Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

The Frugal Roundup

Contentment: A Great Financial Principle. If I had to name one required emotion for living a frugal lifestyle it would be contentment. Once you are content with your belongings and your lot in life you can ignore forces attempting to separate you from your money. (@Personal Finance by the Book)

Use Energy Star Appliances to Save On Utility Costs. I enjoyed this post because it included actual numbers, and actual total savings, from someone who upgraded to new, energy star appliances. (@The Digerati Life)

Over-Saving for Retirement? Is it possible to “over-save” for retirement? Yes, I think so. At some point I like the idea of putting some money aside in taxable investments outside of retirement funds, to be accessed prior to traditional retirement age. (@The Simple Dollar)

40 Things to Teach My Kids Before They Leave Home. A great list of both practical and philosophical lessons to teach your kids before they reach the age where they know everything. I think that now happens around 13 years-old. (@My Supercharged Life)

Index Fund Investing Overview. If you are looking for a place to invest with high diversification and relatively low fees (for broader index funds with low turnover), index funds are a great place to start. (@Money Smart Life)

5 Reasons To Line Dry Your Laundry. My wife and I may soon be installing a clothesline in our backyard. In many neighborhoods they are frowned upon - one of the reasons I don’t like living in a neighborhood. I digress. One of our neighbors recently put up a clothesline, and we might just follow his lead. (@Simple Mom)

Audience: Neurological healthcare professionals, patients

FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that the risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) increases with the number of Tysabri infusions received. This new safety information, based on reports of 31 confirmed cases of PML received by the FDA as of January 21, 2010, will now be included in the Tysabri drug label and patient Medication Guide. Information about the occurrence of Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS) in patients who have developed PML and subsequently discontinued Tysabri has also been added to the drug label. IRIS is a rare condition characterized by a severe inflammatory response that can occur during or following immune system recovery, causing an unexpected decline in a patient’s condition after return of immune function.

Based on the available information, FDA believes that the clinical benefits of Tysabri continue to outweigh the potential risks. Revisions to the drug label and patient Medication Guide, with the continued use of the TOUCH Prescribing Program, are intended to maximize the safe use of Tysabri and the identification of new PML cases.

Interesting reading on that Yellowstone thread.<<<

I have always found geology study interesting, goes with rock and gold hunting.

Then after years of study, I discovered that they do not know for sure, what they teach and are teaching opinions.

It is the same for archeology and I am sure other studies.

Now I will not live to find out if they will ever know the truths about all the mysteries we have in our world.

I would imagine that folks who live there, do not get too worried about them erupting, or those that do, would move on....

More fun to stay and see what happens there.

I never got to Yellowstone, did see Mt Rushmore, and if you go there, stick around for the evening, when the faces have lights shining on them, that was impressive.

Maybe they don’t light them now, LOL, it was in 1955 that I was there.

Back then I was dumb enough to get out of the car and take pictures of the herd of buffalo, coming right at me...and the sign that said to not get in the way of buffalo that are coming at you.

Seems they just keep moving, and do not stop for mere people.

So much that I did not get to see, LOL, but I have seen much in the west, that few others have.

My idea of a good vacation, go to the desert, pick a road in the mining area and go to the end of it, stopping at all mines and rock formations and no people around.

We found a valley that had the mines, old indian campgrounds, wildlife and jewelry grade rocks, spent many weekends in there and few others even knew it existed for the freeways had cut off the roads into it and one had to enter via a wash that ran under the freeway.

It had been mined/prospected around 1900-1940 and is in the Arizona mining books for that era.

You will see holes in the sides of hills, like pockmarks, they once contained high grade gold ore, it was hauled out on burros, so says the mining book from the State of Arizona.

LOL, we never did find one that they missed.

>>>The power of food: House quietly passes HR 2749, Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009<<<

Very sadly, we are rushing headlong into oblivion...

He who controls the food, controls everything!

The following post in response to a pro-HR2749 article pretty well sums it up.....

“Sadly, the Make Our Food Safe coalition is using the pain and suffering of victims and their families and the funding of the multi-billion dollar Pew Charitable Trusts to press for passage of a bill that will NOT do what they represent that it will. Furthermore, they have not only misrepresented the present situation and the legislation, they have dissembled.

And, you, Mr. Flynn, I challenge to do more than this parroting of the 1-14-10 press release that MOFS made via the subsidiary of one of the top 10 lobbying firms in Washington. Show us exactly how S 510 or HR 2749 would have made a difference in the outbreak due to the Peanut Corporation of America.

Instead, both bills will restrict the availability of the healthiest food in America—food grown, processed and distributed locally for local people. The proposed legislation will also force most of the young people in my area (western NC) to give up their new careers of farming because they won’t be able to make a living working within its inappropriate constraints.

And those of us, like me, who have committed years of our lives and much of our wealth to revive local, healthy food for local people while not making the minimum wage will probably have most everything we’ve worked for destroyed by legislation that will advance the industrial agriculture which is creating the problems.

For the rest of the story of this legislation, please write me at healthyfoodcoalition@gmail.com.”

I keep posting how the gov is pushing for homegrown/local food in abandoned lots and rooftops and they are at the same time writing laws to make it illegal to do what they say we should do.

Something is very wrong, and in the end we are in trouble and not allowed to have the best of foods.

LOL, what else can one expect, when they pass off someone else’s plants in the White House gardens.

Well, my plan is to grow it myself and dare them to try and take it! Backed up by Mr. Colt, Mr. Winchester and Msrs. Smith and Wesson. Now I grant you, I will give it in a minute to family and close friends in need, but they need to learn one lesson - I am like a chain - I can be led to do something, but you’ll have one hell of a time trying to push me to do it. Since we don’t have any real honest-to-goodness leaders to do the leading, they shall have the daunting task of pushing this reluctant chain that takes every opportunity to go my own way!

Well, looks like we may really get dumped on with the snow...
Weathermen are calling for the band that includes me to need to be prepared for 20-30”. Forecasters are calling this Snowmageddon - Gov. has declared state of emergency, all cars are ordered off the roads except emergency vehicles starting 10 pm tonight (just about 18 minutes). National Guard was activated - Son-in-law (Emergency Command operations Sgt. in the National Guard - his full time job)reported in this morning with bags packed for at least 4 days at their Emergency Command Center where he works. His latest report is that phase I is fully in force and they have phase II well underway. Tonight they are moving men and equipment out to stand by at local fire/ambulance/emt stations to blaze trails for emergency equipment and assist in rescues.

For the first time, I hooked up my equipment for heaters/lights. I have a battery with a charger to keep the battery charged while we have current, and I have an inverter that converts the 12V battery to 115V 60 cycle to run things. The inverter is rated at 1,500 watts and the stove is drawing only 117 watts... Even allowing liberally for loss during the conversions, it should power the pellet stove heater for at least 2 days before needing a recharge. If the power is still off, I can put the inverter on the car and jumper cables to the battery for the half hour it would take to charge up the battery. So, with two cars full of gas and several extra cans of gas on hand, I could go 3-4 weeks without power and never have to fire up my big generator. Love it when a project comes together! Sure lots quieter with the inverter and the gas usage is really low. Besides, a car running for half an hour every couple of days won’t draw near as much attention as a loud generator running all day.

Plus, for lights, I won’t even have to run them on the inverter, I have 6 solar yard lights that will go outside during the day to charge, and in the house at night for light. These are really nice since they are bright and have an on/off switch to conserve energy.

Have enough laid by to run a bakery/soup kitchen for the neighborhood for a couple of months at least.

Fun will come Sunday morning early when I have to get wife to the hospital to work... If we make it, she will probably be there for several days - they have taken over the whole physical therapy section and filled it with cots for employees.

Only satisfaction may be seeing all the hot-air politicians being stuck in DC and get a full dose of how wonderfully their big Gov’t. programs work with 30” of snow. HeHe...

Has anyone ever posted a way to make lipstick from the leftover bits left in the bottom of the tube? I seem to remember (from the distant past), that you could melt down these bits and repackage it, having new lipstick-—usually creating a brand new color. If anyone has any input on this, I would appreciate it.

Urban Orchard - Prizing winning concept for the Growing Up design competition 2009

A cities gardens can be more than a decorated landscape.

Like the built environment,
green spaces can work with us to make an integrated urban environment rather than
isolated pockets of manicured greenery.

We propose a garden that contributes a SOCIAL space, creates a low impact and sustainable

Cuba plans city farms to ease economy woes

Cuba has launched an ambitious project to ring urban areas with thousands of small
farms in a bid to reverse the country’s agricultural decline and ease its chronic
economic woes.

The five-year plan calls for growing fruits and vegetables and raising livestock
in four mile-wide rings around 150 of Cuba’s cities and towns, with the exception
of the capital Havana.

Urban Roots - documentary about Detroit’s urban agricultural movement

URBAN ROOTS, directed by Detroit-native Mark McInnis is a documentary that tells
the powerful story of a small group of unique individuals involved in Detroit’s
urban agricultural movement.

But now, against all odds in the empty lots, in the old factory yards, and in-between
the sad, sagging blocks of company housing, seeds of change are taking root. A small
group of dedicated citizens, allied with environmental and academic groups, have
started an urban environmental movement with the potential to transform not just
a city after its collapse, but also a country after the end of its industrial age.

Urban farmers are challenging city halls to rewrite ordinances

LOS ANGELES - Tara Kolla fancied herself a green thumb-turned-green businesswoman
when she planted an organic flower plot in her yard and sold poppies, sweet peas
and zinnias at the local farmers market. For her neighbors, it was an eyesore.

Where Kolla saw her efforts as creating a lush sanctuary, her neighbors witnessed
dusty pots, steaming compost, flies and a funky aroma on their tiny cul-de-sac in
Los Angeles. They complained to zoning officials - and prevailed.

Yes, I too remember about scraping it out and ?

If one wanted, why not make a chapstick type and use it for coloring, a little beeswax and a good oil, should make a good lip gloss.

Let me see if I can find a list of links that I saw a couple days ago, from my ‘wanta be a soapmaker ‘ days for it would have the info on it, it had wonderful links listed, a step back in time.

Actually, I never liked vaseline; it coats your lips rather than allowing your lips to absorb in the moisture. That’s why after you use commercial lip balms, you have to apply more later.

Honey locks in moisture—add a bit of your favorite essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree oil (good for healing cold sores) until you find something you like.

i know this is an old old old thread. however i think a bit of honey, something like a drop of essential oil, and a pinch of geletin. you heat up the honey so it is hot, not burning, but hot enough that it moves like water. then add the geletin, stir until disolved, if it cools too much before the geletin is disolved then reheat. after that is done mix in your essential oil. put into the fridge to help the geletin soilidify, then voila, a lipbalm that is good for you.

This recipe here is the one I use everytime its like the same one’s in stores.... I even make this one for friends at christmas time.

1 teaspoon coconut oil(the cream)
1 teaspoon almond oil
1/2 grated beeswax

mix all 3 together and melt ingredients for 1 to 2 min in microwave and stir... watch closely when in microwave cause it starts to pop in mirowave.

Then after its out mix them you can add color to it food coloring is fine it works, and then id add a few drops of scent maybe vanilla, or watermelon something that would be good for your lips not floral scents that would be more for a perfume.

After you do that make sure you have a lip gloss jar 1 or 2 and pour it in bottle give about 5 to 10 min to start harden a good trick is to put it in refrigerator to let it harden quickly then you have your lip gloss.
hope this helps!

It’s been a LONG time since I have visited this site so please excuse me while I play catch-up on some seriously older posts, LOL. Firstly, never use petrolium jelly. It’s a by product of fuel (gasoline) making and is known to cause cancer. Any recipe you find that call for it-try this instead. It’s UNpetrolium jelly
1 ounce beeswax
1/2 cup grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil
place in microwave safe dish & heat until completely melted. It won’t take long so watch it carefully!
You can use it as is or add a little flavor to it. I prefer to add 6-8 drops of cinnamon leaf oil for lip plumping (per little plastic pot I put it in). You can add more cinnamon leaf oil just becareful cuz it can burn

Here’s a few good recipes of my own to get ya started:

Almond Honey Lip Balm (Makes alot!)

8 ounces Sweet Almond Oil
1.2-2.5 ounces of beeswax ( the more you add the harder the product)
1 TBS Honey
Carefully melt & blend all ingredients, pour into pots & let cool. TIP: place caps on pots but do NOT screw on! This helps reduce moisture, keep contaminates out and lets it cool. Since this is such a big recipe I use this one for gift giving.

Cocoa Mint Lip Balm

.25 ounces beeswax
.33 ounces Shea Butter
.33 ounces Cocoa Butter (unrefined-you want that chocolate scent!)
.40 ounces Sweet Almond oil
10 drops Peppermint EO (essential oil)
Melt and blend everything then add the EO right before pouring into pots
Moisturizing Lip Gloss
2 TBS UNpetroleum jelly ( I added the recipe elsewhere)
1Tsp Honey
Flavoring to suit your tastes
You can even add micro-glitter so long as it’s made for bath/body products!

Your Flavor Lip Gloss
(have fun with this one!
Unpetroleum Jelly
Kool Aid (sugared powder or Lik-m-aid candy powder!) Add to suit your tastes!

Pour 1/4 cup almond oil into the measuring cup.
Place measuring cup in the saucepan of warm water and heat gently.
Slowly add 1/4 ounce of beeswax to the warm oil, and wait for the wax to completely melt. (Make sure you keep enough water in the saucepan as the wax melts! Add more water if needed.)
Using an old metal spoon, mix the now liquid wax and oil potion together.
Flavor the balm by adding five drops of flavor oil and stir to blend.
Remove measuring cup with mixture from heat and set aside.
Now test the consistency and strength of your lip balm!
Pull your spoon out of the blended mixture, allowing a small puddle of balm to remain in spoon.
Carefully place spoon in refrigerator to cool.
When cool, gently run your finger over the hardened balm mixture.
If the Balm is too hard (waxy), add more oil to your mixture.
If it is too soft, add more wax.
Do this until you’ve reached the desired consistency.
A few more drops of flavor oil can be added at this time if desired.
Place measuring cup in the saucepan with water and back onto the stove to re-warm and melt any ingredients you may have added.
When all ingredients are thoroughly melted and mixed together, have an adult spoon balm into small jars.
Set aside to cool.

How to Make Your Own Scented Rocks
Place rocks in a bowl or dish to scent a room. A nice alternative to potpourri!

* 1/2 cup plain flour
* 1/2 cup salt
* 1/4 teaspoon essential oil (your favorite scent)
* 2/3 cups boiling water
* Food coloring, if desired

1. In bowl, mix dry ingredients well.
2. Add essential oil, and boiling water to dry ingredients. (Scent will be strong, but will fade slightly when dry.)
3. For colored stones, blend in food coloring, one drop at a time until desired shade is reached.
4. Blend ingredients, and form balls into different shape and sizes to look like stones.
5. Allow stones to dry.
