and gold, and thus save you from the impending economic meltdown.

Design Project - Charlotte, NC Urban Farm

Today we’re designing an urban farm. This one will become real if we can get the
funding necessary to start the program. The specific location of the farm will
have to remain a secret for now but it’s in Charlotte, NC near uptown. Todd Serdula
did most of the excellent graphic work on this proposal.

Wall Street Journal talks to urban farmers

A Cabbage Patch for City Hall. Last year, Baltimore City Hall replaced its traditional
flower gardens with vegetable beds to help serve a local soup kitchen. But not all
went as planned. Anne Marie Chaker reports on lessons learned and plans for this
year’s crop.

Small City Plots Foster a Sense of Agricultural Revival, but Fail to Make Up for
the Steady Loss of Farmland in the San Francisco Bay Region

Pocket-size farms have sprung up in cities around the Bay Area in recent years,
part of a movement to bring consumers closer to the sources of food they buy.

But even as these small farms show up in urban neighborhoods, bringing with them
a sense of a local agricultural revival, the continuing decline in the availability
of farmland in the Bay Area’s traditional growing areas threatens to leave consumers
further away than ever from where their food is cultivated.

Animals in the City - Raising sheep in the suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon

Animal husbandry remains the livelihoods of many communities, even in urban areas.

This documentary film is a live witness of Arab Khaldeh families raising sheep in
the suburbs of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, an integration of rural communities
in urban areas.

Roberta’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn has a rooftop greenhouse

Once inside the unassuming entrance of Roberta’s, if you can cast your gaze past
the wood fired stove and pizza gurus, let your olfactory senses take in something
beyond the sweet aroma of ricotta pancakes sopping up maple syrup, and put down
your mason jar of local beer, you will see, hear and experience the backyard urban
oasis - a farming oasis that is. But don’t look out, look up. There is where you
will find the first of the rooftop greenhouses.

The article I read, OR ELSE perhaps a comment made about the article, mentioned that a similar thing would occur if there was a recall of MSG products, as there simply are many thousands of products containing MSG, just like the TVP.<<<

I am sure that is true.

Your search above is very informative ....

One link says they knew and kept shipping out the products.

I am sure they ruined several of the smaller companies and they were the first companies in the recalls, still they also got some of the larger companies too.

If they shipped deliberately, then in my books, that is an act of terrorism.

With no one sick, then FDA can still use this to close down small companies, maybe they did not donate to the right party.

It appears that Las vegas shipped it out of country, so the FDA had to make a production out of it, would be my guess.

I was going to ask if you’d seen TT at all, afraid to hear the answer. Wheewww, am I happy to hear she is alive and well and still coming around :)<<<

She lives under the mobile, they have had a den under there for 30 years, I expect the mobile will fall in the hole one of the days.

TT is still first when I fill their feed dish and so beautiful.

Purr Baby also got darker, so her oranges show up both are striking and would be hard to tell apart.

How is your baby doing?

Plavix (clopidogrel): Reduced effectiveness in patients who are poor metabolizers of the drug

Audience: Cardiology healthcare professionals, patients

FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that a Boxed Warning has been added to the prescribing information for Plavix, an anti-blood clotting medication. The Boxed Warning in the drug label will include information to:

* Warn about reduced effectiveness in patients who are poor metabolizers of Plavix. Poor metabolizers do not effectively convert Plavix to its active form in the body.
* Inform healthcare professionals that tests are available to identify genetic differences in CYP2C19 function.
* Advise healthcare professionals to consider use of other anti-platelet medications or alternative dosing strategies for Plavix in patients identified as poor metabolizers.

Plavix is given to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, stroke, and cardiovascular death in patients with cardiovascular disease. Plavix works by decreasing the activity of blood cells called platelets, making platelets less likely to form blood clots. A data summary and additional information for healthcare professionals and patients are provided in the linked Drug Safety Communication.

Ensuring Japan’s food security through free trade not tariffs
March 10th, 2010

Guest Author: Kazuhito Yamashita, RIETI

Japanese agriculture is in a free-falling decline. In the years between 1960 and 2005, the share of agricultural output in GDP dropped from 9 per cent to 1 per cent, the food self-sufficiency ratio from 79 per cent to 41 per cent, and agricultural land, indispensable for food security, from 6.09 million hectares to 4.63 million hectares.

continues.
